Everything okay?”

I wanted to say yes.

That was always my first answer.

Even when something was wrong.

Especially when something was wrong.

But I looked down at the pages spread across my table.

“No,” I said. “I need you to help me with something.”

She didn't interrupt.

That was one of the reasons I trusted her.

Eleanor had known me long enough to understand that I wouldn't call before breakfast unless I had a reason.

I told her I needed her to watch from her kitchen window.

And I needed her phone camera ready.

Just for about an hour.

There was a small pause.

Then she gave a short, almost satisfied laugh.

“It's about time you asked me for help.”

Before I could explain any more, she ended the call.

I looked at the phone.

Then I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because Eleanor was still Eleanor.

Forty years of knowing each other had not changed that.

She had never needed a long explanation before deciding whether she would stand beside me.

I had not asked her to confront anyone.

I hadn't asked her to come into my house and argue with Mark.

I wanted someone nearby who knew what was happening.

Someone who could observe without being drawn into Alicia's version of events.

Eleanor could do that.

I knew she could.

I looked at the kitchen clock.

There was still time.

I needed to make another call.

This one required more thought.

Raymond had always been careful about important documents.

He had kept records from the day we bought the house.

He saved letters from the bank.

Insurance papers.

Receipts for major work.

Anything he believed might matter later.

Sometimes I complained that he kept too much.

He would smile and put the papers back where they belonged.

But there was one person he trusted whenever something important needed checking.

A man downtown who had helped him with paperwork for years.

He knew the history of our house.

He knew what belonged to us.

And he knew Raymond had settled the mortgage long before my husband died.

I found his number and called.

When he answered, I introduced myself.

Then I explained what had happened.

I told him about Alicia's accidental call.

About the folder.

About Silver Meadows.

About Bruce and the estimated price.

I told him I had no intention of signing anything until I understood exactly what was being asked of me.

He listened.

He didn't rush me.

He didn't treat my age as a reason to doubt my account.

When I finished, he asked a few questions about the house records.

I answered as carefully as I could.

Then I asked whether he could come over with the documents that mattered.

He agreed.

Without hesitation.

I thanked him.

After ending the call, I sat down again.

Two calls.

That was all.

No police.

No threats.

No dramatic accusations.

I had heard Mark and Alicia discuss a plan, not watched them commit a crime.

I wasn't going to pretend otherwise.

But I didn't need a crime to exist before I could say no.

I was allowed to refuse.

That thought seems obvious now.

At the time, it felt almost new.

For years, I had worked hard not to disappoint my son.

When he needed something, I tried to provide it.

When he had trouble, I listened.

When he was busy, I told him I understood.

When Alicia made suggestions about how I should do things, I often followed them simply because arguing seemed unnecessary.

Little concessions.

One after another.

I had mistaken them for kindness.

Some were kindness.

Others were simply the habit of making myself easier for everybody else.

Looking back, that distinction embarrasses me.

Not because helping my family was wrong.

But because I had begun acting as though being a good mother meant never asking what something would cost me.

Forty thousand dollars.

I thought about that money again.

I didn't regret helping them buy a home.

I never wanted the twins to suffer because their parents and I disagreed.

But I did regret believing that gratitude was guaranteed simply because I had given something freely.

I had wanted Mark to have a secure place to raise his children.

Now he was helping plan a way to take mine.

The thought made me feel sick.

I pushed back my chair and stood.

There was work to do.

That sounds strange, considering what I had just heard.

Most people might have expected me to sit down and cry.

Perhaps I should have.

But I had visitors coming.

And I knew exactly how I wanted the room to look when they arrived.

I washed the cup I had used earlier.

Then I put away the dish towel.

I wiped the table.

I gathered the grocery pages and placed them somewhere safe.

I didn't tear them up.

I didn't leave them where Alicia might notice them the moment she walked inside.

They were my record of what I had heard.

I intended to keep them.

Then I opened the cupboard where I stored the good cups.

The ones I used when company came.

They had belonged to the life Raymond and I built together.

Not expensive.

Just familiar.

I set them out carefully.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then I stopped.

I looked at the empty place near the end of the table.

I took out a fourth.

That was for the person Mark and Alicia didn't know would be joining us.

The sight of four places made the morning feel different.

Until then, I had been alone with the secret.

Now I knew I wouldn't have to face them by myself.

I went to the counter and brought out the banana bread.

Alicia had complimented it for years.

Every time I served it, she told me how wonderful it smelled.

She always said she would have a slice later.

She rarely touched it.

I used to pretend not to notice.

Perhaps that sounds petty.

It was only bread.

But after hearing her speak about me in the car, I found myself remembering all those little performances.

The smile.

The compliment.

The plate she left untouched.

I had spent years receiving her politeness as affection.

Now I was wondering how often it had simply been useful.

I cut several slices anyway.

I arranged them on a plate.

I placed the plate in the middle of the table.

Then I adjusted the cups so everything looked welcoming.

I wanted the kitchen to seem exactly as it always had.

The same neat table.

The same old furniture.

The same woman who offered refreshments before asking what anybody wanted.

Nothing dramatic.

Nothing that would warn them I knew.

I walked into the living room.

Bruce had stood there twice.

I remembered where he had looked.

The ceiling.

The molding.

The walls.

At the time, I had been pleased that someone appreciated the work Raymond and I had done.

Now I stood in the same room and tried to see it through Bruce's eyes.

Not as a home.

As something to sell.

A price.

A commission.

I didn't know what conversations he had actually been part of.

Alicia had mentioned him, but I wasn't going to pretend I knew more than that.

Still, I understood why the visits troubled me now.

A man who sold houses had been looking at mine.

And my daughter-in-law had been discussing what it might bring.

I reached out and touched the edge of the mantel.

Raymond had fixed it years ago.

There was still a tiny uneven place underneath where the wood met the wall.

Nobody noticed it.

I did.

I knew where every small imperfection in that house was.

I knew which step creaked.

Which window needed a firmer push.

Which cupboard door would not close unless I lifted it slightly.

Those were not things a brochure or a sale estimate could measure.

They were the marks of living somewhere.

I wasn't ready to give them up.

And I certainly wasn't ready to have them taken from me.

I returned to the kitchen.

The clock kept moving.

I checked the table again.

I checked my phone.

I thought about Eleanor across the street.

She would have a clear view of the driveway from her kitchen.

I thought about the man coming from downtown with the records.

I thought about Mark and Alicia in their car.

Were they still practicing?

Were they discussing what to say?

Did they imagine I was drinking tea and waiting happily for a visit from my family?

That last thought made me uncomfortable.

Because it was exactly what I would have been doing if Alicia's phone had not called mine.

I would have opened the door.

I would have hugged them.

I would have poured tea.

And when they brought out the paperwork, I might have trusted them.

I might have believed Mark's sad face.

I might have listened to Alicia explain why a move would be good for me.

I might even have taken off my glasses when she suggested cleaning them.

I didn't want to believe that last possibility.

But I had heard what she said.

And I knew how easily I had accepted small instructions from her before.

The realization frightened me.

Not because I thought I was helpless.

Because I had made myself careless around people I loved.

I sat for a moment.

Then I stood again.

I couldn't stay still.

At 8:40, I heard a car outside.

I went to the window.

Mark and Alicia had arrived.

Their car turned into my driveway and stopped.

I stayed behind the curtain.

Alicia remained seated for a few moments.

She lowered the mirror and checked her appearance.

Then she touched up her lipstick.

The movement was so ordinary that it almost made me doubt everything.

Women checked their lipstick all the time.

There was nothing suspicious about that.

But I couldn't forget the voice I had heard earlier.

The impatience.

The certainty.

The confidence that I would sign whatever they brought.

I looked at Mark.

He remained in the passenger seat.

His face was serious.

He seemed to be preparing himself.

I watched him take a breath.

Then he arranged his expression into something heavy and sorrowful.

I knew that look.

I had seen it when he was younger and had to tell me something I wouldn't like.

I had always believed it meant he was struggling with guilt.

Now I knew he had been instructed to wear it.

That was the hardest part of watching him.

Not the papers.

Not the possibility of leaving my home.

The fact that I could recognize the expression and know it had been rehearsed.

They got out of the car.

Alicia adjusted her clothes.

Mark followed her toward the front door.

They looked like an ordinary married couple visiting an elderly relative.

Nothing about them suggested what I had heard that morning.

I stepped away from the window.

I smoothed the front of my blouse.

I glanced toward the table with its good cups and neatly arranged banana bread.

Four places.

Everything ready.

Then the doorbell rang.

For years, I had opened that door as soon as I knew Mark was on the other side.

That morning, I didn't.

I counted slowly to ten.

I wanted my breathing steady.

I wanted my hands calm.

I wanted to look at both of them without allowing the hurt to speak before I was ready.

When I reached ten, I turned the handle.

Mark stood beside Alicia.

His face was already full of practiced concern.

Alicia smiled.

“Morning, Mother D.”

I looked at my son.

Then at his wife.

I smiled back.

“Good morning. Come inside. I've made something for you.”

I moved aside and let them enter.

They had brought a plan for my future.

I had prepared a table where that plan would be discussed.

And this time, I would not let anyone decide for me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: My Son Sat Down at My Kitchen Table Wearing the Sad Face His Wife Had Told Him to Practice

Eleanor answered on the third ring. “Dorothy?
