2 – I Listened as My Son and His Wife Discussed a Place for Me to Live, Then I Heard What They Wanted From My House

At first, I thought the conversation might be about a medical appointment.

That would have been frightening enough.

But at least I could have understood why Mark and Alicia were discussing paperwork.

I was getting older.

I knew that.

There were mornings when my knees hurt before I reached the stairs.

Sometimes I forgot why I had entered a room.

Sometimes I needed to sit down after carrying laundry from the basement.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing I had hidden from anybody.

But my mind was still mine.

My decisions were still mine.

And I had never asked my son to find somewhere else for me to live.

Then Alicia mentioned the name.

Silver Meadows.

She said it as if Mark already knew exactly what she meant.

I had never been there.

I had heard of the place.

It was the sort of residential community whose brochures showed cheerful older people sitting in gardens.

Everything looked peaceful.

Everything looked easy.

I knew some people chose places like that because they wanted companionship or needed help.

There was nothing shameful about living in one.

That wasn't what frightened me.

What frightened me was hearing my family choose one without asking me.

Alicia began talking about her cousin.

Apparently, the cousin worked at Silver Meadows.

She believed that connection would make the arrangement less expensive.

She called it a family discount.

Then she laughed.

Mark laughed too.

I wrote the name carefully.

SILVER MEADOWS.

Underneath it, I wrote the word cousin.

Then discount.

I was still trying to work out what they expected me to sign.

Perhaps an application.

Perhaps something giving permission for a move.

I didn't know.

But I knew enough to understand that they intended to arrive at my house with papers already prepared.

My stomach began to tighten.

For a moment, Mark stopped answering.

I heard the engine.

The road noise.

A faint change in the radio.

Then he spoke.

“Don't you think we're moving too quickly?”

I closed my eyes.

There he was.

My son.

The boy who once cried when he accidentally broke one of my favorite cups.

The child who used to run toward me when he was frightened.

I could almost hear him asking a real question.

For a few seconds, I believed he might stop her.

I thought perhaps he had been pushed into something he didn't fully understand.

That thought helped me keep listening.

Then Alicia answered.

She sounded annoyed.

She reminded him that, according to her, they had already spent four years supporting the house.

She spoke as though they had earned the right to make decisions about it.

I frowned.

Supporting the house?

I knew every bill connected to my home.

I had paid them myself.

The taxes.

The insurance.

The electricity.

The occasional repairs.

Nobody else paid those expenses for me.

Nobody.

I reached for the notepad again.

FOUR YEARS.

I wrote the words in capital letters.

Four years was exactly how long Raymond had been gone.

The connection made something cold settle inside me.

Before that morning, I had thought of those four years as a period of grief and adjustment.

Apparently, Alicia had been keeping a different sort of count.

I looked toward the window above my sink.

Outside, the street looked the way it always did.

Eleanor's house stood across the way.

The pavement was dry.

The trees barely moved.

Everything was ordinary.

That made what I was hearing seem even stranger.

I had lived in that house for decades.

Raymond and I had built our life there.

We had spent weekends painting walls.

We had saved money for repairs.

We had argued over which room needed attention first.

I remembered the day the mortgage was finally paid.

1998\\.

Raymond had brought the last paperwork home as if it were something precious.

We had celebrated in the backyard.

The debt was finished.

The house was ours.

Completely.

I had never forgotten the feeling.

It meant that whatever happened, we had somewhere to stand.

I didn't understand why Alicia believed she and Mark had been paying for it.

Then I remembered the money.

Forty thousand dollars.

The amount came back to me so quickly that I nearly spoke aloud.

Four years earlier, Alicia had been expecting the twins.

They needed a larger, more stable place to live.

They were tired of renting.

Mark had sounded worried whenever we discussed the cost of buying a home.

Raymond was already gone by then.

I had money put aside.

I didn't need all of it.

At least, that's what I told myself.

So I gave them forty thousand dollars.

Not because they demanded it.

Not because they had promised something in return.

Because I wanted them to have a good start.

I wanted my grandchildren to grow up in a home where their parents didn't have to worry every month about whether they could afford to stay.

Mark had thanked me.

Alicia had hugged me.

I remembered how tightly she held me that day.

I also remembered feeling proud that I could still do something important for my family after losing Raymond.

It was a gift.

I had been clear about that.

I never sent them repayment reminders.

I never charged interest.

I never asked when I would see the money again.

I didn't even bring it up during arguments, because I didn't want it turned into a weapon.

And yet there I was, four years later, hearing Alicia speak as though my generosity had created a debt I owed them.

I pressed the pen harder against the page.

The tip left a small dent.

That bothered me more than it should have.

I liked keeping things neat.

Even when I was upset.

Especially then.

I glanced at the phone.

The call was still connected.

Mark was saying something quietly.

I couldn't make out every word.

I didn't guess at the missing parts.

I simply waited.

Then Alicia's voice grew clearer.

She began explaining what would happen after I had moved into Silver Meadows.

At first, I heard only fragments.

Once she's there.

Get it listed.

Bruce thinks.

I sat straighter.

Bruce.

I knew that name.

He was a friend of theirs who sold houses.

He had been inside my home twice.

Both visits had seemed casual.

The first time, Alicia brought him along and introduced him while I was making tea.

He had admired the living room.

He looked at the ceiling.

He asked about the molding.

I thought he was simply being friendly.

The second time, he spent more time looking around.

He asked questions about the property.

I answered some of them because I didn't think I had any reason to be careful.

Alicia had laughed when I noticed his interest.

She said he appreciated old houses.

That explanation had satisfied me.

I trusted her.

I trusted Mark.

And Bruce was their friend.

Now I heard Alicia mention him as part of a plan involving my house.

My fingers tightened around the pen.

She said Bruce believed the property could bring around one hundred and eighty thousand dollars.

One hundred and eighty thousand.

My home had become a number.

I wrote it down.

180,000.

Then I heard what she wanted to do with the money.

A trip to the lake.

A boat.

Other things they had apparently been discussing for some time.

I stared at the page.

They weren't planning to sell my house to pay for special care.

At least, that was not what Alicia was talking about.

They were planning what they could buy afterward.

I felt foolish for even needing to make the distinction.

Perhaps I had been lonely enough to accept almost anything that sounded like family concern.

But this wasn't concern.

It wasn't even a disagreement about how an older woman should live.

It was a plan to move me out of a house I owned, then use its value for themselves.

The amount of money made the plan clear.

The mention of the boat made it unbearable.

I put the pen down.

My hands needed a rest.

I had been holding it so tightly that my fingers ached.

On the table, my tea had developed a thin film across the surface.

I looked at it for a long time.

That was the cup I had made when I still believed the morning would be ordinary.

I could not remember taking even one sip after answering the phone.

Alicia was still talking.

Mark occasionally replied.

I listened to them discuss my property as if it were already available.

As if my consent were a small inconvenience.

As if my life could be packed away between breakfast and Christmas.

I thought of the mortgage documents Raymond had kept.

I thought of the forty thousand dollars.

I thought of Bruce standing beneath our living room ceiling.

Each memory had been harmless by itself.

Together, they looked different.

I reached for the notepad again.

This time, I wrote only one sentence.

THE HOUSE BELONGS TO ME.

I underlined it.

Then I waited to hear what else they had prepared.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Cruelest Thing I
