Is everything all right?”

Nobody answered.

I waited.

There was a faint rushing noise coming through the speaker, followed by the sound of a car indicator.

Then I heard music.

Not enough to recognize the song.

Just a radio playing somewhere in the background.

I brought the phone closer to my ear.

“Alicia?”

Still nothing.

Then her voice came through.

But she wasn't speaking to me.

“Mark, did you remember that paperwork?”

My hand stopped halfway toward my cup.

Mark.

My only son.

I heard him answer from somewhere nearby.

“Yes. It's behind us.”

Alicia asked about another item.

He told her he had put it in the glove compartment.

I didn't understand what they were discussing.

Not yet.

I thought perhaps they were going somewhere important.

Maybe a doctor's appointment.

Maybe something involving the twins.

I was about to speak again when Alicia laughed.

It wasn't a happy laugh.

It was the little impatient sound she made when she thought somebody else was being foolish.

“Stop worrying so much. Your mother won't give us trouble.”

I looked down at the phone.

Your mother.

Me.

I didn't move.

Mark said something I couldn't quite hear.

Alicia answered him immediately.

“She'll put her name wherever we tell her. She always does.”

There are sentences that take a moment to understand.

That one took several.

I had signed things for Mark before.

Ordinary things.

School paperwork when I helped with the grandchildren.

Medical forms when he needed assistance sorting through appointments.

Documents that had seemed harmless because they came from my family.

I had trusted them.

Perhaps too easily.

I had never thought that trust was something they discussed when I wasn't there.

Mark asked another question.

His voice sounded nervous.

“What happens if she wants to look through it?”

I heard Alicia sigh.

Then she suggested he find some excuse to take my glasses away while the papers were in front of me.

She even mentioned having them cleaned.

I stared at the pair of reading glasses resting beside the sugar bowl.

They were old.

Brown frames.

A little scratch on the right lens.

I wore them whenever I needed to read small print.

Alicia knew that.

She knew it because she had watched me search for them more than once.

And now she was treating that small weakness as something useful.

Something she could plan around.

My tea sat untouched.

The kitchen was quiet except for the refrigerator and the voices coming through my phone.

I should have interrupted.

I should have told them their call had reached me.

That would have been the normal thing to do.

Instead, I remained silent.

I couldn't explain why at the time.

Looking back, I think part of me already knew there was something worse coming.

My name is Dorothy.

I was seventy-three that morning.

For most of my life, I had been the kind of woman who believed family problems should be handled gently.

I didn't like arguments.

I didn't raise my voice unless there was a very good reason.

My husband, Raymond, used to tease me about it.

He said I could make somebody feel ashamed without saying a harsh word.

I don't know whether that was true.

But I do know I spent years keeping peace even when keeping peace cost me something.

Raymond had been dead for four years.

Some mornings, I still reached across the bed before remembering.

Some evenings, I still caught myself listening for his key in the front door.

I had grown used to the silence.

Or I told myself I had.

After he died, Mark became the person I most wanted to hear from.

He called every Sunday.

Usually at five in the afternoon.

Those calls rarely lasted more than eleven minutes.

I knew because I had developed the embarrassing habit of checking the duration afterward.

Eleven minutes.

Sometimes ten.

Once, thirteen.

I would spend most of the week thinking about what I might tell him.

Something about the garden.

A neighbor's new dog.

A small repair around the house.

Then, when he called, I would suddenly worry about taking too much of his time.

So I kept my stories short.

I asked about the twins.

I asked about Alicia.

I told him I was fine.

Always fine.

Even when the house felt too empty.

Even when Sunday had been the only day I heard another person's voice for more than a few minutes.

He was busy.

I understood that.

He had a wife and children and responsibilities.

I didn't expect his life to revolve around me.

I only expected him to remember that I was still part of it.

Alicia occasionally called too.

She had a special name for me.

Mother D.

The first time she used it, I thought it sounded affectionate.

Later, I noticed how she said it when she wanted something.

The sweetness always arrived a moment before the request.

I knew that much.

I simply chose not to think too hard about it.

Now her voice was filling my kitchen.

And she didn't know I could hear her.

I glanced at the clock.

7:19.

Four minutes had passed.

Four minutes were enough to make me understand that this wasn't an ordinary conversation.

I looked around the table.

My grocery notepad was beside the fruit bowl.

A yellow pad with a few items written on the top sheet.

Bread.

Milk.

Dish soap.

I picked it up.

Then I reached for my pen.

There was something Raymond used to tell me when we had important decisions to make.

He believed that words were too easy to forget when feelings became involved.

He always wanted dates, names and details written down before we acted.

I used to find that habit unnecessary.

That morning, I was grateful for it.

I wrote the time at the top.

7:15.

Then Alicia's name.

Then Mark's.

My hand trembled slightly.

I held the paper against the table and began recording the things I could remember.

The folder.

The brochure.

The signatures.

My glasses.

I tried to capture their words without changing them.

I didn't want anger filling in anything I hadn't actually heard.

That mattered to me.

It still does.

They had no idea I was listening.

They had no idea the woman they were discussing was sitting in her own kitchen with a pen in her hand.

And I was beginning to understand something I had refused to see for years.

My son and his wife weren't asking whether I wanted to make a change.

They were deciding how to make sure I couldn't stop them.

I looked toward Raymond's empty chair.

For one foolish second, I wanted him to come into the room.

I wanted him to tell me I had misunderstood.

But the chair stayed empty.

And Alicia kept talking.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: I
