She looked through the glass panel beside the front door and saw Claire standing on the step, holding a paper bag in one hand and a folded umbrella in the other.

For an instant, Eleanor felt the old rush of hope. Perhaps her daughter had reconsidered the message. Perhaps she had come to talk without Mark beside her, to explain the pressure she had been under, or simply to sit at the kitchen table as they used to do.

Eleanor opened the door.

“Hello, Mum,” Claire said.

“Hello, sweetheart.”

Claire looked tired. Her hair was pulled into a loose knot, and the collar of her coat was turned up against the wind. She held out the bag.

“I brought those pastries you like from the bakery near our house.”

Eleanor accepted it and stepped aside. Claire entered slowly, looking around the hallway as though she expected to find something different from the last time she had visited.

“Would you like tea?” Eleanor asked.

“Yes, please.”

They went into the kitchen. Eleanor filled the kettle while Claire sat at the table and took off her coat. The silence between them was uncomfortable, but not yet hostile. For a few minutes, they spoke about ordinary things: a road closure near Claire’s office, a leaking tap in her bathroom, and the unusually cold weather.

Then Claire folded her hands on the table.

“I've been thinking about what happened,” she said.

Eleanor turned from the counter. “So have I.”

“I shouldn't have sent that message. I was upset, and everything got out of hand.”

The apology was small, but Eleanor accepted it without demanding more. She sat opposite her daughter and waited.

Claire explained that Mark had been frustrated by the financial discussions. He believed Eleanor was making the process more complicated than necessary, and Claire had allowed his frustration to become her own. She said she had been worried about her mother's future and had thought that giving Mark more responsibility would make things easier.

“Did you understand what the power of attorney would allow him to do?” Eleanor asked.

Claire looked down at her hands.

“Not all of it.”

“Did you read the document?”

“Mark explained it to me.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“I know.”

For the first time that morning, Claire seemed genuinely uncomfortable rather than defensive. Eleanor wanted to believe the conversation might lead somewhere honest, but she reminded herself not to rush toward forgiveness merely because she had missed her daughter.

“I'm glad you've come,” Eleanor said. “I don't want us to be estranged. But I need to be able to make decisions about my money without feeling that I'll lose you if I disagree.”

Claire's eyes filled briefly, though she blinked the tears away.

“I never wanted you to feel that.”

“Then we need to be careful about how we speak to each other.”

Claire nodded. She reached for her cup, then put it down without drinking.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Did Dad leave any documents about the old property development?”

The question changed the atmosphere in the room.

Eleanor did not move. She had expected Claire to ask whether the dispute had been resolved, or whether the records explained why Peter had kept certain things private. Instead, Claire had gone directly to the documents.

“Why do you want to know?”

“Because Mark is worried you might find something misleading and think the family has been hiding money from you.”

“Which documents does he believe are misleading?”

Claire hesitated.

“I don't know exactly. He said Dad kept old paperwork and sometimes misunderstood what it meant.”

“Did Mark tell you that before or after I went to the storage unit?”

“Before.”

Eleanor held her daughter's gaze.

“Then he knew there were records worth looking for.”

“Not necessarily. He knew Dad had been involved in the development.”

“Did he know about the storage unit?”

Claire shook her head, but the movement was uncertain.

“I'm not sure.”

Eleanor took a breath. She had promised herself she would not accuse Claire of dishonesty without reason, but neither would she ignore what was in front of her.

“Claire, I need you to understand something. I found two versions of the agreement. The figures are different, and your father kept correspondence asking for an explanation. I don't know yet why they differ. That's why I'm asking a solicitor to review them.”

Claire's face lost color.

“Two versions?”

“Yes.”

“What did they say?”

Eleanor considered telling her more, then decided against it. She did not want to turn the kitchen into an interrogation room, and she had no way of knowing what Claire might repeat to Mark before the documents were examined.

“I'll discuss the findings when I understand them properly,” she said.

Claire pushed her cup away.

“Mark said you might say something like that.”

“Why?”

“He thinks you're becoming suspicious of everyone.”

Eleanor looked at her daughter for a long moment.

“Do you think I'm becoming suspicious, or do you think I'm asking questions you don't want to answer?”

Claire stood abruptly and walked to the window. Outside, a delivery van had stopped across the street, and a man was carrying parcels into the house opposite. Claire watched him for several seconds before speaking.

“I don't know what to believe anymore.”

It was the first honest thing she had said that morning.

Eleanor joined her at the window but left a little space between them.

“Then don't decide today,” she said. “You can love Mark and still ask him questions. You can love me and still disagree with me. Neither should require you to ignore facts.”

Claire turned toward her mother. Her eyes were wet now.

“You make it sound so simple.”

“It isn't simple. But it is necessary.”

They returned to the table. Claire apologized again for the message, and Eleanor told her she did not need to repeat the apology if she was willing to change what happened next. They agreed to keep communication open, though neither made promises about how quickly their relationship could recover.

Then Claire asked whether she could see the letter Peter had left.

Eleanor declined.

“Not yet. Martin needs to examine it, and I need to understand what it means before I share it.”

Claire nodded, but disappointment crossed her face.

“I understand.”

Eleanor wanted to believe her. Still, when Claire left twenty minutes later, she took the paper bag of pastries with her, explaining that Mark was waiting in the car and had forgotten to eat breakfast.

Eleanor watched through the window as her daughter climbed into the passenger seat. Mark was behind the wheel. He looked toward the house, and for a moment their eyes met through the glass.

He did not wave.

The car pulled away.

Eleanor stood at the window until it disappeared around the corner. She then gathered the cups and washed them, working slowly as she considered the visit.

Claire had apologized, but she had also asked about the documents before asking what her father had written or whether her mother was coping. The two things did not cancel each other out. They simply meant Eleanor needed to be patient without abandoning caution.

At Martin’s office, she handed over the diary and explained Claire’s visit. Martin listened, then examined the handwritten entry about the amendment.

He compared it with the two agreements and the correspondence from the intermediary company. The dates were consistent with Peter's account, but the evidence was incomplete.

“This gives us a reason to ask the administrator for the authorization record,” he said. “If there was a signed amendment, there should be a copy somewhere. If there wasn't, we need to understand why the revised figures were used.”

He also suggested that David provide a written account of what he remembered signing. A statement made while events were fresh would be more useful than relying on recollections gathered years later.

Eleanor agreed to contact him.

Before she left, Martin told her that his assistant had found an additional reference in the archive index. The intermediary company had transferred some records to an accounting firm after its dissolution. The firm had agreed to search its retained files, although it could not promise that the complete transaction packet still existed.

“Could this take months?” Eleanor asked.

“It could. But we have a clearer path than we had yesterday.”

That afternoon, David agreed to meet Eleanor and Martin at the solicitor's office. He arrived carrying a folder of his own, which contained old correspondence and a few bank statements from the development period.

He confirmed that he had never knowingly approved the revised payment schedule. He remembered signing the original agreement, but the final amendment had been presented to him as an administrative copy of terms already settled.

“Did you read it?” Martin asked.

“I read the pages they put in front of me. I didn't see this version.”

“Who presented it?”

“Richard Vale's office. I was told the remaining paperwork would follow.”

David looked ashamed as he spoke. He admitted that he had been overwhelmed by the financial pressure and had trusted Richard to manage the legal details. He had wanted to avoid further losses, and that desire had made him careless.

Martin asked whether David could identify the signatures on the revised agreement. David examined the page and said that the signature attributed to him looked similar to his own, but he could not confirm that he had signed that particular version.

He was not willing to accuse anyone of forging his name without a proper examination.

Eleanor respected that. She had no desire to replace one unproven accusation with another.

The meeting ended with a plan to obtain the complete transaction records and, if necessary, have the signatures and documents examined by an independent specialist. Martin also advised Eleanor not to confront Mark about the old agreement until there was a clearer understanding of his involvement.

On the way home, Eleanor stopped at the supermarket and bought groceries for the week. She moved through the aisles mechanically, placing bread, apples, milk, and vegetables in her trolley. The ordinary routine felt reassuring. For half an hour, she could think about dinner instead of signatures.

When she returned, she found an email from Claire.

It contained no greeting, only a request: “Mum, please don't give Dad's letter to anyone else until Mark has had a chance to explain.”

Eleanor read the sentence several times.

Claire had known that Martin was reviewing the documents. She had now asked her mother to withhold a letter that concerned her own financial security until Mark could explain himself.

Eleanor replied that the documents were being reviewed by her solicitor and that she would not make decisions based on pressure from any side.

She did not add anything about the disappointment she felt.

Later that evening, Mark sent his own message. He said he was concerned that Eleanor's actions might create unnecessary legal complications for the family. He offered to meet her and explain the old development in person.

Eleanor did not refuse the meeting, but she insisted that any discussion about her finances take place with Martin present.

Mark replied that involving lawyers in a family conversation was insulting.

She left the message unanswered.

Before bed, Eleanor returned to Peter's diary. She read the entry about the amendment, then placed it beside the photograph of Peter, David, and Richard Vale.

She still did not know who had altered the agreement or why the revised figures had been accepted. But she now understood that Mark had known about the dispute long before he asked to manage her money, and Claire's concern about the records was no longer merely a matter of curiosity.

Something in the old transaction frightened them.

Eleanor could not yet tell whether they feared a misunderstanding, a financial liability, or the discovery of something more serious.

She would not decide until she knew.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Accounting Firm Finally Located the Missing Authorization, but the Name on the Document Was Not the One Eleanor Expected

The doorbell rang at eight the following morning, just as Eleanor was preparing to leave for Martin’s office.
