Tyler's name appeared on my phone, and I answered with a cheerful greeting. He usually called around that time to tell me about his day or ask whether I had seen something interesting in the neighborhood.

This time, he sounded tense.

“Mom, can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“It's about money.”

I turned down the heat beneath the pot. “All right. What's happened?”

He explained that his truck had developed a serious mechanical problem. The repair shop had found damage to the transmission, and the estimate was considerably higher than he had expected. He needed the truck to get to work and transport his tools, but the repair would consume most of the savings he had accumulated since beginning his new job.

“I can manage the monthly bills,” he said, “but if I pay the whole repair bill now, I'll have almost nothing left for emergencies.”

I understood the problem. A vehicle was not a luxury for someone whose work depended on reaching job sites with the necessary equipment. At the same time, I remembered the promises Tyler had made about managing his finances and not depending on my savings.

“What are you thinking of doing?” I asked.

“I've spoken to the mechanic about a payment arrangement. He'll let me pay part now and the rest over two months, but I would still have to put down a substantial amount.”

“Have you considered getting a second estimate?”

“Yes. Another shop said the problem was real, although the price was a little lower.”

“Have you asked your supervisor whether there's any flexibility with transportation while the truck is being repaired?”

“I haven't. I don't want to seem unreliable.”

I sat down at the kitchen table. Tyler was not asking for money yet, but I could hear the question approaching.

“Have you worked out how much you can afford to pay without missing your regular expenses?”

“Yes. I've gone through the numbers twice.”

He paused.

“I was wondering whether you could lend me some of the difference. I would pay you back according to the same plan we discussed before.”

For a moment, I said nothing. His request was reasonable in one sense. He needed transportation to maintain his employment, and he had made a genuine effort to find alternatives. Yet I knew that a decision made out of fear could undermine the independence we had both worked to establish.

“How much are you asking for?” I said.

“Three thousand dollars.”

I looked toward the desk where my financial records were kept. I could afford the amount, but that wasn't the only question that mattered.

“Tyler, why don't you send me the repair estimate and the budget you've prepared? I'll look at them, and then we can talk.”

He sounded relieved. “Thank you, Mom. I appreciate it.”

“I'm not promising to lend you the money. I want to understand the situation first.”

“I know.”

After we ended the call, I returned to the soup, but my appetite had diminished. I remembered the earlier conversations in which Tyler had admitted that he used to avoid looking at his finances until a crisis forced him to act. Now he had called before making a decision, gathered estimates, and prepared a budget. Those were meaningful differences.

Still, I didn't want to confuse better behavior with an obligation to provide financial assistance.

The documents arrived the following morning. Tyler had included the mechanic's estimate, the alternative quote, his monthly budget, and a brief explanation of the payment arrangements available to him. The figures were clear, and he had not concealed the effect the repair would have on his emergency savings.

I reviewed everything over breakfast. The expense was genuine, and the truck was necessary for his work. I also noticed that he had listed two other possibilities: borrowing a vehicle from a colleague for a few days or taking public transportation while he saved for the repair.

Neither option was convenient, but both were possible.

I called Rebecca to ask whether there were any estate-planning implications I should consider if I made a private loan to Tyler. She reminded me that the most important issue was clarity. Any arrangement should be documented, affordable, and entirely separate from my charitable plans.

“You don't need to make the decision today,” she said. “And you don't need to lend money simply because you can afford to do so.”

I thanked her and ended the call.

That afternoon, Tyler came over to discuss the estimates. We sat at the kitchen table, and I placed his papers between us.

“You've done a good job gathering the information,” I said.

He looked relieved. “I wanted you to see that I'm not just asking you to solve it.”

“I can see that. But I need you to tell me what you think your best option is, even if I decide not to lend you anything.”

He studied the figures.

“I think I should ask my supervisor about transportation first. If I can get to work without the truck for a few days, I can avoid making a rushed decision. Then I'll see whether the mechanic will accept a smaller deposit.”

“Why haven't you asked your supervisor yet?”

“Pride, probably.” He gave a tired smile. “I don't want people thinking I can't manage my life.”

“People who work with you may be more understanding than you expect.”

He nodded.

“I know. I'm trying to get better at that.”

We reviewed the budget together. He had already reduced discretionary spending and set aside a modest amount each month for repairs. The truck problem was still a serious setback, but it was not impossible to manage without a loan from me.

I told him I was willing to consider a limited loan if the other options failed, provided we agreed on a realistic repayment schedule. I also made it clear that I would not borrow against my own future needs or use the foundation's resources for the purpose.

Tyler listened carefully.

“I understand,” he said. “And I don't want you to feel you have to lend it to me.”

“Then let's see what you can arrange first.”

He left with the papers and promised to speak with his supervisor.

Two days later, he called to say that his supervisor had agreed to let him ride with another employee for the remainder of the week. The arrangement would require him to leave home earlier, and he would have to contribute toward fuel, but it would allow him to continue working while he negotiated the repair.

The mechanic had also agreed to divide the bill into three payments.

“I think I can manage it,” Tyler said. “It'll be tight for a couple of months, but I won't have to take out a loan.”

“Are you certain the payments won't leave you short on essential expenses?”

“I've checked the budget. I'll still have a small reserve.”

I felt relieved.

“Then it sounds as though you've found a workable solution.”

He was quiet for a moment.

“Thank you for listening, Mom. I know you could have simply said no.”

“I could have. But you came to me with a problem and a plan, and I wanted to help you think it through.”

“I appreciate that.”

We ended the call, and I sat quietly for a few moments. I had not given Tyler the three thousand dollars, yet I had helped him in a way that strengthened his ability to manage the situation himself.

That distinction mattered.

Over the following weeks, Tyler kept me updated on the repairs. He paid the mechanic according to the schedule, continued putting small amounts into his emergency fund, and began setting aside money for routine vehicle maintenance. He even asked his supervisor whether the company offered any training in equipment management, hoping to improve his skills and become eligible for more responsibility.

I was proud of his efforts, but I tried not to turn every improvement into a celebration. He needed to learn that responsible decisions were ordinary parts of adult life, not performances designed to win my approval.

Jessica called one evening to thank me for helping Tyler work through the problem.

“He was worried you'd be disappointed in him for asking,” she said.

“I wasn't disappointed that he asked. I wanted him to consider his options.”

“He said you didn't make him feel ashamed.”

I felt a pang of sadness at that. I had never wanted my son to feel ashamed of needing help. What I had wanted was for him to recognize that asking for assistance did not entitle him to a particular answer.

“I hope he understands that he can talk to me,” I said. “But we still have to respect each other's decisions.”

“I think he understands that now.”

We spoke for a few more minutes before ending the call.

Later that night, I went into the living room and looked at William's photograph. I wondered what he would have said about the truck problem. He would probably have asked to see the repair estimate, checked the numbers, and reminded Tyler that a problem became more manageable once it was examined honestly.

I smiled at the thought.

The foundation's planning continued during that period. Martin had reviewed the proposed budget, and Helen was identifying possible educational partners. We were still several months away from launching the first workshop, but the work was becoming more concrete.

I was learning to apply the same principles at home that I wanted the foundation to teach: understand the problem, gather reliable information, consider alternatives, and make decisions that could be sustained.

Tyler was learning those principles too.

One Saturday, he came over to help me prune the roses. As we worked, he told me that the truck repairs were almost paid off and that he had managed to preserve a small amount of his emergency savings.

“It's not much,” he said, “but at least I'm not starting from zero again.”

“That's worth something.”

He nodded, clipping a dead stem from the bush.

“I used to think that if I had enough money, I wouldn't have to worry. Now I think I need to know what to do when something goes wrong.”

I looked at him.

“That's a much more useful kind of confidence.”

He smiled, then returned to the roses.

For the first time, a financial difficulty had brought us closer without making me feel responsible for solving it. Tyler had asked for help, accepted that I might decline, and found a solution that allowed him to keep moving forward.

It was a small success, but it was real.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: When the Foundation Received Its First Serious Application, I Recognized a Familiar Mistake and Had to Choose Between Sympathy and Fairness

The call came on a Monday evening while I was preparing soup for dinner.
