He reached for the photograph, then stopped before touching it.

“Where did she get this?”

“You tell me,” Daniel replied.

Robert sat down slowly. “Thomas Wren was the county administrator in 1990. He controlled the registrar's budget and had authority over several departments that rarely communicated with one another. He was the person everyone went to when a file needed to be moved quietly.”

“Was he the one who ordered my record changed?”

“I suspected he was involved. I never had proof that he gave the order himself.”

Evelyn took the photograph from Daniel and studied it. “I remember Wren. He visited the hospital several times during that period. He never signed anything, but people changed their behavior whenever he entered a room.”

“Is he alive?” Margaret asked.

Robert nodded. “As far as I know, he retired to a house outside Harrisburg. He served on two charitable boards and kept his name out of the newspapers after leaving office.”

Daniel placed the photograph beside the ledgers. A new name had appeared at the center of the story, but it did not simplify anything. If Wren had ordered the false record, he might also have arranged Samuel's death, Robert's disappearance, and the destruction of the original evidence. The recent payments suggested that his influence had survived the years.

“What did Elaine know about him?” Daniel asked.

Robert rubbed his palms together. “More than she told me. She kept copies of documents in places I never knew about. After she died, I searched her desk and found only household papers. I thought she had destroyed everything.”

“She left this letter with you.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you give it to me when you disappeared?”

“Because the certificate hadn't surfaced yet. I was following the condition she set.”

Daniel's patience snapped. “You have an answer for every decision you made, and every answer depends on someone else's instructions. Did you ever consider telling me the truth because I deserved it?”

Robert said nothing.

Margaret intervened before the argument could deepen. “We need to understand what the letter means. Elaine knew the people involved were moving money again. That means she was watching the trust even after she left Bellwether.”

Evelyn opened the notebook to the latest transactions. She pointed to a payment made three months earlier, followed by two smaller transfers to an account registered under a company called Wren Civic Services.

“Thomas Wren may have kept control through a private organization,” she said. “If the account is still active, he could be paying someone to maintain the false records.”

Daniel copied the company name into his phone. The first search produced a charitable foundation established in 2007. Its stated purpose was to support community development and preserve historic buildings. Thomas Wren appeared as a founding trustee, though the current public filings listed a different board.

The foundation's latest annual report showed grants to three organizations, including a records preservation project in Bellwether County.

Northbridge Records Annex had received a maintenance grant.

Daniel looked at Evelyn. “The archive is supposed to be empty, but someone is paying to keep it running.”

“That is exactly what Samuel feared,” she said.

They spent the next hour examining the papers. The ledgers contained references to six children, each linked to a false death record and a private trust. Four identities had been used in property transfers. One had been closed after a legal dispute. The final entry contained only a code and the initials E.S.

Evelyn stared at it for a long time.

“That's my name,” she said.

Margaret's expression hardened. “What does it mean?”

“I don't know. I never received money from the trust.”

“But your initials are here.”

“Yes.”

Daniel turned the page toward the light. Beside Evelyn's initials was a date: March 12, 1992. Under it appeared a note: ORIGINAL REGISTER SECURED. WITNESS COMPROMISED.

“What happened that day?” he asked.

Evelyn folded her hands. “I disappeared from Bellwether that spring. Someone told me the hospital records would be destroyed if I stayed. I took a job in another state and changed my name after receiving threats. I assumed the original register had already been removed.”

“Did you ever tell anyone what you knew?”

“I sent copies to a lawyer in Harrisburg. He agreed to represent me, then withdrew after a meeting with Wren. I never heard from him again.”

“Do you remember his name?”

“Martin Keene.”

Daniel searched for the lawyer. He found a notice of death dated 1998 and a brief obituary stating that Keene had served as legal counsel to several county agencies. His former office was now occupied by a title company.

Another connection had vanished into the past.

Robert paced the kitchen. “If Wren is still controlling the annex, he'll know the archive release has exposed the death certificate. We need to get the evidence to someone outside his network before he can destroy it.”

“Who?” Daniel asked.

“A state investigator who worked with Samuel before the accident. Her name was Helen Price. She left the attorney general's office years ago, but she may still have copies of the original complaint.”

Evelyn shook her head. “If she had those copies, she would have acted.”

“Not necessarily,” Robert replied. “She may have been unable to prove the documents were authentic. We have the ledgers and the tapes now.”

Daniel looked at the recorder. The voices on the tapes established that the false death record had been planned in advance, but the recordings did not identify Thomas Wren directly. The photograph was suggestive, not conclusive. They needed the original register and the authorization that had allowed the hospital to declare a living child dead.

He decided to contact Helen Price before they entered the annex.

Robert gave him an old address and a telephone number. Daniel called from Margaret's landline, leaving a message that mentioned Samuel Vale, the hospital records, and the reference number 4172. He did not include his own name.

A few minutes later, the phone rang.

A woman's voice answered. “Who gave you this number?”

“My name is Daniel Mercer. I found records connected to Samuel Vale.”

There was a pause.

“Where are you calling from?”

“Bellwether.”

“Then you should leave.”

Daniel tightened his grip on the receiver. “You knew Samuel?”

“I knew him well enough to know he wouldn't want you standing in the middle of that town with those records.”

“He's dead.”

“I know what the official report says.”

“Then help me prove what happened.”

The woman exhaled slowly. “Do you have the ledger?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have the recordings?”

“Yes.”

“Then listen carefully. Do not take them to the county courthouse. Do not send copies to anyone whose name appears in those documents. And do not enter Northbridge alone.”

“Why?”

“Because the annex has not been empty for years.”

The line went silent.

Daniel called back, but the number no longer accepted incoming calls. He looked at Robert.

“She knows the building is occupied.”

Robert nodded. “That confirms it.”

Margaret began gathering the papers into the leather case. Evelyn took the original register forms and placed them between sheets of cardboard to keep them flat. Daniel copied every transaction page, then sent encrypted files to two separate email accounts. He did not know whether the accounts were secure enough, but he wanted evidence outside the house before they moved.

As they prepared to leave, Robert took Daniel aside.

“There is something I haven't told you,” he said.

Daniel stared at him. “That seems to be a habit.”

Robert accepted the rebuke. “When Elaine and I first brought you home, we received a letter from Thomas Wren. He said the adoption was legal and that the money placed in the trust belonged to you. He also said that if we ever challenged the death record, the adoption could be voided.”

“Was that true?”

“I don't know. We were young, frightened, and already under surveillance. Elaine believed the letter was meant to keep us compliant. I believed it was a warning we couldn't afford to ignore.”

“Did you keep the letter?”

“No. Elaine burned it.”

Daniel looked toward the photograph of his mother. “She kept this, though.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Robert hesitated. “She said one day you would need to know that she had not chosen silence because she was ashamed of you.”

The words struck Daniel harder than he expected. He had spent years believing his mother had simply avoided discussing the past. He had sometimes wondered whether there was something about his infancy that she could not bear to remember. The letter suggested that her silence had been a deliberate attempt to protect him, though the protection had come at an enormous cost.

He put the photograph into his pocket.

“We leave at dawn,” he said. “We find the original register, then we take everything to Helen Price or another investigator outside Bellwether.”

Robert nodded.

Evelyn closed the leather case. “There's one more thing. If Wren ordered the record changed, he may have needed someone inside the hospital to sign the transfer. I did not sign it. Dr. Cole did not authorize it. That leaves one person whose name appears on every version of the document.”

“Who?” Daniel asked.

“Peter Haldane.”

Daniel remembered the recording in which Haldane had described the arrangement. The lawyer had known about the false death certificate and the trust. He had also seemed afraid of the person giving the orders.

“What if Haldane wasn't just following instructions?” Daniel asked.

Evelyn looked down at the ledger.

“That is what I have been afraid of.”

Daniel opened the notebook to the earliest entries and found Haldane's initials beside the first payment. The amount was larger than the others, and the recipient account had been registered under a name that appeared nowhere else in the records.

PETER H. TRUST.

Beside the entry, someone had written a short note in red ink.

ORIGINATOR.

Daniel felt the meaning settle into place. Haldane might not have been merely the lawyer who arranged the adoption. He might have created the financial mechanism that made the entire scheme possible.

Before Daniel could say anything, his phone vibrated. An email had arrived from an address he did not recognize. It contained no greeting, only a scanned page from an old court file.

The page showed a sealed order dated November 6, 1990, authorizing the removal of Daniel Vale's birth record. Beneath Judge Bell's signature was a second signature.

Peter Haldane.

At the bottom, in a handwritten note, were the words:

If the child survives, the trust remains under my control.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Hidden Archive Opened a Door to Six Missing Children and a Secret Even Robert Had Never Seen

Daniel read the name aloud. “Thomas Wren.” Robert looked as though someone had struck him.
