She recovered almost immediately, inviting us inside and asking what had brought us back.

“We need to talk about your father's records,” I said.

She led us into the same study where we had found the photograph of Thomas as a child. The room had been rearranged since our previous visit, and the filing cabinet beneath the window was now locked.

Thomas placed copies of the property agreements on the table.

“Your father helped fund Northfield,” he said. “He also kept records connected to a disputed property transfer. After he died, control of those records passed to a company you directed.”

Rebecca looked at the papers without touching them.

“I inherited a collection of historical documents. I didn't know they were connected to a fraud.”

“Did you know about the blue ledger?” Daniel asked.

She hesitated.

“I heard the term once. My father said it contained private financial information that shouldn't be released without legal review.”

“Who told you that?”

“Arthur Bell.”

I felt a chill.

“Arthur was dead by then.”

“He had left instructions with the estate.”

“Did you follow those instructions?”

“I preserved the records. That's what I was asked to do.”

Thomas leaned forward.

“Someone has been accessing the Northfield files under Mara's name. Someone reopened a storage unit and removed its contents. Those activities happened around the time your company took control of the trust.”

Rebecca's expression hardened.

“Are you accusing me of using a false identity?”

“I'm asking whether you know who did.”

“No.”

I placed the copied transfer documents on the table.

“Your name appears on the appointment transferring control of the trust. We found evidence that the records were altered, and we have a letter showing that your father knew the correspondence to Thomas was being intercepted.”

Rebecca looked at the letter.

For the first time, she seemed genuinely unsettled.

“My father would never have approved that.”

“Then perhaps someone used his position to do it.”

She sat down.

“I didn't know any of this was happening.”

Thomas studied her face.

“Then help us find out who did.”

Rebecca was silent for a long moment. Finally, she unlocked the filing cabinet and removed a thick folder.

“I kept the original appointment papers,” she said. “I didn't understand why they were important, but I was told never to destroy them.”

She placed the folder on the table.

Inside were copies of the trust documents, correspondence from Arthur Bell, and a signed appointment transferring administrative authority to Bell Heritage Services. The original appointment had been witnessed by a lawyer whose name I recognized from the post-office records.

Samuel Price.

Beneath his signature was a second witness.

Robert Ellis.

My father had witnessed the transfer that eventually placed control of the records in Arthur's hands.

I stared at the page.

“Dad signed this too.”

Rebecca nodded.

“I thought he was simply confirming the transfer.”

“Did you know he had tried to challenge the original property agreement?”

“No.”

I showed her Edward's copies.

Rebecca compared the documents, her expression growing more troubled with each page.

“These versions don't match,” she whispered.

“No,” Daniel replied. “The schedules were changed after the original agreement was signed.”

She looked at the signatures.

“My father said the records were complicated. He told me not to release anything without consulting the trustee.”

“Who was the trustee?” I asked.

Rebecca turned to the final page.

A name appeared beneath the appointment.

Edward Morgan.

Thomas shook his head.

“Edward told us he had been removed from the arrangement.”

Rebecca looked up.

“He was replaced after the dispute became public within the family. My father assumed the new appointment had been properly executed.”

“Who replaced him?”

She searched through the folder and found a later document.

The replacement trustee was a company registered under the name Bell Heritage Services. Its director was listed as Rebecca Lawson.

She stared at the page.

“I never signed this.”

“Then who did?” Daniel asked.

Rebecca examined the signature closely.

“It looks like mine, but I didn't write it.”

The room fell silent.

Someone had forged Rebecca's signature to take control of the trust. The person had used her position and her father's reputation to gain access to the records, then continued the same pattern of concealment that had begun thirty years earlier.

“Do you know who prepared the document?” I asked.

Rebecca turned to the attached correspondence.

A letter from a law office explained that the transfer had been approved under a power of attorney granted by the previous trustee. The authorization had been signed by Samuel Price shortly before his death.

But the date was wrong.

Price had died three months before the authorization was supposedly signed.

Daniel pointed to the discrepancy.

“This document was created after he was dead.”

Rebecca covered her mouth.

“I never noticed.”

I looked at her.

“Who had access to the original files?”

“My father's estate lawyer. A former assistant. And a man who worked with Arthur Bell on the property records.”

“What's his name?”

She hesitated.

“Michael Bell.”

Thomas went completely still.

“Michael?”

Rebecca nodded.

“He was listed as a consultant when the company was established. I assumed he was helping organize the collection.”

Thomas stood.

“You told us you didn't know what happened to him.”

Rebecca looked confused.

“I don't understand.”

“He was at Northfield with me. He disappeared from the records after my father took me away.”

Rebecca lowered her eyes.

“I didn't know you were Thomas.”

“Did Michael contact you six months ago?”

She nodded slowly.

“He asked for access to the trust files. He said he was trying to settle an old family matter. I refused because the request lacked proper authorization.”

“Where is he now?”

“I don't know. He hasn't contacted me in months.”

I looked at the forged appointment.

Someone had used Rebecca's name to obtain control of the records, but Michael had also been trying to access them. He might have been attempting to expose the fraud, or he might have been involved in maintaining it.

We couldn't assume either possibility.

Rebecca opened another drawer and removed a notebook.

“This belonged to my father. He kept a record of everyone who visited the archive. I found it after his death but never read it carefully.”

She turned to a page dated six months earlier.

Michael Bell had visited the collection twice. On the second visit, he had asked specifically for the original property deed and the blue ledger.

A handwritten note followed.

He says Evelyn is alive. Wants proof of the transfer and the identity of the beneficiary.

Thomas gripped the edge of the table.

“Evelyn is alive?”

Rebecca looked at him.

“I don't know. That's what he claimed.”

I felt my heart race.

“Did he say where she was?”

“No. He said he had received a letter from someone using her name.”

Thomas sat down slowly.

For thirty years, he had believed his mother was gone. Now we had another possible lead, but it came through a man whose role in the mystery remained uncertain.

Rebecca turned another page.

The final entry contained a telephone number and a note written in hurried handwriting.

Michael says the ledger's final page identifies the person who ordered the original transfer. He believes the name is still being protected by the trust.

I looked at Daniel.

“We need the ledger.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“The ledger isn't here. My father believed it had been removed before he took control of the archive.”

“By whom?”

She pointed to a final document tucked inside the notebook.

It was a receipt for the transfer of a sealed package from the trust to a private storage facility. The signature belonged to Michael Bell.

The date was six months earlier.

The address was a storage complex in the same town where my father had once kept unit 204.

Thomas stood and picked up the receipt.

“Then Michael may have the ledger.”

“Or he may have taken it to keep it from being destroyed,” I said.

Rebecca looked between us.

“If you find him, tell him I never authorized that transfer. I want the records restored, and I want the truth about my father's role made public.”

I believed her, at least for the moment. She had given us the documents even though they exposed the fraud and implicated her own family. That didn't prove she was innocent, but it suggested she was willing to confront what had been hidden.

Before we left, she copied the notebook and the forged appointment for us.

Outside, Thomas stood beside the car, holding the receipt in both hands.

“Michael may know what happened to my mother,” he said.

“Or he may know who has been sending the threats,” Daniel replied.

I looked at the address.

The storage facility was only a short drive away.

We had spent weeks following records, photographs, and letters that seemed to lead nowhere. Now we had a specific destination and a person who had once stood beside Thomas at Northfield.

I called my mother to tell her where we were going. She asked me to be careful, then said something that stopped me before I could end the call.

“Mara, if Michael is involved, ask him about the blue scarf.”

I frowned.

“What blue scarf?”

“The one Evelyn wore in the photograph. Your father once told me that she had given it to someone before she disappeared.”

I looked at Thomas.

He heard the words and went pale.

“My mother wore a blue scarf the day I last saw her,” he said.

He took the receipt from my hand and examined the address.

“Then we need to find Michael before whoever has the ledger finds him first.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 21: The Storage Unit Where Michael Bell Left the Truth Behind

Rebecca answered the door herself.
