My mother had returned to the sitting room, where Lily was drawing, leaving the rest of us surrounded by documents that seemed to multiply every time we found an answer.

“Who manages the collection now?” I asked.

Daniel scrolled through the notice. “A company called Bell Heritage Services. It was registered under a different name until about six months ago.”

The timing made my stomach tighten.

“Six months ago,” I repeated. “When someone reopened the storage locker under my name.”

“And accessed the Northfield records,” Thomas added.

I sat down and pulled the property agreement closer. The document bore my father's signature, but the note attached to it stated that the transfer had never been completed. If Arthur had kept the original records, he might have known whether the transaction had been fraudulent from the beginning.

“What if Arthur wasn't the person who appointed Samuel Price?” Daniel asked. “What if someone used Arthur's name?”

Thomas shook his head. “Arthur was involved. I know that much. But involvement doesn't tell us who made the decisions.”

He was right. We had been treating the family as though it contained one villain and several frightened witnesses. The evidence suggested something more complicated: people who had made promises, people who had accepted money, people who had concealed records, and people who might have tried to correct their mistakes too late.

My mother returned carrying a small cardboard box.

“I found something else,” she said.

She placed it on the table and removed a stack of old greeting cards, photographs, and envelopes. Beneath them lay a yellowed newspaper clipping announcing the engagement of Arthur Bell's sister, Evelyn, to a man named Charles Morgan.

Thomas stared at the clipping.

“I've never heard of Charles Morgan.”

“Neither have I,” my mother said. “Evelyn mentioned him once, but she said the engagement had been called off.”

Daniel took the clipping and checked the date. It had been published about a year before Thomas's birth.

“Could Charles have been his father?”

Thomas's face tightened. “It's possible. My birth certificate lists no father.”

I looked at my mother.

“Did Dad ever mention Charles?”

She shook her head.

“But Arthur might have.”

Daniel returned to the laptop and searched for the name. He found a property record from the same period showing that Charles Morgan had been listed as a co-owner of land later transferred to the private company mentioned in our documents.

The record also showed that Morgan had signed a power of attorney authorizing Samuel Price to act on his behalf.

“That's the connection,” Daniel said. “Charles appointed Price to handle his interests.”

“Then why did Evelyn's letter say we needed to identify the person who appointed the trustee?” I asked.

“Because Charles may not have been acting alone,” Thomas replied. “Someone else could have arranged the appointment through him.”

I looked at the clipping again. The photograph showed a young man with a broad forehead and a reserved expression. He looked nothing like Thomas, but family resemblance could be difficult to judge from a grainy newspaper image.

“What happened to Charles?” I asked.

Daniel searched the public records. A death notice appeared, followed by a probate filing. Charles had died twenty-five years earlier, leaving his property to a private trust managed by a law firm that had since merged with another practice.

The trust's surviving records listed a beneficiary whose name had been redacted in the online copy.

We needed the original file.

Thomas leaned against the counter.

“If Charles was my father, then the property dispute may have involved my inheritance.”

“Which would explain why your identity mattered,” I said.

“And why someone might have wanted me out of the way,” he replied.

The possibility hung over the room.

My father had removed Thomas from Northfield shortly after the boy began questioning the missing letters. If Thomas had been entitled to property or money, his disappearance might have made it easier for someone else to control those assets.

But that still didn't explain why my father had signed the disputed transfer agreement.

I opened his letter again, the one in which he wrote about a promise and a cost he couldn't explain. The words seemed more troubling now. Perhaps he had helped move Thomas because he believed the boy was in danger. Perhaps he had also helped conceal the financial arrangement that made him vulnerable.

I wanted to believe those actions were separate.

I couldn't prove they were.

Daniel found a telephone number for the law firm that had inherited the trust records. He called and explained that we were researching a historical property transaction involving Charles Morgan and Samuel Price. The receptionist took our details and promised that someone would respond.

While we waited, Thomas examined the photographs from the tin box.

He stopped at one showing Evelyn beside Arthur outside the old Bell property. The picture had been taken several years before her disappearance. Arthur looked directly at the camera, but Evelyn was watching someone beyond the frame.

Thomas turned the photograph over.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

He knows what the papers say.

“Who is he talking about?” I asked.

Thomas looked at the picture again.

“I don't know. But my mother was looking at someone when this was taken.”

“Could it have been Charles?”

“Possibly.”

My mother touched the edge of the photograph.

“Evelyn once told me that Charles wasn't the man she feared. She said he had signed things he didn't understand, and that someone else had used his name to make the transactions look legitimate.”

“Did she ever identify that person?” I asked.

“No.”

The telephone rang.

Daniel answered, listened, and then asked the caller to repeat the name.

His expression changed.

When he hung up, he looked at us.

“The law firm found the original trust index. Charles Morgan appointed Samuel Price, but the appointment was witnessed by someone else.”

“Who?” Thomas asked.

Daniel glanced at the screen.

“Robert Ellis.”

My father's name seemed to drain the warmth from the kitchen.

I stared at the record.

“He witnessed the appointment?”

“Yes.”

“Then Dad knew exactly who appointed the trustee.”

Daniel nodded.

“And if Evelyn was right about the trustee, Dad may have known who we should fear.”

I looked toward the staircase. Lily was still upstairs, drawing quietly, unaware that the questions surrounding her grandfather had become a question about his own choices.

For years, I had thought my father's silence was a form of protection. Now I wondered whether he had spent those years trying to repair something he had helped create.

Thomas gathered the letters into a neat stack.

“We need the original trust file,” he said. “If Robert witnessed the appointment, there may be another document explaining why.”

Daniel wrote down the firm's address.

The next morning, we would travel to the city and ask to see the records.

Before we could leave the kitchen, my mother spoke.

“There is one person we haven't considered.”

I turned toward her.

“Who?”

She looked at the newspaper clipping of Evelyn and Charles.

“Your father once told me that Charles Morgan had a brother. A man who handled the family's business affairs but rarely appeared in public.”

“What was his name?”

My mother closed her eyes, searching her memory.

“Edward.”

She opened them again.

“Edward Morgan was the person Arthur refused to discuss. Whenever Evelyn mentioned him, your father became frightened.”

Thomas looked at the photograph in his hands.

“Then we need to find Edward Morgan.”

Daniel searched the name, but the results were sparse. One old business filing showed that Edward had served as a director of the private company involved in the property transfers. Another record indicated that he had resigned shortly before Evelyn disappeared.

There was no death notice, no recent address, and no clear indication of what had happened to him.

The last document listed a forwarding address.

It belonged to a post-office box.

The same type of address my father had mentioned in his letter to me.

I stared at the screen.

We had finally found a name that connected the trustee, the disputed property, and Evelyn's disappearance. But the trail led to an address that might have been abandoned decades ago.

And somewhere beyond that address was the person who had kept our family frightened of the truth.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The Abandoned Post-Office Box Contained a Letter That Named the Person My Father Had Been Protecting

Daniel read the archive notice three times before closing his laptop. “Arthur Bell's estate transferred the legal papers to a private collection,” he said. “But the collection doesn't appear to …

[1

post-34893","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-insightdrama
["GET
