\nState police contacted the hotel.

\nPaul Mercer was not his real name.
\nHis fingerprints identified him as Julian Hale, Calvin Grant\u2019s former cellmate and a licensed pilot whose credentials had been revoked after a smuggling conviction.
\nHe had posed as a county officer using documents Rourke provided.
\nHe had helped serve the fraudulent guardianship order because it placed him close enough to Sarah\u2019s home to study the property.
\nEvery step had been planned long before I changed my lock.
\nFederal agents wanted to send a negotiator in my place.
\nRourke would recognize the substitution.
\nThey suggested using a duplicate ledger.
\nRourke knew the original contained watermarks and handwritten corrections.<\/p>\n

Finally, the commander proposed attaching a tracking device inside the cover.
\n\u201cHe will scan it,\u201d Ruiz warned.
\nRuiz had been cleared to assist after forensic experts determined that the audio recording using his voice had been created from old police interviews.
\nThe payment marked D.R. had gone to a company owned by David Rourke.
\nRuiz\u2019s identity had been chosen because the matching initials created an easy suspect if the ledger was discovered.
\n\u201cThen no tracker,\u201d I said.
\nThe commander shook his head.
\n\u201cYou are not walking into that hangar without one.\u201d
\n\u201cIf he finds it, Noah dies.\u201d
\nDerek stepped forward.

\nAt 5:27 a.m., I approached the north entrance carrying the original protection ledger inside a clear plastic bag.
\nThe federal teams remained beyond the surrounding fields.
\nDerek waited inside an armored vehicle with Ruiz.
\nA surveillance drone hovered high enough that Rourke could not hear it.
\nThe hangar door opened.
\nJulian Mercer stepped outside holding a rifle.

\n\u201cBecause I will be on your plane.\u201d
\nRourke studied me.
\n\u201cYou would exchange yourself for your nephew?\u201d
\n\u201cI am not exchanging anyone. I am removing a child from a crime adults created.\u201d
\nNoah looked at me.
\n\u201cIs my dad here?\u201d
\n\u201cYes.\u201d
\n\u201cCan he see me?\u201d
\n\u201cYes.\u201d
\nRourke cut the cord from Noah\u2019s wrists.
\n\u201cWalk toward the entrance.\u201d
\nNoah hesitated.
\n\u201cGo,\u201d I told him.
\nHe began walking.

\nThe federal vehicles moved.
\nThe plane accelerated.
\nRuiz\u2019s voice came through an emergency loudspeaker.
\n\u201cRourke, the ledger has already been copied. Taking it changes nothing.\u201d
\nRourke smiled.
\n\u201cThe ledger isn\u2019t why I came.\u201d
\nHe struck the side of my neck with the gun.

\nThe plane lifted from the runway.
