Daniel laid them across the table, arranging them by date while Thomas studied each page.

When he reached the school report dated June eighteenth, he stopped.

“This is the document that convinced me Robert had taken me away to protect himself.”

“Why?” I asked.

“Because the report says he arrived before dawn and removed me without giving anyone a destination. I believed he was trying to keep me from talking to Michael.”

“Did your father ever tell you what happened to Michael?” Daniel asked.

Thomas shook his head.

“He told me that Michael had left Northfield voluntarily. But I later learned that Michael had been dismissed, and the records of his departure were missing. Robert knew more than he admitted.”

He placed the report back on the table.

“After I left Northfield, I lived with a family who knew nothing about Evelyn. They were kind to me. Robert visited twice during the first year, then stopped coming. I received money through a bank account I couldn't trace, and when I turned eighteen, the payments ended.”

“Did you ever try to find him?” I asked.

“Yes. I went to the house where he and Helen lived, but they had moved. I wrote to the repair shop, but the owner told me Robert had died. By then, I had spent years believing my mother was gone and my childhood had been deliberately taken from me.”

I wanted to tell him that my father had been a good man in many ways. I wanted to explain the small kindnesses, the quiet evenings, the way he repaired broken toys and kept every drawing I made.

But none of those memories could erase what Thomas had lost.

Instead, I asked, “What do you know about the blue ledger?”

Thomas leaned back.

“Arthur once told me that it had been hidden in a place connected to the original property dispute. He said the documents inside could prove that several families had been cheated out of land. But he also warned me that the ledger contained information about people who had never been involved in the wrongdoing.”

“Why would their names be there?”

“Because the payments were made through relatives, shell companies, and false accounts. Some people had unknowingly signed documents they didn't understand. Others had been listed as beneficiaries without ever receiving money.”

Daniel looked at the copied records.

“That explains why my father might have been afraid of what would happen if the ledger became public.”

Thomas nodded.

“He believed the truth should be exposed, but he was worried about innocent people being dragged into it. He said that once a document like that became public, nobody could control how it was used.”

I thought of the warning my mother had received, telling her that the ledger no longer existed.

“Do you know where the book is hidden?”

Thomas took a small key from his pocket. It was different from the brass key marked 204, smaller and darker, with a worn leather tag attached to its ring.

“My mother gave this to Robert before she disappeared,” he said. “He gave it to me years later, along with instructions to keep it until I understood what it opened.”

I stared at the key.

“Why didn't you tell us about it when we first spoke?”

“Because I didn't know whether you were here to help me or to recover the ledger for someone else.”

He was right to be cautious. We had known each other for less than an hour, and both of our families had kept secrets that had shaped his entire life.

“What does the key open?” Daniel asked.

“A box in a disused building near the old Bell property. I found the location in one of Robert's letters, but I never went inside. I was afraid someone might be watching.”

“Do you still have the letter?”

Thomas nodded.

He unfolded a sheet of paper and passed it to me.

The letter was dated several years before my father's death. It contained a short description of a stone building near an abandoned orchard, followed by instructions to look for a loose brick beneath a window.

At the bottom, my father's handwriting was unmistakable.

Do not open the box until you are ready to learn what happened to Evelyn. The truth is not contained in the ledger alone.

I looked at Daniel.

“The letter suggests there is something else inside.”

Thomas stood.

“That's why I wanted to meet you. I think we should go there together.”

We drove to the old Bell property in separate cars, agreeing to meet at the entrance. The estate had been divided decades earlier, and much of the original land was now covered by scrub and young trees. A rusted gate leaned beside the road, its chain hanging loose.

Thomas led us along a narrow path toward a small stone building partly hidden by an overgrown hedge.

The structure had once been a garden storehouse. Its wooden door was warped, and ivy covered the northern wall. Beneath a window, one brick protruded slightly from the surrounding stone.

Thomas removed it carefully.

Behind it was a narrow recess containing a small metal box.

He used the key.

The lock turned.

Inside lay a bundle of letters tied with string, a photograph of Evelyn, and a folded document sealed inside a clear plastic sleeve.

Daniel lifted the letters while I examined the document.

It was a property transfer agreement dated thirty years earlier. Several names appeared on the first page, including Arthur Bell and Samuel Price. Near the bottom was a signature I recognized immediately.

Robert Ellis.

My father's signature.

I read the document carefully. It appeared to authorize the transfer of a parcel of land from a family trust to a private company. The company had been registered under a name none of us recognized, and the transaction had been completed shortly after Evelyn disappeared.

“Dad signed this?” Daniel asked.

“Yes,” I whispered.

Thomas looked at the document.

“Then he was involved.”

The conclusion felt unavoidable. Whatever my father had intended, his signature was on the agreement that had moved the property.

I turned to the second page.

There was a handwritten note attached to the back.

The transfer was never completed. Original ownership remains disputed pending verification of the beneficiary's identity.

Beneath it was another signature.

Evelyn Bell.

My heart began to race.

“She's listed as a beneficiary.”

Thomas took the page from me.

“Then she was alive when this was written.”

The date was from two years after her supposed disappearance.

For a moment, hope seemed to enter the room. If Evelyn had signed the document, perhaps she had survived. Perhaps she had simply been unable to return.

But the letters told a more complicated story.

The first was addressed to Arthur Bell and described Evelyn's fear that the property records were being altered. She wrote that someone had threatened to expose Thomas's identity unless she agreed to sign a document transferring her rights.

The second letter was addressed to my father.

Robert, I know you believe you can settle this quietly. But the people involved have already decided what they want. If I disappear, do not let them tell Thomas that I abandoned him. Make sure he knows I tried to come home.

I felt tears gather in my eyes.

Thomas read the letter in silence.

When he finished, he folded it carefully and returned it to the box.

“She knew what they would say,” he whispered.

I looked at the remaining documents.

The final sheet was a receipt showing that a payment had been made to an account registered under my mother's maiden name.

Helen.

The amount was substantial, and the date was only weeks before Evelyn's disappearance.

I turned toward Thomas.

“Did my mother receive money connected to the property transfer?”

He stared at the receipt.

“I don't know.”

Neither did I.

But as I looked at my father's signature and my mother's name on the payment record, a terrible possibility took shape.

Perhaps my father had been trying to protect Thomas from the truth.

Or perhaps he had been trying to protect our family from what it had done.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: The Payment Made in My Mother’s Name Forced Us to Question Everything, Until a Hidden Letter Revealed Who Had Really Been Betrayed

Thomas refused to give us the location immediately.
