She glanced toward a door behind the counter, where a small sign read MANAGER.

I placed the brass key beside the keyboard.

“This was found among my father's belongings. It has the number 204 stamped on it. We're not asking you to give us anything that belongs to someone else. He was a broad-shouldered man with a neatly trimmed beard and a silver watch. He introduced himself as Mr. Collins and asked us to follow him through a corridor lined with metal doors.

“Unit 204 was cleared when the previous contract ended,” he explained. “The person who reopened it signed a temporary storage agreement. The transaction was handled by an employee who no longer works here.”

We reached the end of the corridor. Mr. Collins unlocked a door marked 204 and pushed it open.

The unit was empty except for a rectangular patch on the concrete floor where a box had rested. Dust outlined its former position. On the wall, someone had left a small pencil mark: two intersecting lines beside the number six.

I recognized the mark.

My father used to draw it on the backs of envelopes when he wanted to remember something. He called it a crossroads, though he never explained why.

I stepped inside.

“Was that here when you reopened the unit?” I asked.

Mr. Collins looked at the mark.

“I couldn't tell you.”

Daniel touched my shoulder.

“Mara, look.”

Near the doorway, a strip of adhesive tape clung to the metal frame. Something had been written on it in black ink, but most of the lettering had rubbed away.

I leaned closer.

Only three words remained legible.

ASK YOUR MOTHER.

A cold sensation moved through my chest.

Mr. Collins cleared his throat. “I'm afraid that's all I can show you.”

I wanted to argue, but I knew he was right. We had no legal claim to the unit, and there was nothing left inside it.

Daniel thanked him, and we walked back to the office.

Outside, the rain had stopped. The pavement shone beneath a pale afternoon sky, and traffic moved slowly along the road.

I stood beside the car, staring at the key.

Someone had used my name to reopen a storage unit my father had supposedly emptied. Someone had kept the unit for months, then removed whatever was inside. And whoever had done it had left a message directing me toward my mother.

“Let's call her,” Daniel said.

I shook my head.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because she'll know we've been there as soon as we ask about it. I want to see what she does when she doesn't know what we've found.”

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“You think she'll come back to the house?”

“I think she's already on her way.”

I couldn't explain why I believed it. Perhaps it was the way she'd left that morning, carrying no handbag and wearing shoes unsuitable for a long walk. Perhaps it was the tremor in her hand when she saw the key. Or perhaps I was beginning to understand that the people closest to me had been making decisions about my life for years.

We drove home without turning on the radio.

When we arrived, my mother's coat hung on the hook beside the door. Her shoes were placed neatly beneath it. From the kitchen came the smell of cinnamon and warm apples.

She was baking.

The sight unsettled me more than it should have. My mother baked when she wanted to comfort someone, and she baked when she wanted to avoid a difficult conversation. Sometimes she did both at once.

She stood at the counter with a mixing bowl, stirring batter with a wooden spoon.

“You're back,” she said.

“Where did you go this morning?” I asked.

“To the pharmacy.”

“Which one?”

She stopped stirring.

“Why are you asking me that?”

“Because you said you were going for a walk.”

My mother set the spoon down.

“Mara, I'm too tired for this.”

“Someone reopened Dad's storage locker six months ago using my name.”

The color drained from her face.

Daniel stepped forward. “We found the record.”

My mother gripped the edge of the counter.

“Did you go inside?”

“The unit was empty,” I said. “But someone left a message.”

I took the brass key from my pocket and placed it beside the mixing bowl.

“Ask your mother.”

She stared at the key.

Then, very slowly, she sat down.

“I was hoping you wouldn't find that place,” she whispered.

“Did you use my name?”

“No.”

“Do you know who did?”

She looked toward the staircase, then toward the back door.

“I know who had the opportunity.”

“Who?”

My mother swallowed.

“Your father wasn't the only person who kept secrets in this family.”

Before I could respond, Lily appeared in the kitchen doorway.
