\nSarah pulled Leo down first.
\nI slid beside them as Ruiz moved toward the locked door.
\nThe evidence technician, a man named Franklin, reached beneath his desk and pressed the manual-release switch.
\nNothing happened.
\n\u201cThe emergency lock has been disabled,\u201d he said.
\nA red light appeared above the door.
\nSECURITY CONTAINMENT ACTIVE.
\n\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d I asked.
\n\u201cSomeone activated the evidence-room lockdown from central command.\u201d
\nFootsteps approached outside.
\nMore than one person.
\nRuiz aimed his gun toward the dark glass.

\nNot Daniel Ruiz.
\nDavid Rourke.
\nA man in a dark police uniform appeared behind the glass.

\nRuiz looked toward me.
\n\u201cRourke supervised the identity-theft unit when Marcus Kane worked with me.\u201d
\n\u201cKane was his officer?\u201d
\n\u201cHe signed every order that moved Kane away from investigations involving Thomas.\u201d
\nRourke\u2019s voice returned.
\n\u201cMr. Vance, Detective Ruiz has become emotionally unstable. Move your family away from him.\u201d
\nI remained under the table.

\n\u201cThat ledger was written by criminals.\u201d

Ruiz moved toward the intercom.

\n\u201cPlace your weapon down.\u201d

\nRourke\u2019s expression changed when Ruiz used his first name.
\n\u201cYou always were impatient.\u201d
\n\u201cAnd you always arrived before evidence disappeared.\u201d
\nThe two officers behind Rourke exchanged a glance.
\nThey had not expected that answer.
\nRuiz continued.
\n\u201cAsk him why Kane\u2019s first arrest warrant was canceled.\u201d
\nRourke switched off the intercom.
\nFranklin crawled beneath the evidence table.

\nSarah took out her phone.
\n\u201cNo signal.\u201d
\n\u201cThe station\u2019s cellular blocker activated with the lockdown,\u201d Franklin said.
\n\u201cCan anything leave this room?\u201d I asked.
\n\u201cThe evidence cameras use a separate wired network.\u201d
\nI looked at the camera above the table.
\n\u201cAre they recording?\u201d
\n\u201cContinuously.\u201d
\n\u201cWho can access the recordings?\u201d
\n\u201cCentral command.\u201d
\n\u201cRourke.\u201d
\nFranklin nodded.
\n\u201cIf he controls the server, he can erase everything.\u201d
\nSarah removed the memory card from the small camera attached to Leo\u2019s backpack.
\nShe had bought it months earlier so he could record school projects.
\n\u201cIt has been recording since the house,\u201d she said.
\nRuiz looked at it.<\/p>\n

\u201cKeep it hidden.\u201d
\nRourke returned to the intercom.
\n\u201cThe station is being evacuated because of an electrical emergency. You have thirty seconds to cooperate.\u201d

\n\u201cIn secure holding.\u201d
\n\u201cShow me the camera feed.\u201d
\n\u201cThat is not your concern.\u201d
\n\u201cThey were working for you.\u201d
\nRourke smiled.
\n\u201cYou\u2019re repeating the accusations of a frightened civilian.\u201d
\n\u201cI\u2019m repeating the names in a ledger you were willing to attack a police station to retrieve.\u201d
\nRourke looked directly at me.
\n\u201cMr. Vance, give me the protection ledger. In exchange, I will ensure your son leaves safely.\u201d
\nSarah tightened her arms around Leo.
\n\u201cYou sound exactly like Chloe,\u201d I said.
\n\u201cWhat?\u201d
\n\u201cEveryone who wants to steal from me offers to return something that was already mine.\u201d
\nRourke\u2019s smile disappeared.
\nA metal sound came from beneath the table.
\nFranklin had opened the floor panel.
\n\u201cI found the mechanical cable,\u201d he whispered.
\n\u201cWait,\u201d Ruiz said.
\nOne of the officers outside moved toward the side of the door.
\nThe other raised his weapon.
\nRourke stepped backward.
\n\u201cHe is going to breach,\u201d Ruiz warned.
\nThe glass exploded inward.
\nSarah covered Leo\u2019s head.
\nRuiz fired once toward the ceiling light.
\nThe room went dark again.
\nFranklin pulled the mechanical cable.
\nA narrow service door opened behind a row of evidence shelves.
\n\u201cMove!\u201d
\nI grabbed the protection ledger.
\nSarah carried Leo through the opening.
\nFranklin followed.
\nRuiz entered last and pulled the service door closed.
\nGunshots struck the metal behind us.<\/p>\n

The passage led into a storage corridor beneath the station.
\nEmergency lights flashed every few seconds.
\nRuiz guided us toward the vehicle garage.
\n\u201cHow much of the ledger did they get?\u201d Sarah asked.
\n\u201cThe black box is still in the evidence room,\u201d I said. \u201cI only have the protection ledger.\u201d
\n\u201cThat is the one Rourke wants most.\u201d
\n\u201cWhy?\u201d
\n\u201cBecause Thomas documented every person he paid.\u201d
\nThe station intercom activated.
\n\u201cAttention all personnel. Detective Daniel Ruiz is armed and dangerous. He has taken three civilians hostage, including a minor child.\u201d
\nLeo stopped walking.
\n\u201cIs he talking about us?\u201d
\nSarah knelt.
\n\u201cHe is lying.\u201d
\n\u201cBut he\u2019s police.\u201d
\n\u201cA uniform does not make every word true.\u201d

\nWe continued down the corridor.
\nAt the next corner, an officer appeared with his weapon raised.
\n\u201cRuiz! Drop it!\u201d
\n\u201cHe is lying to you, Jackson.\u201d
\n\u201cPut the gun down.\u201d
\n\u201cRourke is named in the North Shore protection ledger.\u201d
\n\u201cI heard the alert. You took a family hostage.\u201d
\n\u201cLook at them.\u201d
\nThe officer looked at Sarah and Leo.
\nNeither was restrained.
\nI held the ledger against my chest.
\n\u201cWe are not hostages.\u201d
\n\u201cStep away from Ruiz.\u201d
\n\u201cHe rescued my son twice tonight.\u201d
\nThe officer\u2019s weapon lowered slightly.
\nRuiz removed his badge and slid it across the floor.
\n\u201cCall state police. Tell them Deputy Chief Rourke is destroying evidence connected to North Shore Equity.\u201d
\nThe officer looked at the shattered corridor door behind us.
\nThen another announcement sounded.
\n\u201cOfficer Jackson, detain Ruiz immediately.\u201d
\nRourke was watching through the hallway cameras.
\nJackson switched off his radio.
\n\u201cThe west stairwell leads to the public garage.\u201d
\n\u201cCome with us,\u201d Ruiz said.
\n\u201cI\u2019ll slow them down.\u201d
\n\u201cYou will be suspended.\u201d
\n\u201cIf that ledger is real, suspension is the smallest problem in this building.\u201d
\nJackson unlocked the stairwell.
\nWe climbed two flights.
\nWhen we reached the garage, Sarah\u2019s phone regained service.
\nShe immediately uploaded Leo\u2019s camera recording to three cloud accounts and sent it to her attorney.
\nI photographed every page of the protection ledger.
\nRuiz contacted the Illinois State Police.
\nBefore he could finish, the garage doors began closing.
\nRourke had found us.
\nA black police SUV accelerated from the opposite side.

\nRuiz looked at Sarah\u2019s backpack camera.

\nHis face changed.
\nSarah raised her phone.

\nRourke reached toward his weapon.
\nRuiz aimed first.

\nFor several seconds, nobody moved.
\nThen sirens approached from outside the garage.
\nState police.
\nRourke looked toward the closing doors.
\nHe had lost control of the station, but he had not lost every escape route.
\nHe pressed a device attached to his belt.
\nThe black police SUV exploded.
\nThe force threw me against the pillar.
\nSmoke filled the garage.
\nRuiz dragged Sarah and Leo behind a concrete barrier.
\nRourke disappeared through a maintenance exit.
\nState officers entered moments later.
\nThey secured the station, collected Sarah\u2019s recording, and placed the officers who had followed Rourke under investigation.
\nThe power returned twelve minutes later.
\nThe evidence room had been emptied.
\nThe black metal box was gone.
\nSo were the hard drives, passports, cash, and three financial ledgers.
\nOnly the protection ledger remained because I had carried it out.
\n\u201cWhat about Thomas and Kane?\u201d I asked.
\nState police checked the holding cells.
\nBoth were empty.
\nRourke had released them during the blackout.
\nMelissa\u2019s cell was also empty.

\nShe leaned toward the glass.
\n\u201cDestroying every person named in that ledger.\u201d
\nMy phone vibrated.
\nA citywide emergency alert appeared.
\nWANTED FOR ARMED KIDNAPPING, ARSON, FINANCIAL FRAUD, AND CHILD ENDANGERMENT.
\nThe photograph beneath it was mine.
\nSarah\u2019s picture appeared beside it.
\nA third image showed Ruiz.
\nRourke had entered our names into the police system before fleeing.
\nThe alert claimed that Sarah and I had abducted Leo after setting fire to my apartment.
\nIt instructed officers to remove Leo from our custody immediately.
\nThe state police commander read the alert.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is false,\u201d I said.
\n\u201cWe know.\u201d
\n\u201cDoes everyone else?\u201d
\nBefore he could answer, dozens of police radios activated throughout the station.
\nUnits across Chicago had received our photographs, vehicle description, and Sarah\u2019s home address.
\nRourke had not only escaped.
\nHe had turned the entire city\u2019s police network against us.
\nThen Sarah\u2019s attorney called.
\n\u201cDo not return home,\u201d she warned. \u201cA second emergency guardianship order was just entered.\u201d
\n\u201cThe first one was canceled.\u201d
\n\u201cThis one names a different guardian.\u201d
\n\u201cWho?\u201d
\nShe read the document.
\nTemporary guardian: Deputy Chief David Rourke.
\nThe order authorized him to take immediate custody of Leo for his protection.
\n\u201cThat cannot be legal.\u201d
\n\u201cIt carries the judge\u2019s electronic signature.\u201d
\n\u201cWhich judge?\u201d
\nShe said the name.
\nI opened the protection ledger.
\nThe same judge appeared on the final page beside a payment of thirty thousand dollars.
\nOutside the station, officers surrounded our vehicle.
\nTheir weapons were raised.
\nA loudspeaker ordered Sarah and me to surrender the child.
\nRuiz looked through the garage window.
\n\u201cThose officers have not received the state investigation update.\u201d
\n\u201cWhat do we do?\u201d
\n\u201cWe stay inside until we can prove the alert is false.\u201d
\nThen every door in the station unlocked at once.
\nThe state commander\u2019s radio announced that authority over the building had been transferred to Deputy Chief Rourke under an emergency judicial order.
\nRourke\u2019s voice came through the loudspeaker.
\n\u201cEthan Vance, send Leo outside now, or every person protecting you will be arrested.\u201d
\nChloe watched from her cell.
\nHer smile widened.
\n\u201cYou should have given me the apartment,\u201d she whispered.
\nThe lights went out again.
