This time, the message included a revised outline for the public-space project, along with a preliminary budget and a clearer division of responsibilities. The group had taken her earlier questions seriously. It proposed compensation for the concept phase, defined the number of revisions included in the initial fee, and acknowledged that additional work would require a separate agreement.

Evelyn read the document carefully before responding. The revised terms were an improvement, but several questions remained. The proposed schedule still depended on funding approval, and the group expected participating firms to reserve staff capacity before all of the construction details were finalized. The arrangement might be workable, but only if the contract clearly addressed delays, cancellation, and payment for completed work.

She forwarded the document to Miriam and asked for a review of the financial implications. She also consulted a lawyer who regularly advised her firm on professional agreements. Neither adviser told her to reject the opportunity outright. Both recommended that she avoid committing resources until the remaining terms were clarified.

For Evelyn, that was enough to establish the next step. She replied to the design group with a concise list of questions and suggested a meeting to resolve them. She did not apologize for being careful, and she did not pretend that enthusiasm required immediate agreement.

When she told Daniel about the revised proposal, he listened while she described the compensation structure and the remaining uncertainties.

“It sounds more promising,” he said.

“It is. But it still needs work.”

“Are you worried they'll give the project to someone else if you ask too many questions?”

“I'm aware that they might choose another firm. But accepting unclear terms just to keep the opportunity would be a poor business decision.”

Daniel nodded. “That makes sense.”

Evelyn noticed that he did not suggest that she should take the risk because the project might generate more income. He did not mention the home-purchase folder or speculate about what a larger contract could mean for their household. He understood that the firm’s financial decisions belonged to her professional judgment.

The following afternoon, she met with Miriam to review the revised budget. They calculated the likely cost of the concept phase, including staff hours, specialist input, and administrative expenses. They also considered what would happen if the larger project were delayed or canceled. Miriam helped Evelyn identify the minimum payment terms necessary to keep the work financially responsible.

“You can afford to explore this,” Miriam said, “but you shouldn't finance the entire planning process yourself. The fee needs to cover the work you're being asked to do.”

Evelyn agreed. She revised her notes and prepared a counterproposal that limited the initial scope, set a clear payment schedule, and made any additional services subject to written approval. It was not an aggressive demand. It was a reasonable structure that allowed both sides to understand their obligations.

At the next meeting, the design group reviewed her proposal. One representative asked whether Evelyn could begin a portion of the concept work before the funding decision was final. She explained that she could reserve time after the initial agreement was signed and the first payment received, but she could not ask her team to undertake open-ended work without compensation.

The representatives discussed the point among themselves. After a short pause, they agreed to take the revised terms to their internal team. No contract was signed that day, but the conversation ended constructively.

Evelyn left the meeting feeling cautiously optimistic. She had not secured the project, but she had maintained the standards that protected her firm. She had also discovered that asking direct questions did not necessarily drive good clients away. Sometimes it helped establish whether the working relationship could succeed.

That evening, Daniel asked how the discussion had gone. Evelyn explained that the group was reviewing her counterproposal and that she would wait for its response before allocating staff time.

“I'm proud of you,” he said.

She smiled, appreciating the sentiment. “Thank you.”

He hesitated, then added, “I know that sounds simple, but I mean that you didn't let the excitement make the decision for you.”

Evelyn considered him. “I've always tried to do that at work.”

“I know. I just didn't always respect how important it was.”

The admission was quiet, without the defensive edge that had characterized some of their earlier conversations. Evelyn did not turn it into a discussion of the past, but she recognized the honesty in it.

The next morning, the group sent a brief acknowledgment confirming that it was reviewing the terms. Evelyn saved the message in the project file and returned to the cultural center drawings. She had other work to do, and she would not let the uncertain partnership consume her attention before it became a real commitment.

At home, Daniel was dealing with a different decision. His Northline adviser had sent a reminder about the next scheduled review of his repayment plan. Daniel gathered his statements and checked that his payment history was complete. The balance had continued to decrease, although he still had obligations to meet. He could not eliminate them through optimism or a single large payment without undermining his reserve.

He told Evelyn that he intended to keep following the existing plan rather than attempting to accelerate it at the expense of his emergency savings. She agreed that consistency mattered more than appearances.

“I used to think getting rid of the debt as quickly as possible would prove I'd fixed everything,” Daniel admitted. “Now I think sticking to a plan I can sustain is more useful.”

“It is,” Evelyn replied. “Provided you keep reviewing it honestly.”

He showed her the schedule, and they confirmed that the next payment fit his budget. Afterward, he returned the papers to his folder without waiting for praise.

Their financial situation was not perfect. The repayment plan continued, the home purchase remained a possibility rather than a commitment, and Evelyn's potential partnership had not yet become a contract. But the uncertainty was now visible and manageable. Neither of them had to disguise it to preserve an image.

Later that weekend, they took a walk through a neighborhood they both liked. They passed several houses with small gardens and front porches, and Daniel mentioned that he could imagine living in a place like that someday. Evelyn agreed that the neighborhood had appeal, but neither suggested that they should begin making offers.

“We can keep looking,” she said. “Looking doesn't mean committing.”

“Right,” Daniel replied. “We can learn what we like without turning it into a deadline.”

They continued walking. Evelyn felt a quiet satisfaction in being able to discuss a future home without the conversation becoming a negotiation over trust. The possibility could remain open without either of them needing to use it as proof of anything.

When they returned home, the blue folder stayed in the cabinet. Evelyn had work to finish, and Daniel had his own budget to review. Their lives were moving forward, not because every question had been answered, but because they were learning to make decisions at the speed that honest information allowed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 28: A Family Gathering Reveals Whether Daniel Can Stand by the Truth Without Asking Evelyn to Protect His Image

Three days after the counseling session, the regional design group contacted Evelyn again.
