The request surprised her. Since the dinner at Patricia’s house, Claire had treated Evelyn’s refusal to pay for the vacation as a personal insult. Now she wanted a private conversation.

Evelyn agreed to meet her at a café near the office. She arrived early, chose a table beside the window, and ordered tea. Outside, the pavement still glistened from the previous night's rain. She watched people hurry past with their collars raised and tried to imagine what Claire might say that she had not already heard.

Claire arrived ten minutes late. She wore sunglasses despite the gray sky and kept her handbag on her lap after sitting down. For a moment, neither woman spoke. The barista placed a cup in front of Claire, and she thanked him without looking up.

“I owe you an apology,” Claire said at last.

Evelyn waited.

“I shouldn't have spoken to you the way I did at dinner. I was upset about the trip, and I thought you were punishing everyone because Daniel had made a mistake.”

“What do you think now?”

Claire removed her sunglasses and folded them beside the cup. “I think he was hiding more than I realized.”

Evelyn felt cautious relief, but she did not want an apology to replace the facts. “What did you know before the card was used?”

Claire looked toward the window. “Daniel told me he had a way to pay for the vacation. He said you were probably going to cover it as a gift to Mom.”

“Did he say I'd agreed?”

“Not in those exact words.”

“Did you ask me?”

“No.”

“Did you know he had taken the card from my handbag?”

Claire's fingers tightened around the cup. “He told me he had your card details. I assumed he'd asked you.”

“You wrote a note saying I shouldn't be told until everything was settled.”

Claire went still. Evelyn had brought a photograph of the note, not to embarrass her but because she wanted the conversation to remain grounded in what had happened. She placed the image on the table.

Claire stared at it. “I wrote that because Daniel said you were busy and he'd talk to you after he confirmed the reservations.”

“You knew he hadn't spoken to me.”

“I knew he hadn't told you everything. I didn't understand that he had taken the physical card without asking.”

Evelyn studied her face. Claire seemed ashamed, but shame could come from being exposed as easily as from recognizing harm. Evelyn needed to know whether Claire was prepared to tell the truth even if it made her brother look worse.

“Did you know about his debts?” she asked.

“Not the full amount. He told me he'd borrowed some money and was trying to consolidate it. He said things were under control.”

“Did he ask you for money?”

Claire nodded. “A few months ago. I lent him some, and he paid back part of it. I thought the rest would come later.”

“Was that one of the transfers from our joint account?”

“No. He repaid me from his own account, as far as I know.”

Evelyn wrote down the detail, careful not to treat Claire's assumption as proof. “Did you know he was moving money from our savings?”

“No.”

“Did Patricia?”

Claire shook her head. “Mom knew Daniel was struggling, but she thought he was behind on a few bills. She didn't know he was taking money from your accounts.”

Evelyn leaned back. Some of Claire's answers eased one concern, but others deepened another. Claire had not necessarily known the full extent of the deception, yet she had accepted Daniel's version without asking whether Evelyn had consented. Her loyalty had been automatic.

“Why did you want to speak to me?” Evelyn asked.

Claire reached into her handbag and took out a folded sheet of paper. “Because Daniel called me last night. He said you were asking for all his statements and that you might contact a lawyer. He was furious. He told me I needed to help convince you to calm down.”

“What did you say?”

“I told him I wasn't getting involved.”

Evelyn looked at the paper Claire had placed between them. It was a printed message from Daniel, sent late the previous evening. He had written that Evelyn was making the situation impossible and that the family would be left dealing with the consequences if she refused to cooperate.

“I thought you should see it,” Claire said. “I don't want to be used to pressure you.”

Evelyn read the message and returned it. “Thank you for showing me. But I need you to understand something. I won't ask you to take sides in every argument between Daniel and me. I am asking you not to help him conceal decisions that affect me.”

Claire nodded. Her eyes were red around the edges, though she did not cry. “I understand.”

“Do you?”

“I think I do. I wanted the trip. I wanted Mom to have something to look forward to. Daniel made it sound as though you were already going to pay, and I accepted that because it was convenient.”

The admission was more honest than Evelyn expected. Claire was not innocent of the pressure she had helped create, but she seemed willing to acknowledge her part in it.

“Did Daniel tell you why he wanted to go on the trip himself?” Evelyn asked.

“He said he needed a break. He'd been anxious about money for months, and he thought getting away would help him think clearly.”

“Did he say anything about the Northline agreement?”

Claire frowned. “Only that he was meeting someone who could help him consolidate his debt. He didn't mention your name.”

Evelyn finished her tea. She had no desire to turn the conversation into an interrogation, but she needed to know whether there were other people who might be involved in the finances.

“Has Daniel ever asked you to sign anything for him?”

“No.”

“Has he asked you to open an account or receive transfers?”

Claire shook her head firmly. “No. Why?”

“I found a few transactions I don't recognize. I'm trying to understand where the money went.”

Claire looked genuinely alarmed. “Do you think he was using me?”

“I don't know. I'm not going to accuse him without evidence.”

They sat quietly for a moment. Then Claire asked whether Evelyn thought the marriage was over.

Evelyn looked at her cup. “I don't know yet. I know I can't continue as though this didn't happen.”

Claire nodded, accepting the answer without trying to persuade her otherwise.

Before they parted, Claire offered to tell Patricia that the vacation had been canceled because Daniel had used the card without permission. Evelyn declined the offer to stage another family discussion, but asked Claire not to repeat any details beyond what she knew firsthand.

“I don't want another argument about what everyone thinks happened,” Evelyn said. “I want the facts to remain clear.”

When Evelyn returned to her office, she found a missed call from Daniel. She called him back during a break between meetings.

“Claire says you spoke to her,” he said immediately.

“She asked to talk.”

“You've got my family involved now.”

“She was already involved when she helped plan the vacation.”

Daniel exhaled sharply. “She told me she wasn't going to get involved. Now she's giving you messages.”

“She showed me a message you sent her.”

“Because I was upset. I wanted her to help.”

“Help you do what?”

“Help you understand that you're making this bigger than it needs to be.”

Evelyn closed her eyes briefly. Even after Claire's admission, Daniel was still trying to recruit someone else to manage her reaction instead of addressing the underlying problem.

“I've asked you for financial records,” she said. “That's not a punishment.”

“You're talking to people behind my back.”

“You spoke to Northline about my financial position without my consent. You discussed the vacation with your family before telling me. I am allowed to speak to someone who has information about what happened.”

Daniel went quiet. When he spoke again, his voice was lower.

“I don't know how to fix this if you don't trust me.”

“Start by telling the truth before someone else has to discover it.”

He ended the call without saying goodbye.

That evening, Evelyn checked the joint account again. No new transfer had been scheduled, but the balance remained lower than it should have been. She downloaded the latest statement and saved it. Then she opened a fresh document and listed every question still unanswered: the complete debt total, the purpose of each transfer, the status of the Northline proposal, and whether any account or asset had been pledged as security.

The list was longer than she wanted. It was also finite.

At nine, Daniel came into the living room and sat at the far end of the sofa. He looked tired and uncertain.

“Claire told me what she said,” he began.

Evelyn put down her book. “All right.”

“She shouldn't have shown you my message.”

“Perhaps you shouldn't have sent it.”

He gave a humorless laugh. “You have an answer for everything.”

“No. I have questions you still haven't answered.”

For a moment, he seemed ready to leave. Instead, he stayed seated and stared at his hands.

“I didn't mean for this to become a family issue,” he said.

“It became one when you told your family we had agreed to pay for a trip I knew nothing about.”

He nodded faintly. “I understand that now.”

Evelyn wanted to believe him, but she had heard similar promises before. She told him that she would review the financial records when he provided them, but she would not negotiate through Claire or Patricia, and she would not agree to any loan or guarantee under pressure.

Daniel looked at her with a mixture of hurt and resentment. “So everything is going to be on your terms.”

“No. It is going to require both of us to agree.”

He had no immediate response. The distinction seemed to unsettle him more than any accusation.

Later, Evelyn received a brief message from Claire: I've told Mom what I know. I'm sorry I didn't ask you before assuming.

Evelyn replied that she appreciated the honesty. She did not promise that everything was forgiven. An apology could be a beginning, but it could not rewrite the choices that had already been made.

Before bed, she placed the note from Claire, Daniel's message, and the bank statements in separate folders. The documents told different parts of the same story: a husband in financial trouble, a family eager for a vacation, and a wife whose consent had been treated as an inconvenience.

What Evelyn still did not know was whether Daniel's debt could be contained without threatening their home or her business. Until she knew that, she could not decide what kind of future was possible.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Missing Statements Force Daniel to Choose Between a Difficult Confession and Another Attempt to Control the Story

On Friday morning, Evelyn woke to a message from Claire asking whether they could talk without Daniel present.
