Evelyn was already dressed when Daniel came downstairs, carrying his phone and looking as though he had slept badly. She placed Mark Ellison’s email on the kitchen table between them.

“Who told Northline I might provide supporting funds?”

Daniel stopped beside his chair. His eyes moved over the printed message, then toward the coffee machine. “I was going to explain that.”

“You promised to give me the complete figures by Friday. This is Thursday, and someone is already asking whether I agreed to support your financial arrangement.”

He pulled out the chair but didn't sit. “It's a standard question. They need to know what resources might be available.”

“What resources did you tell them I would make available?”

“Nothing specific.”

“Did you tell them I might guarantee your debt?”

“No.” He paused. “Not exactly.”

Evelyn waited. The rain ticked against the glass, filling the silence that followed his answer. Daniel finally sat down and explained that Northline had suggested consolidating several debts into a single repayment plan. The proposed terms depended partly on his income and partly on whether he could demonstrate that his household expenses were manageable. During an earlier conversation, he had mentioned Evelyn’s business and the fact that they owned their home together.

“I told Mark you were financially stable,” Daniel said. “I didn't promise him anything.”

“But you let him believe I might be involved.”

“I said we shared a household. I thought that was relevant.”

“It is relevant if you're discussing household expenses. It isn't permission to use my income as reassurance for a loan.”

He rubbed his forehead. “I didn't sign anything.”

“Then don't sign anything until we understand exactly what it says.”

Daniel looked at the email again. “The appointment is at eleven. I was hoping to get the agreement settled today.”

“You can attend the meeting without signing. Tell Mark you need more time.”

“He won't be pleased.”

“That isn't a reason to sign something you haven't fully reviewed.”

He stood, collected his phone, and paced toward the hall. Evelyn watched him struggle between the desire to solve the problem quickly and the fear that any delay would expose how little control he had over it. She understood the impulse. What she could no longer accept was his attempt to make speed more important than consent.

“I'll ask for another copy,” he said.

“Ask for every document they intend you to sign. I want a copy of anything that mentions me or our shared property.”

Daniel's shoulders tightened. “You're making this sound like a legal battle.”

“I'm making sure nobody commits me to something I haven't agreed to.”

He left shortly before nine. Evelyn called Mark Ellison directly using the number in his email. She introduced herself, explained that she had received his message, and asked him to clarify the proposed arrangement.

Mark's voice was courteous, with the measured calm of someone accustomed to discussing uncomfortable subjects. He confirmed that Daniel had approached Northline seeking help with several outstanding debts. The company had prepared a draft consolidation proposal, but no final agreement had been executed.

“Mr. Hart mentioned that his wife might be willing to contribute toward the repayment plan,” Mark said. “We wanted to confirm that directly rather than make assumptions.”

“He was mistaken if he gave you that impression. I have not agreed to contribute, guarantee, or secure any debt.”

“I understand. I'll record that in the file.”

“Please also confirm that my name won't be included as a guarantor or co-borrower without my explicit written authorization.”

“Of course.”

Evelyn asked for copies of the draft proposal and any documents referring to her. Mark said he would send what he was permitted to disclose after checking the file. He did not sound defensive, but neither did he promise that every requested document would arrive immediately.

After the call, Evelyn wrote a brief record of the conversation and saved it beside the bank statements. She felt no satisfaction in having to protect herself this way. She wanted Daniel to solve his financial problems honestly, not become an adversary whose every statement required verification.

At eleven twenty, Daniel sent her a message: The meeting is taking longer than expected. I'll explain when I get home.

She replied that she wanted the documents, not merely an explanation.

Nearly an hour passed before Mark’s email arrived. It contained a draft repayment proposal, a summary of Daniel’s declared debts, and a list of assets and resources he had reported. The house was described as jointly owned, and Evelyn’s business was mentioned in a section concerning household income. A note stated that the household might have access to additional funds through a spouse.

The wording did not make Evelyn legally responsible for Daniel’s debts, but it showed how he had framed their circumstances. He had presented her financial stability as part of the background supporting his application, despite having no permission to involve her.

She printed the documents and read them carefully. Several balances matched the amounts in the papers Daniel had left at home. Others were new to her. The total outstanding debt was considerably higher than the handwritten estimate he had shown her, although she could not tell whether every figure was current.

At the bottom of the summary, she found a note concerning a proposed contribution from household resources. The amount was not finalized. Beside it, someone had typed: “Subject to spouse confirmation.”

Evelyn closed the folder.

When Daniel arrived home that afternoon, she was waiting at the dining table. He placed his briefcase beside the wall and glanced at the documents spread before her.

“Mark sent you everything?”

“He sent the draft. I haven't agreed to anything.”

“I didn't ask you to.”

“You told him I might contribute.”

“I told him it was possible we could discuss it.”

“That is not the same as asking me.”

Daniel pulled out a chair. He looked exhausted, and for a moment she wondered whether he had spent the morning arguing with Northline or confronting the consequences of his own omissions.

“I was trying to find a way out,” he said. “The interest payments were getting out of hand. I thought if I could consolidate everything, I'd have one manageable payment and a chance to catch up.”

“Why didn't you tell me before the debt reached this point?”

He stared at his hands. “At first, I thought I could handle it. Then I was behind on one account, so I used another to cover it. After that, every month became a problem.”

“And the money from our joint savings?”

“Some went toward payments. Some covered things I hadn't planned for.”

“Which things?”

He gave her a list of expenses, including repairs to his car, an overdue personal loan, and payments he had made after borrowing from a friend. The explanations were plausible, but the records were incomplete. Evelyn wrote them down without agreeing that the money had been used appropriately.

“What about the vacation?” she asked.

Daniel looked up. “I wanted to give my mother and Claire something good. I knew I couldn't afford it comfortably, but I thought I could manage the cost if the other arrangement went through.”

“So you spent money you didn't have while trying to arrange a loan to cover money you already owed.”

He winced. “When you say it like that, it sounds worse.”

“It is worse. You're still trying to solve one debt by creating another obligation.”

He leaned forward, his elbows on the table. “I know I've made mistakes. I need some time to put everything right.”

“You can have time to organize the information. You cannot assume I'll pay for it.”

Daniel looked at her as though he wanted to argue, but the documents between them made the old accusation—that she was overreacting—harder to sustain.

“What do you want me to do?” he asked.

“First, produce complete statements for every debt and account you've used. Second, stop moving money out of the shared accounts without discussing it. Third, don't sign Northline's agreement until you've received independent advice.”

“And after that?”

“After that, we decide what can be repaired based on facts rather than promises.”

He sat quietly for several seconds. Then he nodded, slowly and reluctantly.

Evelyn gathered the documents into a folder. She had not decided whether their marriage could survive this. She had decided that survival could not depend on her pretending the problem was smaller than it was.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: A Conversation With Claire Reveals That Daniel’s Secret Was Protected by More Than One Person

Thursday morning arrived with a thin layer of rain against the windows.
