\nDerek stared at the photograph from the bank.

\nThe same wedding ring.
\nThe same watch now resting on the table.
\nHe did not deny that he was the man in the picture.

\nRobert stepped away from his son.
\nChloe watched through the glass wall of the adjoining interview room.

\nI opened the camera.
\nA man wearing a gray maintenance uniform stood outside my apartment.
\nHis cap covered most of his face.
\nA rectangular toolbox rested beside his feet.
\nHe looked directly into the camera.
\nThen he reached upward.
\nThe video disappeared.
\nCAMERA OFFLINE.
\n\u201cSomeone is inside my apartment,\u201d I said.
\nRuiz contacted dispatch.
\nThe building manager ordered security to the ninth floor.
\nI called Mrs. Patel.
\nShe answered in a whisper.
\n\u201cThere\u2019s a man inside your apartment.\u201d
\n\u201cLock your door.\u201d

\nThe man walked toward the elevator.
\nThen the fire alarm lights illuminated the hallway, and he turned his head.
\nMrs. Patel gasped.
\n\u201cI know him.\u201d
\n\u201cWho?\u201d
\nBefore she could answer, something struck her door.
\nShe screamed and dropped the phone.
\nThe line remained connected.
\nI heard footsteps, breaking glass, and the roar of fire spreading through the apartment where my son slept.
\nThen a man\u2019s voice spoke close to Mrs. Patel\u2019s fallen phone.
\n\u201cTell Ethan the locked door only made us change the plan.\u201d
\nThe call ended.
