\nMom and Dad entered the lobby before Chloe could react.

\nChloe stepped toward us.

\nSusan spoke quietly.
\n\u201cThat was only what we paid. If she charged everyone the same amount, it could be more than thirty thousand dollars.\u201d
\nThe officer asked Chloe if she would voluntarily show him the account receiving the payments.
\n\u201cNo.\u201d
\n\u201cWere the payments deposited into an account under your name?\u201d
\n\u201cI want a lawyer.\u201d
\nMom grabbed my arm.
\n\u201cLook what you\u2019re doing to this family.\u201d
\nI pulled away.
\n\u201cNo, look what Chloe did.\u201d

\n\u201cWhy are you more worried about protecting her than protecting me?\u201d
