For several minutes, he seemed unable to decide where to begin. He looked older than Daniel remembered, not simply because of the gray in his hair or the bruising along his cheek, but because he no longer carried himself like a man who believed he could manage every difficulty alone.

“I need to tell you what happened after I left Clara’s house,” Walter said. “But before I do, there is something you need to understand about Evelyn. Everything I did was shaped by what I believed I had promised her. That doesn’t mean I made the right choices.”

Daniel kept his gaze on the path ahead. “Then start with what actually happened. Not what you believed. Not what you thought was best for us. Tell me what you saw and what you did.”

Walter nodded slowly. “That is fair.”

He explained that when he first traveled to the coast, he had intended to retrieve the original record Clara had preserved. He believed the document would establish what had happened when Evelyn signed the trust agreement and identify the person who had pressured her. He had expected a difficult conversation, perhaps a refusal from Clara, but not the arrival of Thomas Reed.

Reed had appeared shortly after Walter arrived at Clara’s boarding house. He claimed he had been hired to review the trust’s history and determine whether the old agreement could be challenged. At first, Walter had assumed Reed was merely an investigator looking for a profitable case. But when Reed mentioned details that had never appeared in public records, Walter realized someone had given him access to information that should have remained protected.

“Did he threaten you?” Daniel asked.

“Not directly. That was what made it difficult. He spoke politely. He said the family had suffered enough and that the safest thing would be to let the documents remain where they were. He suggested that if the original record disappeared, everyone could move on.”

“And you believed him?”

“No. But I believed he had found someone who wanted the record destroyed.”

Walter had challenged Reed about his connection to the company associated with Andrew Vale. Reed denied acting on behalf of Andrew’s father, Richard, but he refused to identify the person who had commissioned his review. Walter told him the evidence would be preserved and examined by independent investigators.

Reed had then asked a question that changed the conversation.

He wanted to know whether Jonathan had been told about the separate statement Evelyn had signed.

Walter had not answered. He had not needed to. Reed’s expression had shown that the existence of the statement was the information he had been sent to confirm.

“When he left, I knew I couldn’t hand the record over to Clara and simply walk away,” Walter continued. “Someone had already tried to access her storage account. Someone knew about Jonathan. And someone was looking for a document that could connect the original agreement to the people who had benefited from it.”

“So you disappeared again,” Daniel said.

“I did.”

“You could have called the police.”

“I should have.”

“You could have called me.”

Walter closed his eyes briefly. “Yes.”

Daniel turned toward him. “You keep saying you were protecting us. But you left us to imagine the worst. You left Claire wondering whether she had somehow driven you away. You left the children believing their grandfather might never return. You gave us no way to help you, and then you expected us to understand when the truth came out.”

“I didn’t expect forgiveness.”

“You still expected us to accept your reasons.”

Walter had no answer. His hands tightened around the handle of his walking stick, then slowly relaxed.

For the first time, Daniel could see that his father was not preparing another defense. He was allowing the accusation to stand.

Walter explained that after leaving Clara’s house, he had moved between small towns, using public transport and avoiding places where he might be recognized. He had intended to draw Reed’s attention away from Clara while arranging for the original record to be delivered securely to the police. But his injured arm and the uncertainty surrounding the investigation had slowed him down.

He had gone to the railway building and left the key and notebook where the authorities might find them. The notebook was a guide to the records he had collected, not a complete account of the past. He had deliberately avoided writing conclusions beside entries that had not been independently verified.

“I thought if I left enough information for the investigators, they could continue without me,” Walter said. “I didn’t understand that the same people who wanted the record could use my disappearance to create confusion.”

Daniel looked down at his hands. “Why didn’t you come home when you realized that?”

“Because I still had Clara’s final evidence in mind. She had agreed to release it only when Jonathan had been informed of the circumstances and could decide for himself what to do. I was afraid that if I returned before the record was secured, the family would become the easiest way to reach it.”

“Clara made that decision for a reason. Why couldn’t you trust her to keep it safe?”

Walter stared at the gravel. “Because I had spent so long believing that every danger was mine to carry. I mistook being responsible for being indispensable.”

The words settled between them. Daniel had spent years thinking his father’s silence meant that he considered everyone else incapable of understanding. Perhaps part of that had been true. But he could also see the fear beneath it, and the way fear had gradually become a habit.

Neither explanation made the disappearance harmless.

After a while, Walter reached into his coat and removed a folded sheet of paper. It was not an original legal document, only a handwritten list of questions he had intended to ask Clara before Reed arrived. Several were crossed out. One remained circled.

Who was present when Evelyn made her final decision?

“Clara knows the answer,” Walter said. “Or she knows where to find the evidence. She has been waiting for Jonathan to decide whether he wants to see it.”

Daniel took the paper but did not unfold it further.

“Then we let Jonathan decide,” he said. “We don’t pressure him because we’re impatient. We don’t tell him he owes Evelyn anything. And we don’t decide that finding the truth means he has to accept the property.”

“That is what I should have done from the beginning.”

“Yes.”

Walter looked toward the station. “Will you tell Claire I’m sorry?”

“You can tell her yourself.”

The answer was firm, but it was not a rejection. Daniel stood and offered his father an arm to help him rise. Walter hesitated before accepting it, and Daniel wondered how many years of pride had taught them both to mistake help for weakness.

Detective Harris approached after receiving a signal from the officer watching nearby. Walter agreed to give a formal statement and answer questions about Reed, the missing record, and the places he had visited. He also agreed not to leave the area without notifying the investigators.

Before they separated, Daniel turned back.

“One more thing,” he said. “When you come home, you’re going to have to face the children’s questions. You’re going to have to tell Claire what happened. And you’re going to have to accept that things won’t return to how they were.”

Walter’s eyes filled with tears. “I understand.”

“No, Dad. You’re beginning to understand.”

Daniel left him with Detective Harris and walked toward the road, carrying neither the old notebook nor the evidence. For once, he was not being asked to keep a secret. He was simply being asked to give another person the chance to speak.

And that, Daniel realized, was where their family’s repair had to begin.

Click here to continue reading: PART 30: Clara Released the Record That Could No Longer Be Buried

Walter sat beside Daniel on the damp garden bench, his walking stick resting between his knees.
