A narrow path led to a side entrance, where Detective Harris waited with two officers and a locksmith. The caretaker, a thin man named Mr. Bellamy, stood beneath the overhang, turning his cap in his hands.

“I’ve worked around here thirty years,” Bellamy told them. “Never thought anything of that cabinet. It was always locked. People assumed the railway company had left old tools inside.”

“Did you see anyone using it recently?” Harris asked.

Bellamy hesitated. “A man came twice last week. Older, gray hair. Walked carefully, like his knee hurt. I thought he was a former employee.”

Daniel’s face tightened. “Did he look like my father?”

“I can’t be certain. I saw him from a distance. But he carried a dark walking stick, and he stopped to look at the tracks before he went inside.”

Walter had owned a walking stick for years, although Daniel had rarely seen him use it. The possibility that he had been injured during his disappearance made Daniel feel suddenly cold.

The locksmith opened the side door. Inside, the building smelled of wet wood, rust, and dust. A narrow passage led to a storage room where obsolete timetables hung on the wall. The cabinet stood beneath a broken clock. Its lock had been opened and closed so many times that the metal around the keyhole had worn smooth.

Harris instructed everyone to remain clear while the forensic officer examined the cabinet. The key marked seventeen fit the lock, but the door did not open immediately. Something inside had been wedged against it.

When the cabinet finally swung forward, a folded sheet of brown paper slid onto the floor.

Daniel reached instinctively, then stopped when Harris raised a hand. The officer photographed the paper before allowing the forensic examiner to lift it. Inside was a small notebook, several train tickets, and a sealed envelope bearing no name.

The notebook contained dates, short descriptions, and a list of addresses. Some entries matched places they had already investigated. Others referred to a meeting room at Bellweather Savings Bank and a property office that had closed decades earlier.

One line had been written more heavily than the rest:

The record is only useful if someone is willing to testify to what it means.

Claire read it twice. “Walter wrote that?”

Daniel examined the handwriting. “It looks like his.”

The sealed envelope was opened under the officer’s supervision. It contained a brief note addressed to Detective Harris, although the envelope itself was not addressed to anyone.

The note read: If you have found this, I was unable to return for it. Do not assume the person who carried the records was the person who altered them. Find the person who signed the final transfer.

Below the message was a name: Arthur Bell.

Harris recognized the name from the earlier investigation. Bell had been the solicitor involved in the original trust arrangement, but he had died years earlier. His files had been divided between a former law office and a private archive.

“Why would Walter leave this for the police?” Claire asked.

“Because he may have realized he couldn’t safely carry it himself,” Harris replied. “Or because he wanted us to investigate a particular lead without telling us where he was going.”

Daniel stared at the name. “My father could have left this at home. He could have called us. He could have trusted us.”

Harris did not attempt to defend Walter. “Those are questions you’ll have to ask him if we find him.”

An officer discovered a second compartment at the bottom of the cabinet. It held a damp photograph of a station platform and a narrow strip of paper bearing a telephone number. The number was no longer active, but the forensic examiner found traces of adhesive where another piece of paper had once been attached.

The photograph showed a man standing beside a timetable. His face was turned away, but the outline of his coat resembled the garment worn by the unidentified man in the earlier station footage.

“Could this be the person who met Walter?” Claire asked.

“It could be,” Harris said. “But we won’t label it as fact until we have something stronger.”

He arranged for the items to be transported for examination. Before leaving, Daniel walked to the edge of the old platform. The rails had been removed years earlier, leaving only parallel lines of gravel where trains once passed. He tried to imagine Evelyn standing there, waiting for someone who might never arrive.

His father had told him very little about his aunt. When Daniel was young, he had assumed she was simply a family member who had died or moved away. Walter had never explained the gaps in the family photographs or why certain names made him go silent.

Now Daniel understood that silence had been deliberate. What he still could not understand was whether his father had believed the silence would end one day or whether he had merely grown accustomed to carrying it.

Back at the house, Jonathan arrived with a folder of his own. He had received a preliminary legal assessment confirming that the trust documents deserved closer examination. The assessment did not prove that anyone had committed a crime, and it did not establish that Jonathan was entitled to claim the property without further proceedings.

“I don’t want to be the reason people start making accusations they can’t support,” Jonathan said. “But I also don’t want the records buried again.”

Claire offered him tea. He accepted and sat at the kitchen table, leaving the folder closed between his hands.

“Clara said Evelyn wanted me to have a choice,” he continued. “I’m trying to understand what that means now. If I pursue the trust, people may say I’m doing it for money. If I walk away, the records may disappear again.”

“You don’t have to choose between money and silence,” Claire said. “You can ask for the history to be examined without deciding what to do about the property.”

Jonathan looked at her with a guarded expression. “You make it sound simple.”

“It won’t be simple. But the choice should still be yours.”

For the first time since they had met him, Jonathan opened his folder. He showed them a letter from his solicitor requesting independent preservation of the documents and a formal review of the original transfer. He had not signed any claim to the property. He had only authorized the investigation to continue.

Daniel read the letter and nodded. “That’s a start.”

Jonathan glanced at Walter’s empty chair. “Do you think he’ll come back?”

Daniel took a breath. “I think he wants to. I don’t know whether he believes he deserves to.”

The distinction stayed with them long after Jonathan left. The evidence was moving forward, but the man who had gathered it remained out of reach. And now, for the first time, they had a name that could connect the documents to the final transfer—Arthur Bell, the dead solicitor whose signature might reveal what the living witnesses had spent decades avoiding.

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: The Signature That Changed the Meaning of the Agreement

The old railway building stood behind a row of shuttered workshops, its brickwork darkened by decades of rain.
