He paced beside the dining table, phone pressed to his ear, while I stood near the window with Peter's photograph still in my hand. Outside, our garden was dark except for the motion light above the back door. Every time a branch shifted in the wind, I found myself looking toward it.

The officer who answered knew about the visit to Peter and the letter he had received. Daniel explained that Miriam had now been sent a photograph of her cottage and a warning to stop speaking to us. He read the message aloud, then asked whether someone could be dispatched to check on her.

"An officer is already on the way," the woman replied. "Mrs. Cole has been advised not to remain alone tonight. We'll speak with her and collect the envelope."

Daniel thanked her, but his expression did not relax. When he ended the call, he looked at the photograph of Evelyn and her baby lying on the table.

"Someone knows every person we've spoken to," he said.

"Or someone has been watching the people Dad trusted for years."

He shook his head. "That might be worse."

I understood what he meant. If the surveillance had begun recently, it could be connected to the missing blue folder. If it had been going on for years, Walter might have been living under a kind of pressure we had never noticed. His refusal to discuss the past might not have been an old family habit. It might have been a precaution that had become part of his personality.

Daniel went upstairs to check on the children. I remained in the kitchen, gathering the photographs and notes into separate envelopes as the police had instructed. While sorting them, I noticed that the photograph Peter had given us had a faint pencil mark in one corner. It looked like a small number, possibly a seven, but it was too light to read clearly.

I carried it into the study and held it beneath the desk lamp. The mark was on the back, next to a date written in Peter's handwriting. Beneath the date was a brief phrase: "The second visit."

I called Daniel downstairs.

He examined the photograph, then opened the copy of the old bank receipt. The reference number on that receipt ended in the same digit. The cardboard scrap we had found in Walter's drawer also carried three numbers that matched the final digits of the deposit-box reference.

"Could the mark be part of the account number?" I asked.

"Maybe. Or maybe it's just a date or a filing note." Daniel placed the documents side by side. "We shouldn't assume every number is a clue."

For once, I was glad to hear him say it. We had spent days finding connections, and the temptation to force every detail into a single explanation was becoming difficult to resist.

We photographed the mark and sent it to the officer handling the case. She replied that she would compare it with the records already collected. She also reminded us not to attempt to access any account or storage facility without authorization.

That night, neither Daniel nor I slept well. He lay awake listening for the telephone, while I kept remembering Walter's question at dinner: Would you let me cook for myself? At the time, I had heard a challenge. Now I wondered whether he had been trying to reclaim some control over his life before he left it behind.

The next morning, an officer called to say that Miriam was safe. She had been escorted to her daughter's home, and the police had collected the envelope containing the photograph. The image appeared to have been taken from a public road, but investigators were checking whether the same vehicle had been seen near the cottage earlier in the week.

The officer also asked Daniel to come to the station that afternoon. The team had reviewed the material from Peter and wanted to discuss a new lead involving the old property transactions.

We arrived shortly before two. The officer met us in a small interview room and laid out several photocopies. One showed a transfer of land near the railway crossing. Another listed payments to three companies that no longer existed. The third was a letter from a former accountant who had worked for Walter's father.

The accountant's letter alleged that several properties had been purchased through intermediaries to conceal the identities of the real buyers. It did not accuse any specific person of fraud, but it named two individuals who had handled the accounts. One was Walter's father. The other was a business associate named Richard Vale.

Daniel stared at the name.

"Vale," he said. "I've heard Dad mention him."

"Do you know what happened to him?" the officer asked.

Daniel shook his head. "I thought he moved away. Dad never explained why."

The officer told us that Vale had died several years earlier, but his son, Andrew Vale, now ran a company that investigated property claims and traced assets for private clients. The consulting company linked to the man who visited Miriam had subcontracted work to Andrew's firm.

It was not proof that Andrew Vale had taken the blue folder or threatened anyone. It did, however, establish a connection between the current investigation and the family business that had surrounded the original property dispute.

"Why would his son care about something from forty years ago?" I asked.

The officer tapped the photocopy of the transfer. "Because if the trust is valid, someone may have a financial interest in proving it invalid. We haven't established that Andrew Vale has a direct stake in this property. But the records suggest his company has been looking into the matter."

Daniel leaned forward. "Can we speak to him?"

"Not yet. We need to establish the nature of his involvement before any contact is made. If he is connected to the threats, an informal conversation could compromise the investigation."

She asked us to describe every interaction we had experienced, including the caller who warned us to stop asking about the child. Daniel gave a detailed account. I described the photograph of Walter at our dining table and the envelope left on our car.

When we finished, the officer closed the file.

"There's something else you should know," she said. "A request was made last month for copies of historical records relating to the Hayes property. The request came through a legal representative, but the supporting documents were incomplete. It was rejected."

"Who made the request?" Daniel asked.

"The name on the form was Andrew Vale."

Daniel sat back slowly.

The officer explained that the request had not been illegal in itself. Historical property records could be requested by members of the public, subject to access rules. The concern was that the request appeared to have been part of a larger effort to establish the ownership of the house without revealing the client's identity.

"Could the client have been the child?" I asked.

"Possibly. Or someone claiming to represent the estate. We don't know."

The uncertainty followed us home. Daniel had begun to think of Andrew Vale as the likely source of the pressure, but I reminded him that a connection was not the same as proof. The man might be acting for someone else, or he might have stumbled upon the same records through legitimate research.

"Then why threaten Miriam?" Daniel asked.

"Because someone doesn't want her to talk," I replied. "That doesn't tell us who or why."

He looked frustrated, but he did not argue.

That evening, Margaret called to say she had found another item among Arthur's papers. It was a folded memorandum written by Arthur shortly before his retirement. The note referred to the original trust and stated that a second copy of the supporting records had been placed with an independent trustee.

The trustee's name had been obscured by a dark line of ink. The address, however, remained visible.

It belonged to a small legal office that had closed decades earlier.

Margaret sent us a photograph of the memorandum. Daniel recognized the street immediately. The office had been located near the old railway station, within walking distance of the building where Walter's father had conducted business.

"We need to tell the police," I said.

He called the officer and forwarded the photograph. She thanked him and said investigators would look into the former office's records. She also warned us that the memorandum might not identify a current custodian; old files were often transferred, destroyed, or miscatalogued.

After the call, Daniel sat at the dining table and opened the drawer where Walter had kept his household papers. He removed an old envelope containing receipts for plumbing repairs, insurance payments, and property taxes. At the bottom was a small folded sheet with a list of dates.

One date matched the memorandum's reference to the independent trustee.

Beside it, Walter had written a name.

"Edmund Price."

Daniel read it aloud. The name meant nothing to me, but his expression suggested it did to him.

"Who is that?" I asked.

"An old friend of Dad's. He was a clerk at the courthouse when I was a boy. He used to visit on Sundays, but I haven't heard his name in years."

"Do you know where he is now?"

"No."

Daniel searched public records and found an obituary for Edmund Price, who had died eight years earlier. His daughter, Helen Price, lived in Bellweather and worked as a librarian at the county archive.

We did not contact her immediately. Instead, Daniel sent the information to the police and waited for a response. The officer confirmed that Edmund had been listed as a witness on several historical property documents. His personal papers might have been donated to the archive after his death.

The next morning, an archivist called to say that the Price collection contained a sealed box marked for review only if someone produced a reference to the Hayes trust. The box had never been catalogued because the donor had requested that it remain closed until a specific condition was met.

The condition was written on the outside of the box.

"If Walter Hayes's family comes asking about the child, open this file."

Daniel read the archivist's message twice.

For the first time, I felt that we were no longer chasing someone else's trail. We were approaching a place Walter had deliberately prepared for us to reach.

But the archivist had added one more detail. The sealed box had been opened once before, six months earlier, by a person who claimed to be conducting research on behalf of a legal client.

The visitor's name was not recorded.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Sealed Archive Box Contained a Letter Walter Had Never Sent, and Its Contents Changed the Meaning of His Long Silence

Daniel called the police before he had finished reading Miriam's message.
