I still checked the locks before leaving the house, and I still saved the security reports, but I no longer opened the camera application every time my phone vibrated. The investigation was moving at its own pace, and I had to allow myself to live while it continued.

At 8:36 a.m., Vanessa sent me a message asking whether I was available to talk. She had received another email from Mark over the weekend, and she said it contradicted something he had told her earlier about the thirty-thousand-dollar transaction. She had forwarded the message to Officer Bennett, but she wanted to explain why she believed it mattered.

I called her.

“He says the money was never supposed to be paid to you,” she began. “He says it was evidence that he had enough money to support the arrangement. But before we moved, he told me he had already arranged the payment.”

I remained silent for a moment. “Did he explain why he described it as rent?”

“No. When I asked, he said I was getting confused about the details.”

I knew that phrase. During my marriage, Mark had often responded to uncomfortable questions by suggesting that the problem lay in the other person's memory. It was a convenient way to avoid discussing the actual discrepancy.

“What does the email say exactly?” I asked.

Vanessa explained that Mark had written that the money was intended to demonstrate his ability to contribute to the household expenses. In the same message, he insisted that the arrangement had always been temporary and that nobody had promised him permanent occupancy.

The email did not establish why the payment record used the reference associated with the rental agreement. Nor did it explain why the completed document appeared to show that I had already agreed to the terms. But it differed from the story Vanessa remembered hearing before the move.

“Have you told Officer Bennett about that difference?” I asked.

“Yes. I sent him the entire conversation, including the messages before and after it.”

“Good. Keep the original.”

She sighed. “I keep wondering whether he expected me to question any of this.”

“I can't answer that for you.”

“I know. I'm just trying to understand when the story changed.”

I told her that the investigators were in a better position to establish the sequence than either of us was. The email might clarify what Mark was claiming now, but it would not automatically prove what he had intended earlier. We needed to distinguish the statements themselves from the conclusions we might draw from them.

Vanessa agreed, although she sounded exhausted. Before we ended the call, she admitted that she had begun reviewing older messages from the months before the move. She was looking for the first time Mark had mentioned my house, hoping to establish when he began discussing it and what he had told her.

I encouraged her to preserve the correspondence and provide anything relevant directly to the investigators. I did not ask her to search for information that might support my suspicions. If she found something, it needed to be examined in context rather than selected because it fitted a particular explanation.

After the call, I sent Officer Bennett a brief message confirming that Vanessa had told me about the latest email. He replied that he had received it and would review it with the other correspondence.

I returned to my work, but the inconsistency remained in my thoughts. Mark had first presented the thirty thousand dollars as rent already arranged for the house. Later, the records suggested the money had not reached me. Now he was describing it as evidence that he could afford a temporary arrangement.

Each statement might have been intended to serve a different purpose, but I could not establish that. What I could establish was that none of them changed the fact that I had never agreed to rent him my property.

Around lunchtime, Emma called.

“Have you spoken to Vanessa?” she asked.

“Yes. She told me about the email.”

Emma exhaled. “Dad sent me something similar. He says everyone is misunderstanding the money and that it was never a payment to you.”

“Did he explain why he told Vanessa that the rental arrangement was settled?”

“He said he thought the paperwork would be completed once you understood what he needed.”

I put down my pen.

“Emma, did he ever show you a message from me agreeing to any of this?”

“No.”

“Did he ever tell you that I had signed a rental agreement while you were present?”

“No. He just said you knew about the plan.”

I waited, allowing her to consider her own answers.

“He always made it sound like the decision had already been made,” she said. “I think that's why I didn't question him enough.”

“Then that's something you need to remember when you explain what happened. Tell the investigators what he said and what you actually saw. Don't fill in the gaps.”

She agreed. She had already provided the original messages, and she said she would continue cooperating if the officers contacted her again.

After we hung up, I felt a mixture of sadness and relief. I hated that Emma was being forced to reconsider so much of what she believed about her father. At the same time, I was relieved that she was no longer automatically repeating his explanation as though it settled the matter.

That afternoon, Officer Bennett called to ask whether Mark had contacted me directly since his previous email. I told him that he had not. He also asked whether I had received any money from Mark after the divorce that might have been confused with the alleged payment.

I explained the documented financial exchanges that had occurred during the final arrangements of our marriage. Those transactions were unrelated to the property, and I offered to provide the records if the investigators needed them.

“That's helpful,” he said. “We're trying to make sure we don't mistake an unrelated transaction for the one being discussed.”

His answer reassured me. The investigation was not simply accepting the most suspicious interpretation. The officers were checking the details and separating one financial event from another.

Before ending the call, he asked me to continue preserving any new communication from Mark. I agreed.

That evening, I sat at the kitchen table and reviewed my timeline. I added the date of Vanessa's latest email and summarized the difference between Mark's earlier and later descriptions of the money. I included a note that the purpose of the transaction remained unverified.

Then I saved the file and closed the laptop.

I was learning to stop each entry at the edge of what I knew. I did not need to decide whether Mark had planned every detail from the beginning. I did not need to determine why the reference number appeared on two documents. I only needed to preserve the facts so that the people examining the evidence could do their work.

The next morning, Vanessa called again. This time, she sounded less confused and more resolved.

“I've decided I'm not going to discuss the documents with Mark anymore,” she said. “If he has something to explain, he can explain it to the investigators.”

“That seems sensible.”

“He keeps saying we should sit down together and sort it out privately. But every time I ask him a specific question, he changes the subject.”

I knew the pattern she was describing. Mark wanted the conversation to happen on ground where he could control its direction, where the documents could be replaced by explanations and the original questions could disappear beneath arguments about loyalty.

“You don't have to resolve the investigation for him,” I said.

“I know that now.”

She paused.

“I also want to be clear about something. I believed what he told me about your house, but I understand that my belief didn't give me the right to enter it or stay there.”

I appreciated her acknowledgment. It did not change what had happened, but it showed that she was beginning to separate what she had been told from what she was entitled to do.

“Thank you for saying that,” I replied.

We ended the call without discussing Mark further.

Later that afternoon, he sent me another email. The subject line read, “A Chance to End This.”

He wrote that the family had suffered enough, that Emma was becoming distressed, and that continuing to cooperate with the investigators would only make the situation harder for everyone. He said he was willing to put the dispute behind us if I would agree to a private conversation.

I read the message twice.

There was still no acknowledgment that I had never signed the rental agreement. He did not explain the different versions, the transaction reference, or the missing payment. Instead, he presented the investigation as something I was choosing to continue rather than a process examining the circumstances of his entry and the documents he had supplied.

I forwarded the email to Officer Bennett.

Then I archived it with the others.

I did not reply.

For years, I had believed that refusing to engage with Mark's explanations would make me appear unreasonable. Now I understood that I could cooperate with the investigation without debating every claim he sent me. My silence was not an admission, and it was not an attempt to punish him. It was a decision to keep the matter where it belonged.

That evening, I called Rachel and told her about the latest email. She listened, then reminded me that I had already provided the records and answered the questions put to me.

“You don't have to keep proving that your answer is no,” she said.

I looked toward the side door, where the new lock caught the light.

“No,” I replied. “I don't.”

Before bed, I checked the security system. There had been no further attempts to enter, and the access log remained unchanged. I turned off the screen and went upstairs.

I still did not know how the agreement had been completed, why the financial reference appeared on both documents, or who had approached the house late at night. But Mark's latest explanation had made one thing clearer: he was still trying to persuade people to accept his version before the underlying questions had been answered.

I would not help him do that.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: The Anonymous Inquiry Took on New Significance When the Investigators Compared It With Mark’s Earliest Messages

By Monday morning, I had begun to recognize the difference between being prepared for another development and spending every waking moment waiting for one.
