Her message was brief and careful, and I agreed to have coffee with her at three. When the doorbell rang, I checked the camera before opening the door. Seeing her standing alone on the porch gave me a small sense of relief, although I reminded myself that the purpose of the new security arrangements was not to turn every visitor into a suspect.

She waited until I invited her inside.

We went to the kitchen, where she set her bag on the chair beside her and looked around. The room was almost exactly as I had arranged it before the moving truck arrived. The counters were clear, the table was free of paperwork, and the photograph of us beside the lake remained on the shelf near the stairs.

“I brought something,” she said.

She took out her phone and opened a folder containing messages she had saved from the weeks before Mark entered the house. She had already provided the relevant conversations to the investigators, but she had found another exchange while reviewing the material they had requested.

“I don't know if this matters,” she said. “I haven't changed anything. These are the original messages.”

I asked her to explain what she had found before showing it to me.

She said that, shortly after Mark first mentioned my house, he had asked whether she remembered where I kept the paperwork from the purchase. At the time, she thought he was asking because he wanted to arrange the return of some belongings from our former home. She had answered that the documents were probably in a folder on my kitchen counter.

“That was before he asked me to take the photograph,” she said. “I didn't understand why he needed it.”

I felt a familiar heaviness settle in my chest.

“Did he tell you what he wanted to use it for?”

“He said he needed to confirm the address and show that the property belonged to you. He told me it was part of arranging the delivery.”

I looked at her phone.

“Did he say he needed your help to prepare a rental agreement?”

“No. Not in those messages.”

She opened the exchange. Mark had asked for a clear photograph of a page showing the address and my signature. Emma had asked why he needed it, and he had answered that he was trying to keep the arrangements organized.

The messages were consistent with what she had already provided, but one additional line caught my attention. Mark had written that the information would save everyone time later.

I read it again.

“Did you ask what he meant by that?” I said.

“I didn't. I thought he meant the moving company would need it.”

Emma looked down at her hands.

“I should have asked you instead.”

“Yes,” I said. “You should have.”

She did not argue. She had reached the point where she could acknowledge her decision without immediately asking me to absolve her of it.

I asked whether she had sent these messages to Officer Bennett.

“I sent the whole conversation, not just the screenshots. I also told him that I didn't know why Dad wanted the photograph.”

“Good. That's exactly what you should do.”

She nodded, then explained that she had been looking through her messages because she wanted to be certain she had not forgotten anything. She was afraid that leaving out an important detail, even accidentally, might make it seem as though she were hiding something.

I told her to continue preserving the original conversations and to answer questions honestly. She did not need to interpret her father's intentions or fill in gaps in her memory. If she did not know something, saying so was better than guessing.

For a while, we sat quietly with our coffee.

Then Emma asked, “Do you remember how Dad used to say that one person in a family had to take charge when everyone else was upset?”

I did remember. Mark had often described himself as the practical one, the person willing to make decisions when others became emotional. During our marriage, he had used that argument to justify handling matters without consulting me. If I objected, he would say he had acted because someone had to.

“He said it all the time,” I replied.

Emma nodded.

“I think I believed him. I thought if he made a decision, it was probably because he knew something I didn't.”

I watched her carefully. She was not asking me to condemn her father, but she was beginning to examine the assumptions that had shaped her own choices.

“That may explain why you trusted his explanation,” I said. “It doesn't make the decision to give him my code acceptable.”

“I know.”

She looked toward the side door.

“When I gave him the code, I told myself that I was helping him return your things. I didn't want you two to fight again, and I didn't want him to be upset with me. I thought I could keep everything under control.”

I recognized the pattern. I had used a similar justification for years, believing that I could prevent conflict by smoothing over problems before anyone else noticed them. The trouble was that the effort rarely ended the conflict. It simply placed the burden on the person who wanted the peace most.

“You were trying to manage a situation that wasn't yours to manage,” I told her. “Your father was responsible for asking me about the property. I was responsible for deciding whether to agree. You didn't have to become the person standing between us.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I wish I'd understood that sooner.”

“So do I.”

We did not embrace immediately. I wanted her to understand that our conversation was not a ritual in which she apologized and I automatically declared the matter finished. We could love each other and still acknowledge that something serious had happened.

Eventually, she reached across the table and took my hand.

“I am sorry, Mom.”

“I know.”

“I don't expect you to give me the code again. I just want you to know that I won't make decisions for you anymore.”

I squeezed her hand.

“That's a promise you will have to demonstrate over time.”

She nodded. For once, she did not ask how long that would take.

After she left, I saved a note recording that she had told me about the additional messages and had confirmed that the originals were provided to the investigators. I did not keep a separate copy of anything she had not authorized me to retain. There was no need to create another unofficial collection of material when the relevant conversations were already preserved.

That evening, I received a call from Officer Bennett. He asked whether Emma had told me about the additional exchange and whether I had any information beyond what she described.

I explained that she had shown me the messages and that I had not attempted to interpret their meaning. He thanked me and confirmed that the investigators had received the original conversation from her.

He then asked whether I remembered any occasion during the divorce when Mark had asked me for copies of the purchase documents or other property records.

I thought carefully.

“He asked about paperwork from our old house several times,” I said. “But I don't remember him asking for anything related to this property before I bought it.”

“Did you ever give him access to your email account or online banking after the divorce?”

“No.”

“Did you share your closing documents with him?”

“No. Emma took the photograph during a visit, but I didn't authorize her to send it to him.”

Officer Bennett recorded my answers and said he would contact me if further clarification was needed. The questions were practical, and I answered them as precisely as I could.

After we hung up, I sat by the living room window and thought about the distinction between the photograph and the agreement. The photograph established that someone had obtained information from my closing paperwork. It did not establish who prepared the rental agreement or whether the image had been used to create it.

Still, I could understand why the investigators wanted to know when Mark first requested the information. The request was part of the timeline, and the timeline was the only reliable way to establish the sequence of events.

The following morning, Vanessa sent a message saying she had been asked to clarify when Mark first showed her the completed agreement. She had provided the date as accurately as she could remember it and explained that she had not seen the earlier draft until after the move-in was interrupted.

I thanked her for the update.

She then wrote something that made me pause.

“I thought we were moving because he had arranged everything properly. Now I can't tell which parts of the story were real.”

I considered how to respond. I could tell her that I understood, but I did not know what she had been told privately or what she had experienced during their marriage. I did not want to turn her uncertainty into an opportunity to influence her decisions.

I wrote back that the records should be examined carefully and that she should make her own choices based on what she learned. I also reminded her to keep the original documents and follow the investigators' instructions.

She replied with a simple thank-you.

Later that day, Mark sent another email. The subject line read, “Emma Doesn't Need to Be Involved.”

I opened it, read the first paragraph, and stopped.

He claimed that Emma was being drawn into a dispute between adults and that the investigators should focus on the property rather than on family conversations. He said he regretted that she had been upset and insisted that he had never wanted her to feel responsible for the situation.

There was no mention of the code she had supplied, the photograph he had requested, or the agreement bearing my purported signature.

I forwarded the email to Officer Bennett without replying.

I felt angry, but the anger was accompanied by a clearer understanding of what Mark was trying to do. Even now, he was framing the problem around the discomfort Emma experienced rather than the decisions that had led her into it.

Emma was an adult. She had provided information about what she had done and what she had been told. Whether that information supported any conclusion was for the investigators to determine.

She did not need her father to protect her from the truth, and I did not need him to decide which questions were appropriate.

That evening, Emma called to ask whether Mark had contacted me.

“He sent an email,” I told her. “I've forwarded it to the officer.”

She sighed.

“He told me he doesn't want me to get into trouble.”

“I can't know what he intends. But telling the truth about what happened is not the same as accusing someone of something you don't know.”

“I know. I'm going to keep cooperating.”

I told her I appreciated that.

When the call ended, I walked through the house and turned off the lights one by one. I stopped beside the photograph on the shelf and looked at it for a moment.

I did not want our relationship to become permanently defined by a code, a photograph, and a series of messages. But I also knew that pretending those things had not happened would only preserve the same habits that had allowed the situation to develop.

We would have to build something different.

And for the first time, I believed Emma was beginning to understand what that required.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: The Financial Records Finally Clarified Where the Thirty Thousand Dollars Went, but They Raised a More Difficult Question About Mark’s Plan

Emma arrived at my house on Saturday afternoon after asking whether I was available to see her.
