Every time I closed my eyes, I saw my signature beneath the reference code MV-17, followed by the message warning me not to investigate further. Whoever had sent it possessed information about documents that had remained in my family’s storage for years. That meant either someone had been watching me closely or someone had access to records I had believed were private.

At seven the next morning, I placed the authorization, the copy-shop receipt, and the handwritten note inside a folder. I checked that my phone was charged and put Evelyn’s business card in my coat pocket. Daniel insisted on driving me to her office, although he had an important class that afternoon.

“You don't have to miss anything because of me,” I told him.

“I’m not missing class. I’m rearranging my morning.”

“You have a project due.”

“And you have someone threatening you over paperwork.” He opened the passenger door. “I think we can agree which one needs attention first.”

I wanted to argue, but the concern in his face stopped me. I had spent years trying to shield him from the financial and emotional strain of my recovery. Perhaps I had made the mistake of assuming that protecting him meant keeping him uninformed.

Evelyn was waiting when we arrived. She had spread several documents across the conference table, including a copy of the insurance authorization from her own case archive. Beside it lay a printed email from the insurer’s former claims department and a record showing when Hales’s office had transferred my file.

“Before we discuss the new message,” she said, “I want to compare the two authorizations.”

I placed my copy beside hers.

At first glance, the documents appeared identical. Both carried my name, my address at the time of the accident, and the same reference code. Both permitted the insurer to request certain medical and employment records. Both displayed a signature that resembled mine.

Then Evelyn pointed to the final paragraph.

“In the copy you found at home, the authorization covers medical records and employment information. In this copy, there is an additional clause.”

She slid the page toward me.

The added language permitted the release of certain financial records and correspondence held by third parties involved in investigating the accident. It also included a provision allowing the insurer’s appointed representatives to communicate directly with individuals identified during the investigation.

I read the paragraph twice.

“I never agreed to this.”

“Do you remember signing the version you brought me?”

“I remember signing an authorization at Hales’s office. I remember asking him to explain the language. I don't remember seeing this clause.”

Evelyn compared the signature blocks. “The documents carry different internal reference marks. Yours has MV-17. This one has a separate code associated with the insurer’s claims system.”

“Could someone have added the paragraph afterward?”

“It is possible, but we cannot establish that simply by looking at photocopies. We need the original records, including the version that was signed and the version transmitted to the insurer.”

Daniel leaned over the table. “If the longer version was submitted, couldn't they have obtained information Mom never agreed to release?”

“Potentially,” Evelyn replied. “But we need to determine whether it was actually used, who received it, and whether the authorization was considered valid.”

I looked at the signature again. The final stroke still seemed too long, but I could not trust my memory of how I had signed documents while taking medication and struggling through rehabilitation.

“What happens if somebody altered it?” I asked.

“We investigate the alteration, preserve the evidence, and determine what information was obtained under that document. If there was misconduct, we address it through the appropriate legal channels.”

Her answer was measured, but I could tell she was no longer treating this as a minor discrepancy.

She opened the email from the insurer. The claims department had located a reference to a supplemental review conducted several months after the accident. The review concerned a collection of financial records and correspondence that had not been included in the ordinary settlement file. The email did not identify the documents, but it indicated that an outside investigator had submitted a report.

The investigator's name was Marcus Vale.

I felt my fingers tighten around the edge of the table.

“Was that report ever given to you?” I asked.

“No,” Evelyn said. “Not according to the case archive. I have asked the insurer to provide a copy, along with the underlying correspondence.”

“Why would an investigator review my financial records after the collision?”

“That is one of the questions we need answered.”

Daniel straightened. “Could it have affected the settlement?”

“It could have influenced the insurer's assessment if the report was considered during negotiations,” Evelyn said. “We need to know what it contained before reaching that conclusion.”

I thought about the bills I had struggled to pay, the months when I could not work, and the years I had spent explaining to strangers why my injuries had not healed as quickly as expected. If someone had been collecting information about my private life while I was learning to walk again, the settlement might have been shaped by evidence I had never been allowed to see.

Evelyn wrote down the names of the departments she intended to contact. She also asked me to provide a written account of what I remembered from my first appointment with Hales.

I tried to reconstruct the meeting. The office had been on the second floor of an old commercial building. A printer sat on a cabinet near the door, and a framed certificate hung crookedly behind his desk. Hales had asked about my injuries, my employment, and the delivery company’s insurance offer. I remembered him handing me a document and telling me that the insurer needed authorization to review certain records.

I also remembered a telephone call interrupting the appointment.

Hales had answered, listened for several seconds, then looked at me and said he needed to postpone part of our discussion. Afterward, he had placed a sheet of paper inside a blue envelope and slipped it into a drawer.

At the time, I had assumed the paper was unrelated to my case.

I told Evelyn what I remembered.

“Did you see what was written on it?” she asked.

“No.”

“Did he mention the envelope?”

“No. I only remember seeing it.”

Evelyn made a note. “The memory may be incomplete, but we should include it in your account. Don't fill in any details you aren't certain about.”

As she spoke, I realized why the blue envelope had bothered me so much. I had been trying to remember whether I carried it away from Hales’s office, but I had overlooked the possibility that I had never possessed it in the first place.

Perhaps the envelope had remained in his desk. Perhaps someone had removed it later. Or perhaps the witness who saw a man reaching into my damaged car had been describing something entirely different.

The possibilities multiplied without bringing me closer to an answer.

Evelyn asked her assistant to contact Hales again, this time through a formal written request for his complete file and an explanation of the two authorization versions. She also arranged for the original photograph of my wrecked car to be examined by a qualified specialist, provided the police agreed to the procedure.

Before we left, she gave me a copy of the new document inventory.

“Keep this separate from the originals,” she said. “And don't respond to the person sending you messages. If another message arrives, preserve it and notify the police.”

I promised I would.

Outside the office, Daniel checked the time. His class had been moved online that morning, and he could attend from home. We decided to stop at the pharmacy before returning to the house.

As I was getting out of the car, a dark blue sedan passed slowly along the street.

I recognized the shape before I registered the color. It was the same kind of vehicle Laura had described outside my old house. The driver kept his eyes forward, but the car slowed as it passed the entrance to the parking lot.

Daniel saw it, too.

“Was that the one?” he asked.

“I don't know.”

He watched the sedan disappear around the corner, then took out his phone and wrote down the time and location.

“You don't need to turn this into an investigation every time a blue car passes,” I said.

“I'm not. I'm recording what happened in case it matters later.”

I could not fault his reasoning.

We returned home without incident. I spent the afternoon organizing the remaining documents, while Daniel attended his classes at the kitchen table. At three, Evelyn emailed to say that the insurer had acknowledged her request and expected to locate the supplemental report within several business days.

I tried to focus on that progress.

Then the telephone rang.

The caller identified himself as Robert Hales. His voice sounded older than I remembered, roughened by fatigue.

“I received your attorney's request,” he said. “I understand why you want answers.”

“Then answer my questions.”

“I can explain what I remember, but I need you to understand that I may not have the complete record anymore.”

“Did you keep a blue envelope in your office?”

There was a pause.

“Yes.”

My hand tightened around the telephone.

“What was in it?”

“A document provided to me by someone who believed your accident was connected to an earlier matter.”

“What earlier matter?”

“I can't give you a reliable answer without reviewing the file.”

“You knew about the other vehicle before the ambulance arrived.”

“I knew a witness had reported seeing one.”

“Why wasn't that information included in my case?”

“Because the witness refused to be identified, and I was unable to verify the account. I preserved the statement, but I did not submit it as established evidence.”

I felt anger rising in my throat.

“You could have told me.”

“I should have explained that there was an unverified statement. At the time, I believed protecting the witness's identity was necessary. I may have made the wrong decision.”

His admission did not excuse the omission, but it sounded more credible than the evasions I had heard from him the previous day.

“What was the blue envelope?”

“A copy of a document that appeared to show someone had accessed information connected to your employment before the accident. The person who gave it to me claimed the records had been altered.”

My mind returned to the faint words on the note: He says the records were changed.

“Who gave it to you?”

“I don't know whether I should tell you that over the telephone.”

“You called me.”

“Because I wanted to warn you that the document you found may not be the only version. If someone has sent you a photograph of the authorization, they may know where the rest of the file is.”

I glanced toward the cabinet where the documents were stored.

“Are you saying the blue envelope is still out there?”

“I don't know. I no longer have the original envelope.”

“What happened to it?”

Hales drew a slow breath.

“After I transferred your case file, someone came to my office and asked to see the supplemental records. I refused to release them without written authorization. A few days later, the envelope disappeared from a locked cabinet.”

I stood so abruptly that the chair scraped across the floor.

“Did you report the theft?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because I could not prove that anyone had taken it, and because I had already made a decision I regretted. I thought I could correct the matter quietly.”

“By doing nothing?”

He did not answer.

I could hear traffic through his end of the call, followed by the muted sound of a door closing.

“Mrs. Bennett,” he said, “I know how this sounds. I am not asking you to trust me. I am asking you to understand that the person who took that envelope may have been interested in more than your accident.”

“Then tell me what the earlier matter was.”

“I can't do that without seeing the records again.”

I wanted to demand an immediate meeting, but Evelyn's instructions came back to me. I needed a record of every contact, and I needed to avoid being drawn into a private conversation that could not be independently verified.

“I'll have my attorney contact you,” I said.

“That may be best.”

Before I could end the call, Hales spoke again.

“One more thing. If you find a reference to a company called Meridian Records, don't assume it was part of the insurance investigation. That name appeared in the document I received, but I never established why.”

I wrote the name on a piece of paper.

“Meridian Records?”

“Yes.”

The call ended.

I searched the name online, but the results were inconclusive. Several businesses used similar names, and none clearly matched the company Hales had mentioned. I sent the information to Evelyn and waited for her response.

She called twenty minutes later.

“Don't contact any company using that name yet,” she said. “I've found a reference to Meridian Records in an old document associated with the insurer. I'm requesting the full record.”

“What is it?”

“I don't know. But the reference appears beside the supplemental review conducted by Vale.”

I sat down slowly.

For the first time, the various clues seemed to be pointing toward the same place: the altered authorization, the missing envelope, the private investigation, and the records someone had warned me not to examine.

Evelyn promised to call as soon as she had more information.

That evening, I opened the drawer containing the authorization and checked the lock twice. The settlement had given me the means to repair my house and arrange better medical care. It had not given me peace. Instead, it had exposed a part of my past that someone seemed determined to keep hidden.

At nine, Daniel came downstairs carrying his laptop.

“Mom, I found something strange.”

He placed his phone beside me. On the screen was a photograph of the dark blue sedan that had passed us outside Evelyn's office. Daniel had taken it through the windshield as the car turned the corner. The license plate was partly visible.

“It's blurry,” he said, “but there are enough characters to make a start.”

I studied the image. It might have been the same car Laura had seen, or it might have belonged to an entirely unrelated driver. I did not want to encourage Daniel to become obsessed with every vehicle that passed our house.

Still, I sent the photograph to the police officer handling our report.

Then I noticed something reflected in the sedan's rear window.

A white rectangular sticker, placed near the lower corner of the glass, carried a small blue symbol.

I enlarged the image.

The symbol looked like two overlapping lines forming the letter M.

Beneath it were the faint words MERIDIAN.

I called Evelyn immediately.

When I described what Daniel had photographed, she went silent.

“Send me the original image,” she said. “Don't crop it or alter it.”

I did as she asked.

A few minutes later, she called back.

“It's too early to draw a conclusion,” she said, “but I want you to know something. The old insurer's records show that Meridian Records handled certain document-storage services for outside investigators.”

I looked at the laptop on the table, then at the locked drawer across the room.

“Does that mean the person following me works for them?”

“No. It means we have another connection worth investigating.”

After we ended the call, Daniel and I sat in silence.

The name on the car did not prove who was watching us. It did, however, suggest that the person behind the messages might have access to the same records Evelyn was trying to recover.

And if the missing blue envelope had ever passed through Meridian Records, someone there might know exactly what it contained.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Storage Company Denied Knowing Anything About My Accident Until Evelyn Asked for a Record They Had Never Expected Us to Find

I barely slept after receiving the photograph of the authorization.
