His handwriting was neat but uneven, as though he had written the pages over several days. He explained that he had learned the truth about his identity when he was seventeen, after his mother became seriously ill and gave him a locked box containing copies of the hospital records.

Until then, he had believed his father had died shortly before his birth. His mother had raised him under the name Jonathan Ward and refused to discuss the circumstances of his birth. When he asked why his hospital records were incomplete, she told him that some people had been trying to find him and that she had kept him safe by giving him a different name.

He had accepted her explanation because he trusted her. Only after her death did he discover that the child declared dead in the hospital records had been him.

Jonathan wrote that he had spent years trying to understand why Thomas Ellis had been connected to his birth. He found references to a guardianship agreement, a series of payments, and a photograph showing two infants in hospital bassinets. He eventually learned that the second child was Daniel Ellis.

The letter did not claim that the boys had been physically switched at birth. Instead, Jonathan believed that the confusion had begun with a deliberate attempt to conceal his identity while protecting him from people involved in the property fraud. The altered records had then been used to make the arrangement permanent.

I looked at Daniel.

“So you and Jonathan may have been connected from the beginning, but not necessarily because one of us was placed in the other's crib.”

He nodded slowly.

“That would explain why the documents never quite fit together.”

Evelyn examined the notebooks from the box. Several pages contained dates and names that matched the entries in the ledger. Jonathan had been searching for the original guardianship agreement for years, but he had never found a complete copy. He believed Thomas had kept the missing pages because they contained information about the people who had arranged the false death entry.

One notebook contained a list of addresses, including the private records office and the house where Richard Ellis had confronted us. Another listed payments made to companies connected to the property scheme. Beside several entries, Jonathan had written the same phrase.

“Identity used without consent.”

Michael leaned over the notebook.

“These are the same transactions I saw when I worked with Thomas. Someone was using the names of people who had no control over the companies.”

“Was Thomas one of those people?” I asked.

Michael hesitated.

“He was both a participant and a target. He helped create the arrangement, but I believe someone later used it against him.”

The distinction did not absolve Thomas. It suggested only that he might have lost control of the deception he had helped begin.

I returned to Jonathan's letter.

He wrote that he had met Thomas twice during his childhood. The first meeting took place when Jonathan was about eight years old. Thomas arrived at the house where Helen was staying and asked to speak with him privately. Helen refused, telling Thomas that he had already broken his promise by allowing the hospital records to be altered.

The second meeting occurred several years later, at the railway station. Thomas gave Jonathan a small envelope containing money and a photograph of a boy his own age.

The boy was Daniel.

Jonathan had not known Daniel's name at the time. Thomas told him that the child in the photograph had been raised under the identity Jonathan should have been allowed to keep. He insisted that the arrangement had been made to protect both boys, but Jonathan later came to believe that Thomas was trying to excuse his own choices.

The letter continued.

I was angry with him. I wanted to know why he had allowed me to grow up believing I had no family. He said the truth would have endangered me, but he never explained who was threatening me or why. When I asked whether Daniel knew, he said the boy had been raised to believe the official story.

I realized then that Thomas had not merely concealed Jonathan's existence from me. He had kept both boys ignorant of the arrangement, ensuring that neither could challenge it while they were young.

Daniel read the passage over my shoulder.

“He knew about me,” he said. “He had a photograph of me.”

“Yes.”

“And he still never came to see me.”

I folded the letter carefully.

“Perhaps he thought he was protecting you. Perhaps he was protecting himself. We still don't know.”

Jonathan's account became more specific as it described his later attempts to contact Daniel. He had found Daniel's name through an old school record and sent him a letter asking whether he knew anything about Thomas's business affairs. Daniel had replied with questions about his birth and his father's identity. The two began exchanging information, but their contact ended after someone threatened Jonathan and warned him not to involve Daniel.

The threat had been delivered in an envelope containing a copy of the hospital's altered record and a photograph of Helen outside the maternity ward.

Jonathan wrote that he had suspected Richard Ellis was behind the threats, but he had never obtained proof. He believed Richard wanted the original records destroyed because they could expose the financial scheme and the people who had profited from it.

“Did Jonathan ever say where he was now?” Evelyn asked.

I searched the final pages, but the letter ended without an address. He had written that he was leaving Bellhaven and would contact us if he could establish whether the remaining records were safe.

A date appeared at the bottom of the last page. It was only two years old.

Jonathan might still be alive.

We searched the notebooks for a current address. Most entries were outdated, but one page contained the name of a legal clinic in a neighboring city. Beside it was a note indicating that Jonathan had requested help obtaining a corrected birth record.

Evelyn called the clinic and explained that we were looking for a former client. The receptionist could not disclose confidential information, but she agreed to pass along a message if Jonathan remained in contact with the clinic.

While we waited, I examined the photographs in the box. One showed Helen holding a toddler beside a railway platform. Another showed Jonathan as a teenager, standing in front of a small house with a man whose face had been cut out of the picture.

The third photograph was different.

It showed two young men standing side by side outside a shop. They looked almost the same age, and their facial features were strikingly similar. One was Jonathan. The other was Daniel, though he appeared several years younger than he was in the most recent family photographs.

On the back, Jonathan had written a date and a sentence.

The first time I saw my brother.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“I don't remember meeting him.”

“You might have been very young,” I said.

He shook his head.

“No. Look at the date. I was eighteen.”

I checked the date again. It matched the year Daniel had spent several months working in a coastal town after finishing school. He had told me at the time that he was staying with a friend, but he had never mentioned Jonathan.

“Did you know someone named Jon when you were eighteen?” I asked.

Daniel thought for a long time.

“There was a man who worked at the shop where I stayed. He helped me find a room and gave me a job. He never told me his full name. I thought he was just being kind.”

He took the photograph from my hand.

“I remember him now. He had a scar on his wrist and always wore a watch with a cracked face.”

Jonathan's notebooks contained a description of the same watch.

The discovery changed the meaning of the letter. Jonathan had not simply been searching for Daniel from a distance. He had met him, perhaps hoping to establish a relationship without revealing the truth before he understood the risks.

But why had he kept the meeting secret?

Before we could discuss it further, Evelyn's phone rang. The legal clinic had returned her call. A staff member had located a message from Jonathan asking that any future inquiries about his birth records be directed to a private solicitor.

The solicitor's name was David Mercer.

We stared at one another.

Jonathan had been working with the same solicitor who was now helping us uncover the truth.

Evelyn called David immediately. He answered after several rings and listened as she explained what we had found in the box.

“I knew Jonathan Ward as a client,” he said. “But he never told me he had met Daniel.”

“Do you know where he is?” I asked.

David hesitated.

“I received a letter from him six months ago. He said he had found evidence that could establish what happened to the second child. He asked me to keep it safe until he could arrange a meeting.”

“Where is the evidence now?”

“Locked in my office.”

I felt a surge of relief.

“Then we need to see it.”

David's voice grew serious.

“There's a problem. Someone broke into the office last night.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: The Break-In at David’s Office Left the Original Contract Missing, but the Evidence Jonathan Had Hidden Elsewhere Pointed Toward a Living Witness

I read Jonathan's letter twice before I could continue.
