The tape hissed, his voice repeated the same sentence, and the recorder clicked off.

Ruth knows who signed the order.

Daniel stood beside the mantel, staring at the cassette player. Evelyn had taken out her notebook and was writing down the time stamp on the recording, while Michael sat with his elbows on his knees, rubbing his hands together.

“Did Thomas mean your sister-in-law?” Laura asked me.

“Yes.”

“Then you need to speak to her.”

I agreed, though the thought of facing Ruth again made my stomach tighten. She had withheld information about the insurance policy, the hospital records, and the man who had threatened her. Now we had evidence that Thomas believed she knew who had authorized the disappearance of a child.

I called Ruth.

She answered after the first ring.

“Margaret?”

“I need you to tell me the truth about the hospital records.”

Silence.

“Where are you?”

“With Daniel. We found Helen Ward's letters and a recording of Thomas.”

Ruth's breathing changed.

“What did he say?”

“He said you know who signed the order.”

For several seconds, she didn't speak. Then she whispered, “I was afraid this day would come.”

“Who signed it, Ruth?”

“I can't explain over the phone.”

“Then come here.”

She arrived forty minutes later, wearing a long coat over her nightclothes. Her face was drawn, and she looked older than she had that afternoon. When she entered Laura's living room, she glanced at the cassette recorder and then at Daniel.

“You shouldn't have brought him into this,” she said.

Daniel's expression hardened.

“I'm already in it. You just made sure I was the last person to know.”

Ruth lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

I placed the hospital documents and the photocopy of the agreement on the table. Ruth examined them without touching them. When she reached the page containing the two infant entries, she closed her eyes.

“The order was signed by a hospital administrator,” she said. “But he didn't act alone.”

“Who else was involved?”

“Thomas. Michael. And me.”

Michael rose from his chair.

“You told me you had nothing to do with the records.”

“I told you I didn't know what had happened to the second child.”

“You knew enough to keep quiet.”

“Yes,” Ruth replied. “I did.”

The admission silenced him.

Ruth explained that, shortly before Daniel's birth, Thomas had approached her with a request. He said a family connected to his business had become involved in a dangerous legal dispute. Their child was at risk of being used as leverage by people seeking control of the family's property and financial assets.

Thomas wanted Ruth to help arrange temporary protection for the child. He believed that moving the infant's records and placing him under another family's name would prevent the people involved in the dispute from finding him.

“I thought it was an emergency,” Ruth said. “He told me the arrangement would last only a few weeks.”

“And you believed him?” I asked.

“I wanted to believe him.”

She admitted that she had contacted the hospital administrator and helped deliver a sealed envelope containing the authorization papers. She did not claim to have changed the records herself, but she knew the paperwork would result in one child's identity being obscured.

The arrangement had been presented to her as a way to protect a child until the legal dispute could be resolved. What she had not understood was that the documents would later be used to conceal financial transactions and shield the people responsible for the original fraud.

“Why didn't you stop it when you realized what had happened?” Daniel asked.

Ruth looked at him.

“Because by then, I had signed papers that could have sent me to prison. I was afraid that if I spoke, the people who arranged the transfer would blame me for everything.”

“So you let Mom live with a lie.”

“Yes.”

The simplicity of her answer seemed to hurt Daniel more than any excuse could have.

I asked her who had signed the order declaring the second child dead. Ruth said the order had been prepared by the hospital administrator, but the authorization had come from a lawyer representing the company involved in the property scheme. She remembered the lawyer's initials, but she had never learned his full name.

“Why would a lawyer want a child declared dead?”

“Because the child was connected to a family that owned property the company wanted to control,” Ruth replied. “As long as the child remained legally connected to that family, certain assets couldn't be transferred without additional scrutiny.”

Evelyn looked at the ledger.

“That explains the payments made after the birth. Someone was paying to keep the records consistent with the property transfers.”

Ruth nodded.

“The money wasn't all for the hospital. Some of it went to people who agreed to maintain the false paperwork.”

Michael shook his head.

“And Thomas let them use my name.”

“He thought he could control the arrangement,” Ruth said. “He believed that once the investigation ended, he could correct the records and return everything to normal.”

“But he never did,” I said.

“No.”

Ruth explained that Thomas had tried to reverse the arrangement shortly before his supposed death. He contacted Helen Ward and asked her to preserve the original records. He also arranged for copies to be placed in the storage unit and the private records office.

Then, according to Ruth, he discovered that someone had begun investigating him.

“He told me that if he stayed, the people involved would destroy the evidence and blame him for everything,” she said. “He said he had to disappear long enough for the records to be found.”

I thought of the accident report, the closed-casket funeral, and the ashes I had scattered beneath the maple tree.

“Did Thomas actually die in the accident?”

Ruth looked at me with tears gathering in her eyes.

“I don't know.”

The answer was more frightening than a confession.

She said she had never seen the body. Thomas's identification had been established through his wallet and wedding ring, and the authorities had closed the case after the insurance investigation. She had accepted the official account because she had been told that asking further questions would endanger Daniel.

“Who told you that?”

“The lawyer.”

“Was it Richard?”

“No. Richard came later. The lawyer was already involved before Thomas disappeared.”

Evelyn placed the photograph of Michael Reed on the table.

“Could the man in this picture be Thomas?”

Ruth examined it carefully.

“The resemblance is strong, but I can't be certain.”

“Then who is Michael Reed?”

Ruth looked toward Michael.

“I believe Michael was the person Thomas used to establish the false business identity. But the man who disappeared may have been someone else entirely.”

Michael shook his head.

“You're saying Thomas might have been an impostor?”

“I'm saying I don't know who he really was.”

The room fell silent.

For the first time, the central question was no longer simply whether Thomas had survived the accident. We had evidence that he had used another man's identity, that he had participated in a secret arrangement involving two children, and that someone had later used the same arrangement to conceal a financial crime.

But we still did not know which parts of the story had been planned by Thomas and which had been forced upon him.

Daniel turned toward Ruth.

“Which child was I supposed to be?”

Ruth looked at the hospital record.

“I was told that you were the child Thomas had promised to protect. I never saw the other infant after the transfer.”

“Then you don't know whether I'm the child who was meant to be protected or the child who disappeared.”

“No,” she whispered. “I don't.”

Daniel walked to the window and stood with his back to us. I wanted to comfort him, but I understood that he needed time to absorb the possibility that his birth records might not reflect the circumstances of his birth.

I approached Ruth.

“You could have told me years ago.”

“Yes.”

“You could have trusted me enough to let me decide what to do.”

“Yes.”

“Instead, you made that decision for me.”

Ruth nodded, tears running down her face.

“I was afraid that the truth would destroy the family.”

I looked at her for a long moment.

“The family was already being destroyed. You just made sure I couldn't see it happening.”

She did not argue.

Before we left Laura's house, Evelyn made digital copies of the recording and every document we had collected. She sent them to the solicitor, along with a request for an urgent meeting. We agreed that the originals should remain secured until we could establish a proper chain of custody.

Michael offered to take Daniel home, but my son refused.

“I want to stay with Mom.”

The words surprised me. I had expected him to leave again, perhaps out of shame or anger. Instead, he stood beside me while I collected my handbag and coat.

Outside, the sky had begun to lighten. Dawn was spreading across the rooftops, turning the wet pavement silver.

As we reached the car, Ruth called my name.

I turned.

She held out a small folded paper.

“I kept this because I thought it might matter one day.”

It was a receipt for a payment made to the hospital administrator two days after Daniel's birth. The amount matched one of the circled entries in the ledger.

Beneath the account number was a handwritten reference to a second location.

A cemetery.

And beside it, a name I had never seen before.

Thomas Ellis.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Cemetery Receipt Led Us to a Grave Registered Under Thomas’s Name, but the Groundskeeper Remembered Someone Visiting It Long After the Funeral

I played the final thirty seconds of the recording again, hoping I had misunderstood Thomas's words.
