His voice was calm, almost courteous, but there was something rehearsed about the way he introduced himself. He spoke as though he had expected this meeting for years and had already decided how it would end.

“You cannot be Arthur Ellis,” I said. “Arthur died before Daniel was born.”

The man placed the folder on the desk.

“That is what the records say.”

“Then why are you using his name?”

“Because someone else used it first.”

Daniel shifted in his chair, wincing as he moved his shoulders. I crossed the room and stood beside him.

“Are you hurt?”

“No. He didn't hit me.” Daniel glanced at the man. “He just wouldn't let me leave until I listened.”

The stranger's expression barely changed.

“Your son came here voluntarily. He wanted answers. I merely insisted that he hear them before running away again.”

“You don't get to decide whether my son can leave.”

“Perhaps not. But I can decide whether to reveal information that could destroy several lives.”

Evelyn entered behind me, followed by Michael. The stranger looked at each of them in turn, lingering on Michael's face.

“You should have stayed away,” he said.

Michael stepped forward.

“I've spent thirty years staying away. It didn't save anyone.”

The man opened the folder and removed a document. It contained several typed paragraphs, a series of signatures, and a stamp from a legal office that had closed decades earlier. The heading referred to an agreement concerning the identity of a minor child.

Daniel leaned toward me.

“This is what he showed me earlier.”

I examined the page. It stated that a child born on March 18 had been placed under the care of Thomas Ellis pursuant to a private arrangement involving two families. The biological father's name was obscured by a black bar. A handwritten clause beneath the main text stated that the arrangement would remain confidential until the child reached adulthood.

The document was dated three months before Daniel's birth.

“This could be forged,” I said.

“It could,” the stranger replied. “Which is why you should examine the signature.”

He pointed to the bottom of the page.

The name was Thomas Ellis.

I recognized the handwriting from dozens of letters, birthday cards, and the notes he used to leave on the kitchen counter. The signature looked authentic, but that did not prove the document itself was genuine.

“Why would Thomas agree to this?” I asked.

“Because he believed he was protecting the child.”

“From what?”

“From a family that had already begun to destroy itself.”

I wanted to demand a clearer answer, but the man continued before I could speak. He explained that, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, several people connected to the Ellis and Price families had been involved in a network of fraudulent property transfers. Companies were created under false names, assets were moved between accounts, and legitimate owners sometimes discovered that their deeds had been altered without their knowledge.

Thomas had worked with Michael on some of those transactions. Arthur, according to the stranger, had discovered the scheme and threatened to expose it.

“That's what we were told,” Evelyn said. “But you haven't explained why you're using his name.”

The stranger looked at her.

“Because the real Arthur Ellis was my brother.”

The room fell silent.

Evelyn took a step forward.

“You're saying you're related to Thomas?”

“Yes.”

“Then what is your real name?”

The man hesitated.

“Richard Ellis.”

The name meant nothing to me, but Michael reacted immediately.

“You were listed as deceased,” he said.

Richard gave a thin smile.

“So were several people in this story.”

He claimed that he had left the country in the early 1990s after discovering that his brother had been involved in the property scheme. He had used different names to protect himself and had eventually returned under the identity of a deceased relative. The arrangement had allowed him to investigate the missing records without drawing attention to himself.

I found the explanation difficult to accept. He had offered no proof that he was related to Arthur, and the documents he carried could have been assembled by anyone with access to the family records.

“Why should we believe you?” I asked.

“Because I can tell you something the documents cannot.”

He looked at Daniel.

“The night you were born, two infants were delivered in the same hospital. One belonged to a woman whose husband had died before the birth. The other belonged to a couple who had arranged to give their child to a family they trusted. Both children were entered into the records under temporary names.”

Daniel stared at him.

“Are you saying I was switched with another baby?”

“I'm saying the hospital records were deliberately altered. Whether a physical switch occurred is a separate question.”

The distinction mattered. Until that moment, I had imagined that someone had carried one baby out of a room and replaced it with another. Richard's explanation suggested something more complicated: a legal arrangement, perhaps involving a child whose parentage needed to be concealed.

“What happened to the other child?” I asked.

Richard looked toward the folder.

“That is what the missing records were supposed to establish.”

Evelyn opened her bag and removed the photocopies from the ledger. She laid them on the desk beside Richard's document. Several names and account numbers matched the references in the agreement.

“You're connected to the property transfers,” she said. “Your name appears in these records.”

Richard examined the pages without touching them.

“My name appears because I helped investigate them. That doesn't mean I was responsible for the transactions.”

“Then why did you disappear?”

“Because I found evidence that could implicate people who had already arranged to have others blamed.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“You mean people like me?”

Richard's expression hardened.

“You were paid to sign documents you didn't understand. You were also warned not to ask questions. That made you useful.”

Michael took a step toward him.

“You destroyed my marriage.”

“I didn't send the letters to your wife.”

“But you knew who did.”

Richard said nothing.

The silence answered more than he intended.

I looked at Daniel, who had been watching the exchange with a strange, distant expression.

“What do you believe?” I asked him.

He rubbed his wrists.

“I don't know. I thought finding Michael would answer everything. Instead, I found out that every person who should have protected me was keeping something from me.”

His voice cracked on the final words.

I sat beside him.

“I kept things from you too,” I said. “Not because I knew about the records, but because I spent years pretending that if I ignored the worst parts of our family, they would eventually disappear.”

He looked at me, his eyes shining.

“You still let me believe everything was normal.”

“I did.”

I had no defense that could make the admission less painful. I had allowed Daniel to believe that his father was exactly who he claimed to be. I had trusted the official story of Thomas's death because I needed it to be true. I had accepted Ruth's silence because questioning her might have forced me to confront things I didn't want to see.

Daniel looked away.

Richard cleared his throat.

“There is one more document you need to see.”

He removed a thin sheet from the folder and placed it in front of me. It was a hospital authorization form bearing the signature of the attending physician. Beneath it were two entries, each referring to a newborn delivered on March 18.

The first entry listed a boy whose temporary identification number matched the number on the photograph Michael had shown me.

The second entry listed another boy, but the name had been crossed out.

In the margin, someone had written a single word.

Transferred.

“Transferred where?” I asked.

Richard folded his hands.

“That is the question the original records were meant to answer.”

Evelyn pointed to a reference number in the lower corner. It matched a code in the ledger, beside a payment made three days after Daniel's birth.

Michael leaned over the document.

“That's the account Thomas used when he transferred money to the private records office.”

“Who received it?” I asked.

Richard looked at me.

“A woman named Helen Ward.”

The name struck a chord. It was the same name attached to the photograph Evelyn had brought from her father's papers, the woman standing outside the brick building with a baby in her arms.

“Who was she?”

“She worked at the hospital,” Richard said. “And she was the last person known to have handled the original infant records before they were amended.”

Daniel rose from the chair.

“Then we find her.”

Richard shook his head.

“You can't. Helen Ward died twelve years ago.”

He closed the folder and placed it beneath his arm.

“But her daughter is still alive.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Helen Ward’s Daughter Had Inherited a Box of Unopened Letters, and One of Them Contained the First Evidence That Thomas Had Tried to Undo His Own Deception

For several seconds, I could do nothing but stare at the man standing beside the window.
