Thomas stood in the hospital corridor wearing the same gray suit he had worn in the wedding pictures. His expression was serious, his gaze fixed on someone outside the frame. The baby in his arms was wrapped in a pale blanket, and a hospital bracelet circled one tiny wrist.

The message on the back claimed that the child in the photograph was not the child who had left the hospital. If that statement was true, then someone had switched the records, the baby, or both. But the photograph alone could not establish what had happened.

“Who wrote this?” I asked.

Michael shook his head.

“It was attached to the letter I received three months ago. I assumed Daniel had written it.”

“Did you ask him?”

“I tried. He stopped answering my calls.”

I turned the photograph over again, searching for details that might help identify the baby. The bracelet number was too small to read. The corridor looked familiar, but hospitals all shared the same mixture of white walls, metal rails, and harsh overhead lighting.

“What did Thomas tell you when he asked you to sign the document?”

Michael took a long breath.

“He said a mistake had been made in the company records, and he needed my signature to establish that I had authorized a transfer. I remember objecting because I didn't understand the figures. He told me it was a routine correction and that the money had already been accounted for.”

“And you signed?”

“Yes.”

“Did you see a child?”

Michael hesitated.

“I saw a nurse carrying a baby. Thomas was standing near the door, and he asked me to wait while he spoke to someone. When he came back, he was holding the child in the photograph.”

I stared at him.

“Did you know whose baby it was?”

“No. I didn't ask. I thought he was visiting a relative.”

“You were at the hospital on the night my son was born, and you never wondered why?”

“I wondered. I was afraid to ask.”

His answer made me angry, but I could see that he had been frightened for years. Fear could explain silence. It could not erase the damage that silence caused.

“Do you have anything else?” I asked.

Michael opened the suitcase again and removed a small notebook with a cracked leather cover. He explained that he had kept it during the period when he worked with Thomas. Most of the entries concerned business meetings and account numbers, but several pages referred to hospital visits.

One entry, dated March 18, read: “T. says the boy must be registered under the existing family name. Original papers to be held until the matter is settled.”

Another, written the following day, read: “Two records. One child. No further questions.”

I read the words aloud.

Michael looked away.

“I never understood what they meant.”

“Why didn't you give this to the police?”

“Because I didn't know whether it proved a crime or merely a financial arrangement. And by the time I realized how serious it might be, Thomas was supposedly dead.”

I thought about the ledger in the storage unit, the insurance policy, and the altered hospital records. The pieces were beginning to connect, but the shape they formed remained uncertain. Thomas had used Michael's identity in business dealings. Someone had changed the hospital record after Daniel's birth. Someone had paid money under false names. And now a photograph suggested that the baby who left the hospital might not have been the baby who entered it.

“What happened to the other child?” I asked.

Michael closed the notebook.

“I don't know.”

A knock sounded at the door.

We both froze.

The knock came again, followed by a man's voice.

“Michael? Open up. We need to talk.”

Michael's face went pale.

“That's the man who came here earlier.”

I stepped away from the door and reached for my phone. Michael shook his head urgently and pointed toward the bathroom. I followed him into the small room, where he turned on the tap to cover the sound of our movements.

Through the thin wall, I heard the lock rattle.

“Michael, I know you're in there,” the man called. “Don't make this difficult.”

The door remained closed.

After a few seconds, footsteps moved away from the room. We waited until the sound faded, then returned to the main room.

Michael looked through the curtain and watched a dark vehicle pull away from the motel. He said nothing for several seconds.

“I'm leaving tonight,” he finally said. “I suggest you do the same.”

“I won't leave without finding my son.”

“If that man knows Daniel contacted me, he'll be looking for him, too.”

“Then help me find him.”

Michael studied my face.

“I spent thirty years trying to forget what happened. I told myself that staying away from your family was the only way to protect you. Now I think I was protecting myself.”

He took a piece of paper from the notebook and wrote down an address. It belonged to a small house on the outskirts of town where he had met Thomas several times during the property company's final months.

“Thomas kept a second set of records there,” he said. “I never saw what was inside, but he once told me that if anything happened to him, the documents would explain why he had to disappear.”

“Why didn't you go there after his death?”

“Because the house was sold under a different name, and I didn't know who owned it. I only learned the address again when Daniel contacted me.”

I folded the paper and placed it in my bag.

“Will you come with me?”

Michael looked toward the window.

“Yes. But we need to leave separately.”

We agreed to meet at a café near the railway station after dark. I would return home first, contact Evelyn, and tell her what we had discovered. Michael would check out of the motel and take a different route to the meeting place.

Before I left, I asked him one final question.

“Do you think Daniel is your son?”

He lowered his eyes.

“I don't know. But if he is, then I owe him the truth. If he isn't, I still owe him an explanation for the part I played in this.”

I drove home with the photograph on the passenger seat. Every traffic light seemed to hold me in place longer than necessary. I kept thinking about Daniel as a newborn, the tiny fingers curling around mine, and the way he had cried whenever I left the room.

Whatever had happened at the hospital, I had loved him from the first moment I held him.

That love did not depend on his blood.

But the people who had controlled the records might have believed otherwise, and I needed to understand why.

Evelyn was waiting in my kitchen when I arrived. She had spread the photocopies across the table and marked several entries in the ledger with small adhesive tabs. When I told her about Michael, she listened carefully, then examined the photograph.

“The dates match,” she said. “And the handwriting on the back resembles a note my father kept in his desk.”

“Can you identify the writer?”

“Not with certainty.”

She placed the photograph beside a copy of the hospital report. Both documents referred to the same date, but neither named the baby shown in the picture.

Evelyn explained that Samuel had once told her about a dispute involving two families and a child whose identity had been deliberately obscured. He had refused to provide details, claiming that the people involved had made a private arrangement and that exposing it without proof could endanger innocent people.

“Did he ever mention Thomas?” I asked.

“Only once. He said Thomas believed he could solve any problem by changing the paperwork.”

I thought of the forged identities, the altered hospital records, and the false insurance documents.

“Maybe he was trying to hide a crime.”

“Perhaps. But there's another possibility. Someone might have been using Thomas's methods against him.”

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“Suppose the original fraud involved money and property. Suppose Thomas discovered that someone else had been using his identity, or that his own records had been altered. He might have tried to correct the situation without exposing himself. That would explain why the hospital records, the insurance documents, and the business ledger all contain conflicting information.”

It was possible. It was also possible that Thomas had been the architect of the deception from the beginning. We needed the original records before drawing conclusions.

I told Evelyn about the house Michael had identified. She recognized the area immediately.

“My father used to visit a property there,” she said. “He called it the second office. He said it was where the real decisions were made.”

We decided to go there the following morning, after making copies of everything we had collected. Evelyn insisted that we tell someone where we were going. I agreed, although I wasn't sure whom we could trust.

Before we could leave, my phone rang.

It was Daniel.

“Mom,” he said, his voice strained. “I need you to listen carefully.”

“Where are you?”

“I can't tell you that yet.”

“Are you safe?”

“I think so.”

I gripped the phone with both hands.

“Daniel, I've found the records. I know you were searching for Michael Reed.”

He inhaled sharply.

“You met him?”

“Yes.”

“Did he tell you what happened?”

“He told me what he remembers. I need to hear your side, too.”

Daniel was silent for several seconds.

“I didn't leave because I was angry with you,” he said. “I left because someone showed me a document proving that the man who raised me wasn't my biological father.”

“I know.”

“No, Mom. You don't understand. The document didn't just name Michael Reed. It showed that Thomas signed an agreement before I was born, promising to keep me under his name until I turned eighteen.”

I felt the room tilt.

“Who showed you that document?”

“A man who said he worked for the company Thomas used to run.”

“What's his name?”

Daniel's voice dropped to a whisper.

“He called himself Arthur Ellis.”

I stared at Evelyn.

Arthur had been dead for decades.

“Daniel,” I said carefully, “that name belongs to your grandfather. He died before you were born.”

“I know. That's why I'm calling you. The man who gave me the document knew things about our family that nobody outside it should know. He told me to meet him tonight.”

“Don't go.”

“I already did.”

My heart began pounding.

“What happened?”

Daniel swallowed hard.

“He showed me a photograph of two babies. One was me. The other had the same birth date. Then he told me that one of us had been given the wrong name.”

The line crackled.

“Daniel, where are you now?”

“Somewhere safe. I think.”

A door slammed on his end of the call.

He whispered something I couldn't make out, then the line went dead.

I tried calling him back, but his phone had been switched off.

Evelyn reached across the table and took my hand.

We had spent days searching for a single truth about Thomas, but the evidence now pointed toward a much larger secret. Two children had been recorded on the same date. One had been raised as my son. The other might have disappeared entirely.

And somewhere, a man was using the name of a dead grandfather to draw Daniel into a meeting he might never come back from.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Man Calling Himself Arthur Ellis Knew Where Daniel Was Hiding, and His Next Message Forced Me to Choose Whom I Could Still Trust

I held the photograph so tightly that its edges bent beneath my fingers.
