I could hear machinery in the background and the distant sound of men talking.

"Mom, the customer has postponed the payment again."

I sat down at the kitchen table.

"How long?"

"They haven't given me a date. They say the final inspection hasn't been completed, and they're disputing part of the invoice."

"Is the dispute legitimate?"

"Some of it might be. There's a change order they say wasn't approved correctly. My project manager thinks we can resolve it, but it won't happen overnight."

I asked whether his accountant had seen the correspondence. Robert said the accountant was reviewing it and had advised him not to assume the payment would arrive until the dispute was resolved.

"That's sensible," I said.

"I know. But if the money doesn't come in, I don't have enough to cover everything due next month."

He explained that the company had several supplier accounts approaching their limits. Payroll was due the following week, and a lease payment on a piece of heavy equipment would fall due shortly afterward. The bank had not rejected his restructuring request, but it had made clear that any additional borrowing would depend on a credible plan and reliable financial information.

"What are your options?" I asked.

"Reduce expenses, negotiate with suppliers, and try to get the customer to release at least part of the payment. The accountant says we should also look at selling some equipment we don't use often."

"Then start there."

He gave a tired laugh.

"You're making it sound simple."

"I'm not saying it's easy. I'm saying those are the options you've identified, and they don't require my house."

He was quiet for a moment.

"No, they don't."

I heard a door close on his end.

"There's something else," he said. "Adrian called yesterday."

"What did he want?"

"He asked whether I'd found another source of collateral. I told him the property proposal was off the table and that you had not consented to it."

"How did he respond?"

"He said he understood, but that his company couldn't move forward with the original financing proposal. He offered to review the business accounts again if we could provide updated figures."

"Will you do that?"

"I think so. My accountant wants to review the terms first."

"Good."

Robert hesitated before speaking again.

"Vanessa thinks we should keep talking to Adrian. She says we shouldn't give up on financing just because the first plan didn't work."

"Talking to a lender isn't the problem. The problem is making decisions before you understand the terms."

"I know."

He sounded more resigned than defensive, and I wondered whether the repeated setbacks were finally forcing him to distinguish between hope and a plan.

That afternoon, Robert and his accountant met with the bank's business lending team. I wasn't present, and I didn't ask for confidential details beyond what Robert chose to share. He called me afterward and said the bank was willing to consider a temporary restructuring arrangement if he could provide updated cash-flow forecasts and evidence that he was reducing costs.

"They want me to cut the monthly expenses by fifteen percent," he said. "And they want a schedule showing when each overdue supplier account will be brought current."

"Can you do that?"

"Maybe. I have to make some difficult decisions."

He told me that two projects were consuming more cash than expected and that one would need to be suspended. Another might be completed if he could negotiate different payment terms with the supplier. He was also considering selling a piece of equipment that had been sitting unused for months.

"Will anyone lose their job?" I asked.

"I don't know yet. I'm trying to avoid that, but I can't promise there won't be changes."

I felt sorry for him. He had built his business over two decades, employing people who depended on him for their livelihoods. The possibility of letting them down was painful.

Still, I knew that avoiding every painful decision could make the eventual damage worse.

"Be honest with your employees," I told him. "They deserve to know what is happening if their work is affected."

"I will."

The next day, Lily called while I was sorting laundry. She had spoken with her father and was worried about the business. She asked whether I could lend him money if the bank refused to help.

"I could consider a small loan if I had the money available and the terms were clear," I said. "But I won't borrow against my home or guarantee his debts."

"Wouldn't that be enough to save the company?"

"I don't know. And I won't pretend I can solve a financial problem without seeing all the numbers."

She was quiet.

"I just don't want Dad to feel like everyone has given up on him."

"Neither do I. But supporting someone doesn't mean promising an outcome you can't control."

I asked whether Robert had told her about the revised plan. She said he had explained that the bank was reviewing the accounts and that the company needed to reduce costs. He hadn't asked her for money, and I was glad of that.

"Your father is responsible for the business," I said. "You can love him without carrying his debts."

She thanked me and said she understood.

On Saturday, Robert arrived at my house with a cardboard box containing old invoices and several binders. He wanted to review the company's expenses with his accountant over the weekend and had stopped by to collect a set of records he had left in my garage years earlier.

While he was searching through the garage, I noticed him pause beside the workbench where his father had once repaired fishing reels. He picked up an old screwdriver and turned it over in his hand.

"Dad used to tell me that if a machine kept breaking down, you had to find out what was wrong before replacing parts," he said.

"He did."

Robert put the screwdriver down.

"I think I've been replacing parts for years without fixing the real problem."

I leaned against the doorframe.

"What do you think the real problem is?"

He considered the question.

"I took on too much work without enough cash behind it. I assumed the customers would pay on time, and when they didn't, I borrowed to cover the gaps. Then I took on more work to cover the borrowing. I thought growth would solve everything."

"And now?"

"Now I have to decide which work is actually profitable and which jobs are making the situation worse."

It was the clearest explanation he had given me yet.

I told him that admitting a problem was not the same as failing. He looked at me, then gave a small nod.

"I wish I'd talked to you earlier."

"So do I."

He left with the binders and promised to keep me informed about the bank's decision. I didn't ask him to stay for dinner, and he didn't ask me for anything else.

The following week, Daniel called to confirm that he had received the complete correspondence from Adrian's consultancy. He had reviewed the financing proposal and found no evidence that a transfer had been completed or that anyone had attempted to record a lien against my house.

"The legal side appears straightforward at this stage," he said. "You declined the proposal, and your property records remain unchanged. If anyone presents a new agreement, we'll review it before you sign anything."

I thanked him.

"Do you think I should change my will?"

"Not because of this incident alone. Your will should reflect your wishes, not serve as a reaction to a difficult family disagreement. We can review it if you want to make sure your estate plan remains appropriate."

I appreciated that advice. I didn't want to punish Robert by changing my estate arrangements out of anger. My home and my savings were mine to manage, and any decisions about inheritance would be made according to my values and circumstances, not as a response to a temporary crisis.

I scheduled a routine review for the following month.

Meanwhile, Robert's situation continued to develop. His accountant identified several expenses that could be reduced, and he sold the unused equipment to a contractor who needed it for a short-term project. The sale did not solve the debt problem, but it provided enough cash to cover a portion of the supplier balances.

The bank agreed to continue reviewing the restructuring proposal, provided Robert submitted updated figures each week. It was not a promise that the company would survive. It was an opportunity to prove that the business could operate more sustainably.

When Robert told me the news, he sounded relieved.

"They haven't approved everything, but they haven't closed the door either."

"That's progress."

"I know. I have a lot of work ahead of me."

"Then take it one step at a time."

He asked whether I would join him and his accountant for a meeting the following week. He wanted to explain the finances in full and make sure I understood what had happened. He also wanted to discuss whether I might be willing to provide a small, unsecured loan from my savings, though he emphasized that he understood if I declined.

I agreed to attend the meeting, but I made the conditions clear. I would review the figures first, and I would not make a decision under pressure. Any loan would need a written agreement, a realistic repayment schedule, and terms that did not endanger my financial security.

"That's fair," he said.

I believed he meant it.

The meeting took place in his accountant's office on Wednesday afternoon. The accountant walked us through the balance sheet, the outstanding invoices, the credit facility, and the proposed reductions in operating costs. Robert listened carefully, asking questions about which projects were profitable and how much cash the company needed to remain stable over the next three months.

For the first time, I saw him confront the numbers without immediately searching for someone who could make the problem disappear.

At the end of the meeting, his accountant explained that the business could potentially survive if the customer dispute was resolved, the bank approved the restructuring plan, and expenses were reduced quickly. If those conditions failed, Robert might need to sell additional assets or close part of the operation.

Robert nodded.

"I understand."

Outside the office, he walked beside me toward the parking lot.

"I don't want you to think I'm asking you to rescue me again," he said. "I want to know whether a small loan would make sense after everything has been reviewed. If it doesn't, I'll respect that."

I looked at him.

"I'll consider it. But my answer will depend on the numbers, not on whether I love you."

He smiled sadly.

"I understand that now."

I hoped he did.

As we reached the cars, his phone rang. He checked the screen and frowned.

"It's Adrian."

He answered, listened for a moment, then asked the caller to repeat something.

"What do you mean the customer has changed the payment terms?"

His expression grew tense.

I watched him walk a few steps away.

When he returned, he looked as though the meeting had undone all the relief he had felt.

"The customer says they may not pay the disputed invoice until next month," he said. "And they've asked for additional documentation before approving the final amount."

I stood beside him in the parking lot, the late-afternoon sun reflecting off the windshields.

The bank had given him a chance, but the business still depended on money that might not arrive when he needed it.

For the first time, Robert didn't look toward me as though I might have an answer.

He looked at the ground, took a breath, and said, "I need to work out what we can survive without."

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: My Son Asked for Help Without Offering My House as Security, but the Price of That Honesty Was Higher Than He Expected

The call came on Thursday morning, three days after Robert met with the bank.
