He spent the evening preparing a written account, and I heard the printer running several times from the study. When I passed the door, he asked me not to read the pages before the meeting.

I told him I had no intention of doing so.

For once, I meant it. If Daniel was finally going to provide an account, I wanted it to be his own, recorded accurately and without another argument between us. I had no desire to help him construct a more convincing version of events.

At the meeting, Daniel appeared nervous but composed. His solicitor explained that he had advised Daniel to answer questions truthfully and to distinguish between what he personally knew and what he had learned from others.

Helen began by asking about the transfer made three days after my father's death.

Daniel confirmed that Richard Cole had contacted him that morning and instructed him to verify that the payment had been processed. He said the transfer was connected to the Mercer Street project, but he did not know the identity of the final recipient.

“Why did Richard contact you rather than the company's finance department?” Helen asked.

“Because he had used me to process some of the earlier payments. He said it was quicker.”

“Did you have authority to approve the transfer?”

“No.”

“Did you authorize it?”

“No. I was asked to confirm that it had gone through, not to approve it.”

Helen placed the payment instruction on the table.

“Did you know the money was being transferred to an account outside Northbridge's ordinary project accounts?”

Daniel studied the document.

“I knew it wasn't one of the contractor accounts. Richard said it was a temporary holding account.”

“Did he identify the account holder?”

“No.”

“Did you ask?”

Daniel hesitated.

“No.”

Helen allowed the silence to remain before moving to the next question.

She asked whether Richard had promised him anything in connection with the payment. Daniel's solicitor objected to the wording, and Helen rephrased the question to ask whether Daniel expected to receive any personal benefit from the transaction.

Daniel said he did not expect to receive money from that particular transfer. However, he acknowledged that Richard had previously promised to help him settle his debts once the property project was refinanced.

The admission changed the atmosphere in the room.

“Was that promise connected to the use of your wife's signature?” Helen asked.

Daniel's solicitor requested a short break. They stepped into the corridor, leaving Helen and me alone with the documents.

I stared at the payment instruction.

Daniel had admitted knowing about the transfer and accepting Richard's promise of financial help, but he still maintained that he had not authorized the payment. Whether that distinction would hold up under further examination remained uncertain.

Helen spoke quietly.

“His statement may be useful, but we will need corroborating evidence. We should not treat his account as conclusive simply because he has finally begun cooperating.”

I nodded.

When Daniel returned, Helen asked whether he had any communications with Richard concerning the transfer.

He said he had deleted several messages during the previous month because he was afraid the investigation would uncover his involvement. He had, however, retained some emails and believed they might still be recoverable from his old work account.

Helen instructed him to preserve any remaining records and arrange for the appropriate forensic review through his solicitor. She did not ask him to access accounts he was no longer authorized to use.

The meeting ended without a complete explanation of the payment, but Daniel had agreed to provide additional records.

Outside, he asked whether I would speak with him privately.

I considered refusing. Then I realized that there were questions I needed to ask, and that I could end the conversation whenever I chose.

We sat on a bench in a small courtyard behind the building.

“Why did you keep this from me?” I asked.

Daniel looked at the pavement.

“Because I knew how it would sound.”

“How it would sound?”

“That I had helped Richard move money, that I had used your name, and that I was expecting him to rescue me from the debt.”

“You did all those things.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you still talking as though the problem is how it sounds?”

He rubbed his hands together.

“Because I spent so long telling myself that I could fix it before you found out. Every time something went wrong, Richard promised the next payment would solve it. I kept thinking that if I admitted what had happened, I would lose everything.”

“You were already losing everything. You just made sure I would lose it with you.”

He looked at me, and for the first time, he did not argue.

I asked whether he had ever told my father that the project was in trouble.

“Yes.”

“What did Dad say?”

“He told me to stop participating in the financing until the accounts were reviewed. He said the debt in your name had to be corrected immediately.”

“And you refused?”

“I told him I needed time.”

“How much time?”

“Until the next property sale.”

I closed my eyes.

My father had given Daniel an opportunity to correct the problem, and Daniel had chosen to continue.

“He must have been devastated,” I said.

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

“He was. He told me he had trusted me because I was your husband. He said he had made a mistake by believing I would put your interests first.”

I looked away.

Those words hurt more than I expected. My father had not merely discovered a financial problem. He had discovered that the man he had welcomed into his family was willing to use his daughter's identity to protect himself.

“Did he tell you he was going to report Richard?”

“Yes. He said he would provide the accountant's findings to the authorities if the company did not account for the money.”

“Was that why you met Richard after the funeral?”

Daniel nodded.

“Richard wanted to know whether your father had left any documents that could expose the transfers. I told him I hadn't seen anything.”

“But you knew Dad kept records.”

“Yes.”

“And you knew about the original agreement.”

“Yes.”

I stood up.

“You keep asking me to understand why you did these things. I understand them. You were afraid, you wanted money, and you believed you could avoid the consequences by keeping me ignorant. What I don't understand is why you still expect me to trust you.”

Daniel remained seated.

“I don't expect that anymore,” he said. “I just want a chance to tell the truth.”

I left him in the courtyard and walked to my car.

That evening, Helen called with an update. Daniel's statement had provided a clearer timeline, but she warned me that his cooperation could be motivated by a desire to reduce his own exposure.

“We will assess the evidence, not his promises,” she said.

She had also received a response from Northbridge concerning the settlement. The company was willing to withdraw its demand under the disputed guarantee if I agreed to a narrower release, but it still refused to provide certain records relating to the transfer.

Helen intended to press for those documents.

“Why would they settle the guarantee while refusing to explain the payment?” I asked.

“They may believe the disputed signature creates a risk they would rather avoid. That does not necessarily mean the company is responsible for the missing funds. We need to keep the issues separate.”

I agreed.

The following morning, Daniel gave Helen a list of email addresses and phone numbers he had used during the project. His solicitor arranged for a technical specialist to examine the records he had lawfully retained. Several messages were recovered from an archived folder, including one sent by Richard shortly before the transfer.

The email instructed Daniel to confirm that the payment had cleared and warned him not to discuss the transaction with my father.

The message was dated before Dad died.

I read the copy Helen sent me.

Richard had written that the payment was necessary to protect the project from a dispute with another investor. He claimed that the funds would be returned once the financing was reorganized. He also stated that the arrangement must remain confidential because the company was negotiating with a potential buyer.

There was no mention of my father in the stated purpose of the transfer, yet Richard had specifically instructed Daniel not to discuss it with him.

Helen said the email raised further questions about what Daniel knew before the payment was made. It did not establish that he knew the ultimate destination or intended use of the money, but it weakened his claim that he had been unaware of the transaction's unusual nature.

I asked whether the potential buyer could be identified.

Helen said she would request the relevant records.

Before ending the call, she told me that Northbridge had proposed a date for a final settlement discussion. The company wanted to resolve the guarantee dispute before the end of the month.

I agreed to attend with her, provided the meeting did not prevent us from pursuing the accounting records.

That evening, Daniel asked whether I had heard from Helen.

“Yes.”

“Is the company going to settle the debt?”

“They've made an offer.”

He looked relieved.

I watched him carefully.

“Daniel, if they withdraw the guarantee, will you repay the money you took from our savings?”

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

“I will try.”

“That's not an answer.”

“I don't have the money right now.”

“Then tell me how much you took and where it went.”

He looked at the floor.

“I'll prepare a complete list.”

I nodded, though I no longer knew whether his promises meant anything.

As I went upstairs, I heard him return to the study and close the door.

For the first time, I understood that the marriage might not end with a single revelation or a final argument. It might end through the slow accumulation of facts, each one stripping away another excuse until nothing remained to protect.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: The Recovered Emails Revealed a Second Agreement, and the Company Had Been Waiting for My Father’s Death to Use It

Daniel agreed to meet Helen the following afternoon with his own solicitor present.
