He had been staring at the message from Richard Cole as if the name alone were enough to make him ill. When I repeated my question, he looked up, but his eyes moved immediately toward the front window.

“I don't know everything,” he said.

“Then tell me what you do know.”

He rubbed his palms against his trousers. “Richard told us the money was being used to renovate the properties. Some of it went toward contractors, materials, permits, and the interest on the original loans. That's what the accounts showed.”

“And what did Dad discover?”

Daniel hesitated. “He found payments that didn't match the work being done. Large amounts had been transferred to other companies. Richard said they were subcontractors, but your father couldn't find evidence that some of them had ever worked on the buildings.”

“Did Dad investigate those companies?”

“Yes. He hired an accountant to examine the records. After that, he stopped trusting Richard completely.”

I remembered the green notebook in my father's study, the dates and initials that had seemed meaningless when I first discovered them. I had assumed they were reminders or fragments of ordinary business. Now I wondered whether he had been recording the same payments that had alarmed him.

“Did you see the accountant's report?”

Daniel shook his head. “Your father wouldn't show it to me.”

“Because he didn't trust you?”

“Because I was already involved. He thought I might warn Richard.”

“Would you have?”

He looked at me for a long time.

“I don't know.”

The answer was honest enough to hurt. Daniel had spent years insisting that he had made mistakes because he believed he could repair them. Yet even now, when faced with a direct question about whether he would have helped conceal evidence, he could not give me a clear answer.

I gathered the documents into their envelope.

“You're going to give Helen everything,” I said. “Every email, every application, every statement. If you remember another account or another loan, you'll tell her.”

“What if she uses it against me?”

“She will use the evidence to establish what happened. What follows depends on the facts.”

He leaned forward. “Claire, if this becomes public, people will assume I planned everything from the beginning.”

“I can't control what people assume. I can only decide whether I continue helping you hide it.”

His expression collapsed. For a moment, I saw the exhaustion beneath his fear, but I no longer felt responsible for relieving it.

That night, I slept in the spare bedroom with the door locked. I heard Daniel moving around downstairs long after midnight. Once, he stopped outside my door, and I held my breath until his footsteps retreated.

In the morning, I delivered the documents to Helen. She reviewed the email from Richard, the letter my father had written, and the records of the transfers from our joint account. She made copies and arranged for the originals to be preserved.

When I showed her Richard's invitation, she immediately advised against meeting him privately.

“He may genuinely want to provide information,” she said, “but the message could also be an attempt to influence your account or obtain something from you. We have no way to verify the sender's intentions.”

“Could we arrange a meeting with legal representatives present?”

“That would be safer. I will contact the appropriate parties and determine whether he is willing to provide information formally.”

She then turned to the letter from my father.

“This is important because it shows that he objected to further borrowing before his death. We need to establish what happened after he sent it, whether Northbridge received it, and whether the company continued using his property or your name as security.”

I asked whether the letter proved that the company had acted unlawfully.

“Not by itself. But it gives us a clear line of inquiry.”

Helen explained that the disputed debt and my father's agreement might be examined separately. The debt notice involved a guarantee that I denied signing. The Mercer Street property, meanwhile, appeared to be protected by a different contract. If the company had concealed payments or misrepresented its financial position, that might explain why my father had tried to stop the arrangement, but it would not automatically resolve every claim.

I appreciated her caution. I had spent too many days being told that everything would somehow work out. I needed someone who would tell me what the evidence could establish, not what I wanted to hear.

By midday, Helen had contacted Northbridge's legal department. She requested the company's accounting records relevant to the financing agreement and asked for confirmation of the outstanding balance owed to my father.

The response was not immediate.

Instead, Victor Hale called her office and offered to attend a meeting later that week. He said Northbridge was prepared to provide additional records, but he wanted clarification about the scope of the inquiry.

Helen agreed to arrange the meeting, provided all communications were documented and the necessary representatives attended.

When I returned home, Daniel was waiting at the kitchen table with a separate envelope.

“I found something,” he said.

I did not sit down.

“What is it?”

“An old email chain. I kept it because I thought it might explain the transfers.”

He pushed the envelope toward me.

I left it unopened and called Helen. She instructed me to bring it to her office rather than review it alone. Daniel seemed disappointed that I would not immediately read what he had found, but he did not object when I took the envelope.

At Helen's office, we opened it together.

The emails showed that Richard had instructed Daniel to route several payments through intermediary companies before transferring them to the renovation accounts. The explanations varied. One payment was described as a contractor deposit; another was labeled a consulting fee. A third had no explanation beyond a reference number.

Helen asked me to identify which payments matched the withdrawals from our savings account. I compared the dates and amounts, marking the transactions that appeared to correspond.

The pattern was incomplete, but it was clear enough to raise serious questions.

Some money had gone toward genuine project expenses. Other transfers appeared to have been diverted through companies whose names I had never encountered. The records did not establish who ultimately received every payment, but they contradicted Daniel's claim that all the borrowed money had been used for the renovation.

Helen separated the emails into groups and noted the missing records.

“Your father may have been investigating the same pattern,” she said. “We need his accountant's report, if it still exists.”

I remembered the green notebook and the papers hidden in Dad's desk. Perhaps there was another record among them, something that would connect the suspicious payments to the missing money.

I decided to return to the house that afternoon and search carefully, preserving anything that might matter.

Before leaving, I asked Helen whether she had heard from Richard.

“He has agreed to provide a statement through his solicitor,” she said. “He has not agreed to an informal meeting, and I would not recommend one.”

That should have reassured me. Instead, I felt a growing unease about the message that had arrived the previous evening. If Richard was willing to communicate through lawyers, why had someone sent me an invitation to meet alone?

I drove to my father's house and went straight to the study.

The green notebook remained where I had left it. I placed it beside the desk lamp and examined each page, this time recording the entries rather than trying to interpret them from memory.

Several dates matched the transfers I had identified in the bank statements. Beside one entry, Dad had written the initials R.C. and a sum corresponding to a payment in the email chain.

Farther down the page, I found a reference to a company called Alder Consulting.

I searched the surrounding pages. The name appeared three times, always beside a payment and a date.

Then I noticed a small mark in the margin beside the final entry. It looked like a reference to a file number, followed by the words original ledger.

I photographed the page and sent the image to Helen.

Her reply arrived within minutes.

Do not remove anything from the house until we have discussed it. Please check whether your father kept a separate account of the payments, but preserve the documents exactly as you find them.

I continued searching the desk, moving slowly through the drawers and checking each folder before putting it back. Beneath a stack of property tax records, I found a narrow envelope addressed to my father by an accounting firm.

The envelope had been opened, but its contents were missing.

Inside the flap, someone had written a date and a short note.

Final review—copies withheld pending authorization.

I called the accounting firm listed on the envelope. The receptionist asked me to provide the account reference, then placed me on hold.

When she returned, she explained that the firm could not release confidential records without verifying my authority to act for the estate. She took my details and promised to refer the request to the partner responsible for archived files.

I left my father's house after sunset, carrying only photographs of the pages and the empty envelope's details in my notebook.

On the drive home, my phone rang from an unknown number.

I let it ring twice before answering.

“Claire Bennett?” a man asked.

“Yes.”

“My name is Martin Shaw. I was your father's accountant.”

I pulled into a parking space beside the road.

“I've been trying to reach someone from the family,” he continued. “I understand you've started asking questions about the Northbridge agreement.”

“How do you know that?”

“Your solicitor contacted the firm. I reviewed the archived file this afternoon.”

I gripped the steering wheel.

“Did you prepare a report for my father?”

“Yes,” Martin said. “And before you ask, the final report was never delivered to him.”

“Why not?”

There was a pause.

“Because the records revealed something we believed required further verification. Your father wanted us to finish the review, but someone instructed the firm to suspend the work.”

“Who?”

Martin lowered his voice.

“The authorization came from a person who claimed to represent the company. But the instruction was unusual, and I never accepted that it gave them the right to stop your father's review.”

I looked out at the dark road.

“Do you still have the report?”

“I have a working copy of the findings. I won't send it without the proper authorization, but I am prepared to speak with your solicitor.”

“Can you tell me what you found?”

He hesitated.

“Your father was right to question the payments. The missing money wasn't simply the result of a failed renovation.”

My mouth went dry.

“What was it, then?”

“I can't responsibly answer that until the records are reviewed in full. But there is one thing you should understand, Claire. The accounting discrepancies were not confined to Northbridge's project expenses.”

He paused again.

“Some of the transfers appear to have been made through an account associated with your husband.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Accountant’s Missing Report Exposed a Second Trail of Transfers That Daniel Had Never Mentioned

“Where was the money going?” I asked.
