She asked whether anyone other than Daniel knew about our visit to Northbridge, and I told her that Victor Hale and the records clerk had been present.

“Did you tell Daniel where you were going?”

“No.”

“Did you tell anyone else?”

“Only you.”

She made a note of the message and recommended that I avoid meeting anyone connected to the company alone. If further contact arrived, I was to preserve it rather than answer.

I agreed, but the warning followed me throughout the day.

At work, I caught myself staring at the entrance whenever someone walked past the glass doors. During lunch, I checked my phone repeatedly, expecting another message. None came.

By late afternoon, I had convinced myself that the sender might have been attempting to frighten me into abandoning the investigation. That possibility did not make me feel safer. It simply meant that someone believed there was enough at stake to make intimidation worthwhile.

I returned home just before six.

Daniel was waiting in the living room. He stood when I entered, and I noticed that he had shaved and changed into a clean shirt. He looked as though he had prepared what he wanted to say.

“Where were you today?” he asked.

I set down my bag.

“Why?”

“Because I received a call from someone at Northbridge.”

I said nothing.

“They told me you had been asking about the old agreement.”

I felt my pulse quicken. “Who called you?”

“Victor Hale.”

“What did he say?”

“That you've made things difficult.”

I almost laughed at the absurdity of it. My name had been attached to a debt without my permission, and now my attempt to understand the arrangement was being described as a problem.

“What exactly did Victor tell you?”

Daniel hesitated.

“He said the company would review the documents. He also said I should speak to you before this becomes a legal dispute.”

“Why would he tell you that?”

“Because I was involved in the original investment.”

“And because you forged my signature.”

Daniel's face tightened.

“Don't say that as though the whole story has been decided.”

“You admitted it.”

“I admitted that I signed some forms without your permission. I didn't say I intended to cause you harm.”

I stared at him.

“Does the distinction make you feel better?”

He sat down and rubbed his hands together.

“I spoke to a lawyer today.”

That surprised me.

“Your own lawyer?”

“Yes.”

“What did they tell you?”

“That the debt could become a serious problem if the company decides to pursue it.”

I waited for him to continue.

“They also said the agreement your father signed might affect the property. I need to understand what it says before I can decide what to do.”

“You could have asked Dad when he was alive.”

“He wouldn't have trusted me.”

“Perhaps he had a reason.”

Daniel flinched as though I had struck him.

For a moment, I felt a trace of pity. I remembered the man I had married, the one who used to bring home takeaway meals when I worked late and who sat beside me in the hospital when my mother died. Those memories were real, but so were the forged signatures and the hidden debt.

I could not use the good years to excuse what he had done during the bad ones.

“I need you to tell me everything,” I said. “Not the version that makes you look careless. Not the version that makes you sound like a victim. Everything.”

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“The original investment wasn't supposed to involve you at all,” he said. “Your father was the one who introduced me to the financing arrangement. He knew I was struggling, and he believed the property deal would give me a way out.”

I felt anger rise again.

“You told me earlier that you approached him.”

“I did. But he introduced me to Victor's business partner, a man named Richard Cole. Richard handled the financing. He explained that the money would be released quickly if the guarantors signed the necessary forms.”

“Guarantors?”

Daniel nodded.

“Your father signed a separate agreement to protect the property. I signed the loan documents. Then Richard said the company needed another guarantee because the project was larger than expected.”

“And you used my name.”

“Yes.”

“Did Richard know?”

Daniel hesitated too long.

“I think so.”

“You think so?”

“He knew the documents were being prepared. I told him you had agreed to help.”

“But I hadn't.”

“I know.”

I stood and walked to the window. A neighbor was watering plants on a balcony across the street, apparently unaware that the foundations of my marriage were collapsing a few meters away.

“Did Dad know about Richard Cole?”

“Yes. They argued about him.”

“When?”

“After the company missed its first repayment deadline. Your father believed Richard had misrepresented the financial position. He wanted the original documents reviewed.”

“And what did you do?”

“I tried to keep the deal alive. I thought if the project succeeded, everyone would get their money back.”

“You chose the company over your own family.”

“I chose what I thought was the only way out.”

I turned around.

“That isn't the same thing.”

Daniel lowered his head.

He admitted that he had made several transfers from our savings account to cover expenses associated with the investment. He had also taken out additional credit in my name after the first property failed to sell. He claimed he had intended to reverse the transactions before I noticed them, but the debt had grown faster than he could repay it.

When I asked whether he had used my identity for any other loans, he said he did not know.

That answer frightened me more than another confession would have.

I told him I needed copies of every document he possessed. He agreed, but asked me not to give anything to Helen until he had spoken with his lawyer.

“I won't destroy evidence to protect you,” I said.

“I'm not asking you to destroy anything.”

“Then give me the documents.”

He went upstairs and returned with a thick folder. Inside were loan applications, bank statements, printed emails, and correspondence from Northbridge. Several pages carried my name, and at least two appeared to contain signatures I had never made.

I photographed the documents and placed them in a separate envelope. Daniel watched without speaking.

At the bottom of the folder, I found an email printed on ordinary paper. It was from Richard Cole to Daniel, dated several months before my father entered the hospital.

The message referred to an outstanding guarantee and instructed Daniel to obtain an updated signature before the next review.

A handwritten note had been added in the margin.

Claire doesn't know. Keep it that way until the funds clear.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you write this?”

He shook his head.

“Richard did. He sent it with the paperwork.”

“Why did you keep it?”

“I thought it might help explain the timeline if there was a dispute.”

“You kept evidence that you knew I was being deceived.”

“I didn't think it would come to this.”

I slipped the email into the envelope.

Then I noticed another page beneath it. It was a brief letter from my father to Richard Cole, written in a firm hand.

The letter stated that he did not consent to any further borrowing secured against the Mercer Street property. It demanded a full accounting of the funds already transferred and warned that any attempt to attach additional liabilities to my name would be challenged.

The date was two weeks before Dad's first hospital admission.

I read the letter aloud.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Why didn't you tell me he had written this?”

“Because I was afraid you'd realize how bad it was.”

“Dad was trying to stop it.”

“Yes.”

“And you continued.”

He did not answer.

I placed the letter with the other documents and called Helen. She asked me to bring the folder to her office the following morning and warned me not to remove or alter the originals.

Before I could end the call, my phone vibrated again.

This time, the message contained a name and a telephone number.

Richard Cole.

Beneath it was a single sentence.

If you want to know why your father never received his money, meet me tomorrow at noon. Come alone.

I read the message twice.

Helen heard the change in my breathing.

“What happened?” she asked.

I told her.

“Do not meet him alone,” she said immediately. “We don't know who sent that message or what he intends. Forward it to me, and we will decide how to respond through proper channels.”

I agreed, but I could not stop thinking about the invitation.

Richard Cole was the man who had helped arrange the financing. He was also the person who had apparently instructed Daniel to keep me ignorant until the funds cleared.

If he knew why my father had failed to recover his money, he might hold the missing piece of the story.

I forwarded the message to Helen, then placed my phone facedown on the table.

Daniel was watching me.

“Who was that?” he asked.

“Someone who knows what happened.”

His face drained of color.

“Claire, whatever he tells you, don't believe him.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at the folder containing the forged signatures, the debt notices, and my father's final attempt to stop the scheme.

“Because Richard Cole never tells the truth when telling it might cost him something.”

I studied my husband, wondering how much he knew about the man he had trusted with our future.

Then Daniel added a sentence that changed the meaning of the entire investigation.

“Your father didn't just lose money to Richard. He discovered where the money was really going.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: My Husband Revealed What My Father Had Discovered, and Suddenly the Missing Money Was Only Part of the Betrayal

Helen advised me to treat the anonymous message as a warning rather than a proven threat.
