She did not tell the company that we possessed a brass key or that my father had left written instructions. She simply requested access to any records in which I was named as a guarantor or beneficiary of an agreement associated with the Mercer Street property.

The company responded that it could not release confidential documents without verification of my identity and legal authority.

Helen prepared the necessary forms, and we arranged to attend the office together.

The building stood in a commercial district where glass towers reflected the pale morning sky. Its entrance was marked by a discreet metal sign, and the reception desk was staffed by a woman who asked us to wait while she contacted the legal department.

I had imagined the visit many times during the previous night. In those imagined versions, I marched inside and demanded to see the contract. In reality, my hands were cold, and I kept checking that the envelope containing my father's letter was still in my bag.

A man in a charcoal suit appeared at the reception desk.

He introduced himself as Victor Hale.

He was older than Daniel, with carefully combed gray hair and a watch that seemed more expensive than our car. His manner was courteous, but when Helen explained the purpose of our visit, he looked at me with an intensity that made me uncomfortable.

“Claire Bennett,” he said. “Your father spoke of you.”

I had not given him my surname until Helen introduced us.

“Did he?”

“Thomas was a cautious man. He preferred written agreements to verbal assurances.”

“Then you should have no difficulty showing us the agreement he left behind.”

Victor's smile thinned.

“Of course. We will need to establish which document you're referring to.”

Helen handed him a formal request.

He read it slowly, then invited us into a conference room.

The room contained a long table, a wall-mounted screen, and a cabinet filled with neatly labeled binders. Victor offered us water, which I declined. Helen placed a copy of the disputed contract on the table and asked whether Northbridge recognized it.

Victor examined the page.

“This appears to be part of a financing arrangement,” he said. “However, the copy is incomplete.”

“Is the original held here?” Helen asked.

“I would need to check.”

Helen explained that my father had left instructions referring to a secured deposit box and a key numbered 614. Victor's expression changed almost imperceptibly.

“You have the key?”

I took it from my bag and placed it on the table.

He did not touch it.

“I see.”

“Can you tell us what it opens?” I asked.

“There are several archival systems in use. The number alone may not be sufficient.”

Helen leaned forward. “Then perhaps you can have the records department verify it.”

Victor excused himself and left the room.

I watched the door close behind him.

“He recognized the number,” I whispered.

“Possibly,” Helen replied. “But we will wait for a verifiable answer.”

When Victor returned, he carried a thin folder. He said the key corresponded to an archival deposit box maintained by the company's former legal department. The box contained records associated with an agreement signed by my father several years earlier.

“Why wasn't this document included in the public filing?” Helen asked.

“Because it was a private agreement between the parties.”

“Does the agreement affect the company's rights to the Mercer Street property?”

Victor paused.

“That depends on how you interpret certain provisions.”

“Then we will need to read it.”

He studied me for a moment.

“Your father was concerned about the possibility of the company becoming insolvent. He wanted to make certain that his family's interests were protected.”

“My father's family includes me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why does a debt collector claim I owe nearly three hundred thousand dollars?”

Victor glanced at the copy of the disputed contract.

“That is a separate matter.”

“Not if the same company is involved.”

Helen interrupted before I could say more. She reminded Victor that we were there to obtain the original agreement and that any dispute over the debt would be addressed separately.

He agreed to have the archival box brought upstairs.

While we waited, I examined the framed photographs on the conference room wall. One showed a group of men standing outside a newly renovated building. Another depicted Victor shaking hands with a local official. I wondered whether Daniel had ever stood in this room, perhaps believing that a successful investment would make him rich enough to escape the ordinary limits of our life.

A records clerk arrived carrying a sealed container.

Victor unlocked it with a key from his own ring. Inside were several envelopes, a bound contract, and a smaller packet secured with a paper band.

The contract bore my father's signature.

Helen examined the pages carefully before allowing me to read them.

The agreement stated that my father had provided financing for the renovation of the Mercer Street property. In return, Northbridge had agreed to repay the loan under specific conditions. A separate clause required the company to release its claim against the building once the outstanding balance was settled.

But there was more.

The final section contained a provision establishing that certain assets connected to the agreement could not be transferred to a third party without written consent from my father or his designated beneficiary.

My name appeared beneath that clause.

I read it twice.

“What does this mean?” I asked.

Helen pointed to the relevant paragraph. “It means your father may have arranged for you to receive a specific right under the agreement. We need to confirm the full legal effect, but the company cannot simply ignore this provision.”

Victor folded his hands.

“Your father was very particular about that clause.”

“Why?”

“He believed that family assets should not be used to cover unrelated liabilities.”

I thought of Daniel's forged signature and the debt notice.

“Did he know my husband had borrowed money using my name?”

Victor's eyes moved toward Helen.

“I cannot discuss another person's financial affairs without appropriate authorization.”

“That isn't a denial.”

“No,” he said. “It isn't.”

Helen asked for copies of the complete agreement and the records showing its execution. Victor agreed to provide them, subject to verification and the company's document-handling procedures.

Before we left, I asked whether there were any other records associated with my father.

Victor looked at the smaller packet in the container.

“There is one additional document.”

He removed it and placed it on the table.

It was an acknowledgment signed by my father, confirming that I was to receive notice if Northbridge attempted to enforce any claim affecting the Mercer Street property.

The date was less than a month before his death.

I felt my throat tighten.

Dad had known he might not be alive when the company came looking for payment. He had made arrangements to ensure that I would be informed, even if he could not explain the situation himself.

“Why wasn't I notified?” I asked.

Victor's expression became guarded.

“The company has not initiated enforcement against the property.”

“Then why did I receive a debt notice?”

“That notice appears to concern a separate guarantee.”

Helen collected the copies and placed them in her folder.

“We will review the documents before drawing conclusions,” she said.

Victor nodded, but his attention remained fixed on me.

“Your father wanted you to understand that the agreement was intended to protect you. He did not want you to inherit an obligation you had never knowingly accepted.”

The sentence made my skin prickle.

“Did he know my signature had been forged?”

Victor did not answer directly.

“He was aware of irregularities in the financing documents.”

“By whom?”

He glanced at Helen again.

“I believe that question should be addressed through the appropriate legal process.”

Outside the building, I stood on the pavement and watched people hurry past with briefcases and paper cups. I had expected the visit to provide certainty. Instead, it had given me a more complicated picture of my father, Daniel, and the company that connected them.

Helen told me the agreement was promising but warned me not to treat it as proof that the debt would disappear.

“We have evidence that your father intended to protect the property,” she said. “We also have evidence that your husband may have created a separate obligation in your name. Those are related facts, but they are not necessarily the same legal issue.”

I understood.

The original agreement might save my father's building, but it would not erase what Daniel had done.

As we reached the car park, my phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

You should not have opened the box. Your father knew what would happen if you did.

I showed it to Helen.

She read the message and asked me not to respond. She advised me to preserve a screenshot, record the time, and forward it to her.

I looked back toward the office building.

Someone knew we had found the agreement, and whoever had sent the message wanted me to believe that my father had been afraid of the truth.

For the first time, I wondered whether the danger lay not only in the money Daniel had borrowed, but also in the people who had helped him obtain it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: An Anonymous Warning Led Me to a Missing Set of Records, and the Person Who Held Them Knew My Husband’s Secret

Helen arranged an appointment with Northbridge Holdings through its registered office.
