The temptation to tear it open at the next traffic light was almost unbearable, but I remembered the final words Dad had written on the front.

Open this alone.

By the time I reached home, Daniel's car was in the driveway. I considered going somewhere else, perhaps back to my father's house, but I could not bear the thought of carrying the envelope around for another night.

I went directly to the spare bedroom, locked the door, and sat on the edge of the bed.

The tape came away slowly. Inside were three sheets of paper, a small brass key, and a photograph of my father standing beside a man I recognized immediately.

The man in the photograph was Daniel.

They were outside a brick building with a sign above the entrance. The picture had been taken several years earlier, long before Dad's health began to fail. Daniel wore a suit I remembered from our second wedding anniversary dinner. My father stood beside him with one hand resting on his shoulder, but neither man was smiling.

I turned the photograph over.

Dad had written a date on the back, followed by a name: Northbridge.

My mouth went dry.

The first sheet was a letter addressed to me. It was dated six weeks before his death.

My dear Claire, it began.

If you are reading this, I have run out of time to explain things properly. I wanted to speak to you face-to-face, but I was afraid that telling you everything at once would cause more harm than good. That was a coward's decision, and I am sorry.

I stopped reading and pressed the paper against my knee.

Dad had always believed that protecting someone meant carrying their burdens without telling them what those burdens were. When I was a child, he hid the seriousness of my mother's illness until the doctors said there was nothing more they could do. He told me afterward that he wanted me to remember the good days.

I had loved him for that.

I had also spent years wondering whether the truth might have helped me prepare.

The letter continued.

Several years ago, I lent money to a business venture because I believed I was helping someone I trusted. The money was supposed to be repaid from the sale of a property. Instead, the company became entangled in debts, and documents were signed that I did not authorize. Your name appears in those documents. I do not know how much you have been told.

My fingers tightened around the paper.

I read the paragraph again.

Your name appears in those documents.

The next sheet was a copy of a business agreement. Several pages were missing, but the visible section included a reference to Northbridge Holdings and a sum of money far larger than any debt Daniel had ever admitted to me. Near the bottom was a signature that looked like mine.

I recognized the shape of the C and the long tail of the final e.

But I had never signed that document.

The date printed above the signature was nearly three years old. At that time, I had been working long hours at the medical supply company and helping my father arrange repairs to his roof. Daniel had told me he was negotiating a loan to consolidate his credit card balances. He had brought home a thick stack of forms one evening, saying that the bank needed my income details because we shared the mortgage.

I remembered signing several pages without reading every line.

The memory made me feel sick.

The final sheet in the envelope contained only a few sentences.

Do not sign a new agreement until you have spoken to an independent solicitor. The original contract is kept in a secure file at Northbridge's registered office. The key opens a deposit box there. If they claim the box does not exist, ask them to check the number stamped beneath the handle.

Dad had added the number 614.

At the bottom of the page, he had written one final line.

Daniel believes the money will solve his problems. He does not understand what he has put in your name.

I sat motionless, listening to the distant sound of a cupboard closing downstairs.

The house was so quiet that I could hear my own breathing. My father had known something about my husband, something serious enough to make him leave an envelope with a neighbor rather than trust it to his own daughter.

I wanted to reject the evidence. I wanted the signature to belong to another Claire, the photograph to have an innocent explanation, and the letter to be the result of an old man's confusion.

But the signature was mine.

The brass key lay in my palm. It was heavier than it looked, with a small number stamped into its head.

614\\.

I put everything back into the envelope and slipped it beneath a stack of sweaters in the bottom drawer. Then I washed my face, waited several minutes, and went downstairs.

Daniel was preparing dinner.

“Where have you been?” he asked.

“Mrs. Alvarez's.”

He paused with a knife in his hand. “Why?”

“She wanted to give me something Dad left with her.”

The knife stopped moving.

“What did she give you?”

I watched him carefully. “An envelope.”

His eyes flicked toward my handbag.

“What's in it?”

“Some papers.”

He placed the knife on the chopping board. “Claire, if your father left legal documents with a neighbor, we need to handle this properly.”

“We?”

“Please don't start again.”

I leaned against the counter. “Do you know anything about Northbridge Holdings?”

His face went blank for a fraction of a second before he recovered.

“Why are you asking me that?”

“Dad mentioned it.”

Daniel turned back to the vegetables. “Your father was involved in a lot of things. He never told me much.”

I thought about the photograph of them standing together outside the brick building.

“Then how do you explain this?”

I had brought the photograph downstairs without realizing I still held it. I placed it on the counter between us.

Daniel stared at it.

For a moment, he looked genuinely frightened. Then he picked up the photograph, turned it over, and set it down again.

“That was a business meeting,” he said.

“With Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because it was years ago.”

“What business?”

He rubbed his forehead. “Your father wanted to invest in something. I introduced him to a man I knew. It didn't work out.”

“What didn't work out?”

“The company lost money.”

“How much?”

Daniel looked at me, and I saw a flash of anger beneath the fear.

“Why are you interrogating me?”

“Because Dad left me a letter saying my name was on a contract I never signed.”

He went still.

I had not meant to reveal that much, but the words were already between us.

Daniel set down the photograph with exaggerated care.

“Your father was ill,” he said. “He was taking medication. He could have misunderstood what he was looking at.”

“The signature looks like mine.”

“Then perhaps you signed it and forgot.”

“I didn't.”

“You've signed hundreds of documents over the years.”

“Not a business agreement with Northbridge Holdings.”

He stepped closer. “Listen to me. If there is a financial problem, we can resolve it. We don't need to panic or start accusing people.”

“Who said anything about accusing people?”

“You're looking at me as though I've committed a crime.”

I wanted to tell him about the key, but something in his expression stopped me. He was no longer asking questions. He was trying to discover how much I knew.

“I have an appointment with Dad's lawyer tomorrow,” I said.

Daniel's shoulders relaxed slightly.

“Good. Let him explain the documents.”

“An independent solicitor,” I added.

His expression tightened again.

“Why independent?”

“Because Dad specifically told me to speak to one.”

Daniel looked away.

That night, he went to bed early. I stayed downstairs until the house had settled, then retrieved the envelope from the spare bedroom. I photographed every page with my phone and sent the images to an email account Daniel had never used.

At seven the following morning, I called an independent solicitor named Helen Ward, whose office had been recommended by a colleague. I explained that I had discovered a contract bearing a disputed signature and wanted advice before contacting the company involved.

Helen listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she asked me to bring the original documents and the envelope.

“Do not contact the company yet,” she said. “And do not sign anything your husband gives you.”

I swallowed.

“Why would my husband give me anything to sign?”

“I don't know,” Helen replied. “But if the documents are what you describe, someone may already be preparing for your father's estate to be settled.”

I glanced toward the kitchen, where Daniel's coffee cup stood beside the fruit bowl.

“What should I do now?”

“Bring me the papers. We will find out what they mean before anyone else gets the chance to explain them to you.”

I agreed to meet her that afternoon.

As I ended the call, I noticed a message from Daniel on my phone.

He had left for an appointment and said he would be back by lunchtime.

A second message arrived a moment later.

Please leave your father's paperwork alone until we talk.

I had not told him where I was going.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Lawyer Found a Debt in My Name, and Then My Husband Arrived With Papers He Expected Me to Sign

I did not open the envelope at Mrs. Alvarez's house.
