What did you find?”

I looked down at the green notebook. My first instinct was to tell him everything, because that was what I had always done. We had shared a home for eleven years. I had trusted him with my fears, my bank details, my mother's jewelry, and the passwords to accounts I barely understood.

But the way he had asked where I found the name made me hesitate.

“Some old notes,” I said. “Nothing clear.”

“Bring them home. I'll help you sort through everything.”

“I think I'll leave the documents here for now.”

“Why?”

“Because I'm not finished looking.”

He laughed without amusement. “You're acting like I'm a stranger.”

I had no answer that would not start an argument, so I told him I would call later and ended the conversation.

For several minutes, I remained at my father's desk, listening to the silence in the house. The notebook seemed ordinary in every respect except for the last page. Dad had underlined the word original twice, and beneath the sentence he had written a date that was less than two weeks before he entered the hospital.

I searched the drawers again but found nothing that explained the company or the agreement.

Near sunset, I locked the house and drove home.

Daniel was in the living room when I arrived. His resignation letter lay on the coffee table beside a glossy travel brochure. He had changed into a clean sweater and opened a bottle of wine, although he usually waited until Friday to drink.

“Did you find anything else?” he asked.

“No.”

He studied my face. “You're sure?”

“Why do you keep asking me that?”

“Because this is important.”

“To whom?”

He set his glass down. “To both of us. Your father was my family, too.”

The remark unsettled me because it sounded rehearsed. My father had tolerated Daniel, and there had been good years when the two of them spent entire afternoons repairing the garden fence or watching football together. But their relationship had deteriorated during the previous year, after Dad questioned Daniel about a loan he had asked me to take out.

Daniel insisted the loan was for home improvements. Dad discovered that part of the money had gone toward settling an old debt Daniel had never mentioned to me.

They had argued in the driveway. My father had told Daniel that a marriage could survive almost anything except the deliberate concealment of a truth that changed the other person's life.

Daniel had never forgiven him for saying it.

“Dad wasn't your family in the same way he was mine,” I said quietly.

His jaw tightened. “I see.”

He picked up the brochure and began talking about a resort he had found online. The rooms overlooked the sea, and the package included meals and airport transfers. He wanted to leave within a month, before the weather changed.

I asked how much it cost.

“Not that much.”

“How much?”

He turned the brochure toward me. The total for two weeks was more than I earned in six weeks.

“We can afford it,” he said.

“Not on my salary.”

“Not on your salary alone.”

I felt the room grow still around us.

“You keep talking as though the inheritance has already arrived.”

“Your father had money, Claire.”

“Then why don't we wait until we know how much there is?”

“Because we don't need to live like this anymore.”

He spread his hands toward the room. Our furniture was old but comfortable. The television was several years out of date, and the kitchen needed new cabinets, but we had never gone without food or a warm place to sleep. We were not wealthy, but we had managed.

Daniel had begun treating our ordinary life as an insult.

“I'll speak to the lawyer tomorrow,” I said.

His expression hardened. “What for?”

“To understand the estate.”

“I can handle that.”

“No. It's my inheritance. I'll handle it.”

The words seemed to surprise both of us.

He stood and walked toward the kitchen, taking his wine with him. “Fine. Do whatever you want.”

That night, I lay awake beside him and listened to the clock on the bedside table. Sometime after midnight, his phone vibrated on the dresser. He got out of bed, picked it up, and walked into the hallway.

I could not hear the conversation clearly, but I heard him say, “She found the book.”

My eyes opened.

There was a pause.

“No, she doesn't know what it means yet.”

Another pause, longer this time.

“I told you I'd deal with it.”

He returned a few minutes later and placed the phone facedown on the dresser. When he climbed into bed, I kept my eyes closed.

In the morning, I called the lawyer whose name appeared on the funeral paperwork. His receptionist arranged an appointment for the following afternoon and asked me to bring identification and any documents my father had left.

I spent the rest of the day at work, struggling to concentrate on invoices and delivery records. Twice, I entered the wrong figures into a spreadsheet. During lunch, I searched Northbridge Holdings on my phone and found a company registration listing, but the available information told me little beyond the fact that the company had been established several years earlier.

Its registered address was a private office building across town.

I wrote the address on a scrap of paper and put it inside my wallet.

When I returned home, Daniel was on the phone again. He ended the call when I entered the kitchen.

“Who was that?” I asked.

“A former colleague.”

“From your old job?”

He nodded.

“Are you looking for another position?”

His expression changed. “I thought we agreed I didn't need one.”

“We didn't agree to anything.”

He pushed his chair back. “You know what your problem is? You can't accept that something good might happen without finding a reason to be afraid.”

I put my bag on the counter. “You quit your job before we knew what Dad had left me. You want to spend money we haven't received. And now you're asking about documents you claim not to understand.”

“I'm trying to make a plan.”

“Then make one based on what we actually have.”

For a moment, I thought he might shout. Instead, he smiled in a way that reminded me of someone trying to control his temper in public.

“Fine. Go to your meeting tomorrow. Ask your questions. But don't let a lawyer frighten you into thinking the world is full of people waiting to cheat you.”

He went upstairs.

I waited until I heard the shower running before taking my wallet from my bag. The scrap of paper with the company address was still there. Beside it, I had written the sentence from Dad's notebook.

Read the original agreement.

I called Mrs. Alvarez and asked whether she remembered when the man in the blue car had visited.

“Let me think,” she said. “The first time was early last month. The second was the following week. Your father was already having trouble walking.”

“Did the man leave anything behind?”

There was a pause.

“Actually, yes. Your father came to my door the morning after the second visit. He gave me an envelope and asked me to keep it somewhere safe.”

My heart began beating harder.

“What was inside?”

“I didn't open it. He told me it was private and that I should give it to you if anything happened to him.”

I gripped the edge of the counter.

“Do you still have it?”

“Of course. I thought you would come for it after the funeral, but I didn't want to intrude.”

I thanked her and asked if I could collect it immediately.

Five minutes later, I was standing in her hallway while she unlocked a small wooden cabinet. From behind a stack of folded tablecloths, she removed a plain brown envelope sealed with clear tape.

My name was written across the front in my father's unmistakable handwriting.

Beneath it, in smaller letters, he had added a warning.

Claire—open this alone.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: Inside the Envelope Was a Contract My Father Had Hidden, Along With a Warning About the Man I Married

The silence lasted long enough for me to hear the refrigerator humming behind me. “Daniel?” “It's probably nothing,” he said. “Some company your father dealt with years ago.” “You know …

[1

post-33802","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-insightdrama
["GET
