The request made no allegation of wrongdoing. It simply explained that the information was relevant to understanding the historical records.

Vanessa did not respond for three days.

During that time, Margaret kept herself occupied with preparations for the lottery claim. The authority had requested one final set of identification documents, and she arranged an appointment to submit them. She also met with a financial adviser recommended by Helen, who explained how a major prize could be managed without making sudden decisions about property or family support.

Margaret was relieved to speak with someone who treated the money as a practical matter rather than a miracle. The adviser discussed taxes, account security, long-term expenses, and the importance of preserving enough capital to support Margaret's future plans.

“You don't need to decide today what your life will look like in five years,” he told her. “You need to make sure that today's choices don't take away tomorrow's options.”

Margaret wrote the sentence in her notebook.

It expressed what she had been trying to tell Daniel for weeks. Her home was not merely a valuable asset on a property assessment. It was the place where she had lived with Peter, raised her son, and built a life that remained meaningful after bereavement. If she chose to leave it, that choice should come from her own wishes, not from someone else's financial calculations.

On Thursday afternoon, Vanessa finally sent a written response to Helen. The lawyer called Margaret and asked her to come to the office to review it.

Vanessa's account was brief. She said she had found Peter's letter while sorting documents after his funeral and had kept it because she did not understand its significance. Months later, she had asked an acquaintance for general advice about old financial records. The acquaintance had suggested that she determine whether the account had been closed.

The acquaintance's name was Richard Cole.

Margaret did not recognize it.

“Who is he?” she asked.

Helen explained that Vanessa had described Richard as a former colleague of Daniel's who now worked in financial administration. He had not been directly involved in the original transaction, according to Vanessa, but he had offered to help identify the relevant company records.

“Did she say when she spoke to him?” Margaret asked.

“She says it was approximately two months ago.”

That matched the period when Martin had received an inquiry about Peter's records.

Helen continued reading. Vanessa said Richard had asked whether the family still owned the house and whether Peter had left any documents relating to the property investment. She claimed she had provided only the company name and a copy of the letter, not the original.

Margaret looked up.

“She gave a stranger a copy of Peter's letter?”

“Apparently.”

“Why?”

“According to her statement, she believed he could help establish whether there was any outstanding liability.”

Margaret felt anger rise, but she held it in check.

“Did she tell him about the ledger?”

“She says she mentioned that Peter had referred to original records, but she did not know where they were.”

Helen placed the statement on the desk.

“There's one more point. Vanessa says Richard told her that the account might have been connected to a family trust or a temporary holding arrangement. He suggested that the family should avoid making any property decisions until the matter was clarified.”

Margaret frowned.

“Then why did she continue discussing a sale?”

“That's a question we should ask her.”

The statement raised more questions than it answered. Richard Cole had appeared in the story only after the old records resurfaced, and Vanessa's contact with him overlapped with the inquiries about Margaret's home. He might have been a helpful acquaintance who had offered careless advice. He might have known something about the old account. At present, there was no evidence to establish either conclusion.

Helen recommended that they verify Richard's identity and professional background before deciding whether to contact him. Margaret agreed.

That evening, Daniel called and asked whether his mother had seen Vanessa's statement.

“Yes,” Margaret said.

“She's worried that you're going to blame her for everything.”

“I'm not blaming her for everything. I'm asking her to explain what she did.”

“She was trying to help.”

“Perhaps. But she gave Peter's private letter to someone I don't know, and she continued making plans about my house without consulting me.”

Daniel sighed.

“I know the house issue was wrong.”

“Then why do you keep defending it?”

“Because I don't want you to think Vanessa is a bad person.”

Margaret felt a pang of sadness. Daniel was still trying to protect his wife from judgment, even when the facts required uncomfortable questions.

“I don't need to decide whether Vanessa is good or bad,” she said. “I need to know what happened.”

He was quiet.

“Richard Cole,” Margaret continued. “Do you know him?”

“Yes. We worked at the same company for a few years. He left before Vanessa and I married.”

“Did you ever discuss your father's business records with him?”

“No.”

“Did he know about the account?”

“I don't know.”

“Did he contact you?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Once, a few weeks ago. He asked whether I knew anything about an old property transaction involving Dad. I told him I didn't remember much.”

Margaret sat straighter.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I thought it was just an inquiry. Richard said he was helping someone understand old financial records. He didn't say Vanessa had spoken to him.”

“What else did he ask?”

“He wanted to know whether Dad had kept original documents. I told him Dad kept everything, but I didn't know where it was.”

Margaret made a note.

“Did he ask about the house?”

“No. Not directly.”

The answer was carefully qualified.

“Daniel, if you remember anything else, you need to tell Helen. You don't have to interpret it. Just give her the facts.”

“I will.”

After the call, Margaret searched her own records for the name Richard Cole. She found nothing. She did not search through Daniel's private belongings or attempt to access his accounts. Instead, she asked Helen to verify the information through ordinary professional channels.

The next day, the lawyer confirmed that Richard had worked in financial administration but was no longer registered with the firm Vanessa had named. His current employment was unclear. Helen left a message asking him to contact her about a historical business record.

He returned the call that afternoon.

Richard said he had offered Vanessa informal advice after she mentioned Peter's letter. He denied conducting any investigation on her behalf and said he had not received any payment. He also denied knowing the full details of the account.

However, he admitted that he had searched public records for the dissolved company and discovered references to a property transaction involving Arthur Bell.

“Why did you ask Martin whether he still held Peter's documents?” Helen asked.

Richard said he had not contacted Martin directly. He believed another person had made that inquiry, but he did not know who.

The answer did not resolve the issue. It suggested that more than one person might have been trying to trace the old records.

Helen asked Richard to provide a written account of his communications with Vanessa. He agreed, although he warned that he had not kept copies of every message.

When Margaret heard the report, she felt a familiar unease. The inquiry had widened from Peter and Arthur to include Daniel, Vanessa, and Richard. Yet each person seemed to know only a fragment, and each fragment arrived wrapped in a different explanation.

She wondered whether the old account had been a straightforward financial dispute that everyone had allowed to become more complicated through fear and secrecy.

Or whether someone had been deliberately moving pieces of the story out of view.

On Saturday, Margaret received a call from the lottery authority. The representative informed her that the final verification was nearly complete and that she would receive written confirmation shortly. Margaret thanked her and wrote down the expected date.

For the first time, the possible prize felt close enough to influence her thinking. She imagined the train journey she had planned, the small guesthouses, the harbors Peter had wanted to see. Then she remembered the property assessment and the conversations about her financial future.

She decided she would not tell Daniel or Vanessa the full amount until the claim was officially settled and she had reviewed her plans with Helen.

The following morning, Vanessa sent Margaret a message asking to meet alone.

Margaret agreed to speak with her by telephone first.

Vanessa sounded less confident than usual. She said she had been thinking about the past few weeks and understood why Margaret felt excluded.

“I should have asked before contacting the property company,” she admitted. “I thought I was helping Daniel prepare for the future, but I can see how it looked.”

Margaret listened without interrupting.

“Why did you want the house assessed before my birthday?” she asked.

Vanessa hesitated.

“Daniel was under a lot of pressure. We thought if we had a clear picture of the options, we could explain them to you without making everything sound frightening.”

“That still doesn't explain the timing.”

“I thought your birthday would be a good occasion to discuss a fresh start. I realize now that was a terrible idea.”

Margaret was not sure whether to believe the explanation. It sounded plausible, but it did not account for the old business letter or Richard's involvement.

“Did Richard tell you the account could be connected to the property?”

“Yes.”

“Did he tell you that selling the house might help resolve it?”

“No. He told me not to assume the house had anything to do with the account.”

“Then why did you continue making plans?”

Vanessa took a breath.

“Because I was worried about Daniel. We have debts, Margaret. I thought selling the house might give you more freedom and give us a chance to get back on our feet. I convinced myself that if we presented it as a sensible plan, you might agree.”

There it was, finally, in plain language.

Margaret felt a deep sadness, but also a kind of relief. Vanessa's actions had not been driven by a proven conspiracy. They had been driven, at least in part, by financial pressure and the belief that Margaret could be persuaded to surrender an asset that would solve several problems at once.

“That was not your decision to make,” Margaret said.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Vanessa did not answer immediately.

“I think I do now.”

Margaret ended the call politely. She did not forgive Vanessa on the spot, nor did she decide that the matter was settled. An apology was a beginning, not a substitute for accountability.

That evening, Helen called with the first official response from Richard. He had agreed to provide copies of the messages he still possessed, and one of them contained a reference to another person who had asked him about the account.

The name was not Daniel's. It was not Vanessa's.

It was Arthur Bell.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: Arthur Bell’s Name Returned After Years of Silence, Bringing Margaret Closer to the Truth Peter Had Tried to Preserve

Helen sent Vanessa a formal request for information, asking her to describe when she found Peter's letter, whether she had contacted anyone about the account, and whether she possessed any …

[1

post-33724","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-insightdrama
["GET
