She made breakfast, watered the herbs on the windowsill, and answered an email from the lottery authority requesting confirmation of her preferred method of receiving official correspondence. Each task was ordinary, yet her attention kept returning to the same sentence Daniel had spoken: Vanessa knows more about the account than I do.

At ten o'clock, Margaret called Helen Price and explained the conversation. The lawyer listened carefully, then asked whether Daniel had agreed to provide the letter voluntarily.

“He said he would speak to Vanessa and try to get it.”

“Then give him a reasonable opportunity,” Helen replied. “We should avoid turning a request for information into a confrontation. If the letter is relevant to a financial claim, we'll establish the appropriate way to obtain it.”

Margaret agreed, although patience was becoming difficult. For years, she had accepted explanations that left important questions unanswered because she believed pressing for details would only hurt the people she loved. Now she understood that silence had not necessarily protected anyone. It had simply allowed uncertainty to grow.

That afternoon, Daniel sent her a message saying he had spoken to Vanessa. They would visit the following evening, he wrote, and explain what they knew.

Margaret read the message twice before replying. She told him that she would be home and that she wanted an honest conversation, not another discussion about selling the house.

He answered with a single word: Understood.

The following evening, a little after six, the doorbell rang. Daniel stood on the step with Vanessa beside him. She held a leather handbag against her side and wore the composed expression Margaret had come to associate with conversations that had already been rehearsed.

Margaret let them in and directed them to the sitting room. She had put Peter's photograph on the mantelpiece earlier that day, partly because she wanted it there and partly because she wanted to remember the person whose decisions had brought them together.

Vanessa glanced at the photograph before sitting down.

“I understand you've been asking Daniel about a letter,” she began.

“I asked him what he knew about the account listed in the old ledger.”

“Those are two different things.”

“Perhaps. But he told me you had found a letter among Peter's papers.”

Vanessa crossed one leg over the other. “I did find some correspondence when we were helping sort things after your husband's funeral. Most of it concerned old business matters.”

“You never told me.”

“I didn't think it was important at the time.”

“Yet you kept the letter.”

“I kept several documents. I wasn't sure what to do with them.”

Margaret looked at Daniel. He sat forward with his elbows on his knees, his fingers clasped tightly together. He appeared exhausted, and she could see that he wanted the conversation to end before it had properly begun.

“Can we see the letter?” Margaret asked.

Vanessa hesitated. “I don't have it with me.”

“Where is it?”

“At home, probably. In a box with other papers.”

“Then please bring it.”

Vanessa's expression hardened. “Margaret, you need to understand that some of this correspondence involves private financial information. It may not be appropriate to circulate it without knowing exactly what it means.”

“It's my husband's correspondence, and it concerns an account bearing my son's name. I am asking to see a document you say you found.”

“You don't know what you're looking for.”

“That's why I want to read it.”

Daniel finally spoke. “Vanessa, we said we'd explain what we knew.”

“And I am explaining it,” she replied sharply. “The letter was old. We didn't understand it, and there was no reason to start digging through records that had been closed for years.”

Margaret kept her voice level. “Then why did you tell Daniel that the matter should remain private unless the original records were found?”

Vanessa's eyes moved toward Daniel.

He looked at the floor.

Margaret felt a familiar ache of disappointment, but she refused to rescue either of them from the question.

“Did you read the letter?” she asked Vanessa.

“Yes.”

“Did you understand it?”

“Not completely.”

“Did you show it to anyone else?”

Vanessa pressed her lips together before answering. “I discussed it with Daniel.”

“And did either of you contact someone about it?”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly to reassure Margaret. She did not accuse Vanessa of lying, but she noted the response in her mind.

“Will you bring me the letter tomorrow?” she asked.

Vanessa stood. “I need time to look for it.”

“How much time?”

“I don't appreciate being interrogated in your living room.”

“I'm not interrogating you. I'm asking you to produce a document that may help explain what happened to my family.”

Vanessa reached for her handbag. “We'll look for it.”

Daniel rose as well, but he did not move toward the door immediately.

“Mom, please,” he said. “We're trying to handle this.”

Margaret looked at him with a sadness that surprised her by how little anger it contained.

“You keep saying that, Daniel. But every time I ask what you're handling, you tell me I don't understand enough to ask.”

He had no answer.

After they left, Margaret returned to the sitting room and sat beneath Peter's photograph. She felt neither triumphant nor reassured. The conversation had confirmed that Vanessa possessed information she had not shared, but it had revealed nothing about the account itself.

She called Helen and described what had happened. Helen advised her to wait until the following afternoon before making another request. If Vanessa failed to produce the letter, they could ask for a written explanation and consider the next appropriate step.

Margaret agreed.

The next day passed without a message. By evening, she had almost convinced herself that Vanessa had simply forgotten. Then, shortly after eight, Daniel called.

“I found the box,” he said.

Margaret sat upright. “And the letter?”

“It's there.”

“Can you bring it?”

A pause followed.

“Vanessa doesn't want to.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Why not?”

“She thinks it could be misunderstood.”

“By whom?”

“Everyone.”

“That isn't an answer.”

Daniel sighed. “She says we should wait until we know what the account actually was.”

“We have been waiting for years without knowing. We now have the ledger. The archive has found the account reference. Your father left a letter asking whether it had been closed. What else are we supposed to wait for?”

“I don't know.”

Margaret could hear him moving around, perhaps pacing in another room.

“Mom, there is something I should tell you. Vanessa did speak to someone about the old account. I don't know exactly who. She said she was trying to find out whether anything remained unresolved.”

“When did she do that?”

“Before your birthday.”

Margaret felt the room become very still.

“Before the birthday lunch?”

“Yes.”

“Was that why you were discussing my house?”

“No. At least, I don't think so.”

“Daniel, I need you to be certain about what you're telling me.”

“I can't be certain. Vanessa said she wanted to understand Dad's papers. She was worried there might be a claim against the family.”

“Did she mention the lottery ticket?”

“No.”

Margaret did not tell him about the prize. She wanted to understand the old account on its own merits, without introducing a financial possibility that could alter every conversation.

“Can you ask her to bring the letter to Helen's office?” she said. “Your wife doesn't have to explain anything on her own. The lawyer can review it and tell us what it means.”

Daniel agreed to ask.

The following morning, Helen received a message from Vanessa. She was willing to arrange a review of the correspondence but did not want to surrender the original document. Helen proposed that Vanessa bring it to the office, where it could be examined and copied with her consent.

Vanessa accepted the appointment.

Margaret arrived at Helen's office shortly before noon. Daniel and Vanessa were already in the waiting area. Daniel stood when his mother approached, but Vanessa remained seated, her handbag resting across her knees.

Helen ushered them into the meeting room and explained that the purpose of the meeting was to understand the document, not to assign blame. She asked Vanessa to place the letter on the table.

Vanessa removed a folded sheet from a clear plastic sleeve.

Margaret recognized Peter's handwriting immediately.

The letter was dated three years before his death. It was addressed to Daniel, although the first paragraph referred to the old property arrangement and the account listed in the ledger. Peter had written that the account had been established during negotiations with Arthur Bell and that he had later asked for it to be closed.

The next paragraph was more troubling.

Peter explained that the final account statement did not match the original records. He had been told that the discrepancy resulted from an administrative adjustment, but he had never received the supporting documentation. He advised Daniel not to make any decisions based on verbal assurances and to request the original ledger if the matter was ever reopened.

Margaret read the paragraph again.

“Why did you keep this from me?” she asked Daniel.

He looked stricken. “I thought Dad was writing to me because I was connected to the account. I didn't understand what it meant.”

“Did he explain it to you?”

“Not fully. He said it had been dealt with.”

“Then why did you say nothing when I found the ledger?”

Daniel lowered his head.

“Because I was afraid the account might not have been closed after all.”

Vanessa interrupted. “We were both worried about what could happen if someone claimed the money was missing. We didn't want you dragged into an old dispute.”

Helen held up a hand to keep the conversation from escalating.

“Let's distinguish what the letter establishes from what it doesn't. It confirms that Peter believed there was an unresolved discrepancy. It does not prove that anyone took money improperly or that a claim is still outstanding.”

She asked permission to copy the letter, and Vanessa agreed.

Margaret sat quietly while the document was scanned. Her anger had become something more complicated. Peter had left Daniel a warning, and Daniel had kept it from her. Vanessa had found the letter and chosen not to disclose it. Neither had necessarily understood the full significance, but both had decided that Margaret should not be involved.

When the copies were ready, Helen returned the original to Vanessa and asked whether she would preserve it until the review was complete.

Vanessa agreed.

As they left the office, Daniel approached his mother near the reception desk.

“I should have told you,” he said.

“Yes.”

“I was scared.”

“So was I.”

He looked at her, apparently surprised by the answer.

Margaret adjusted the strap of her handbag. “Being frightened doesn't give either of us the right to keep important facts from the other.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

For the first time in weeks, she saw something like genuine regret on his face. It did not repair the damage, and it did not answer the questions about Vanessa's earlier inquiries. But it was the first admission that did not come wrapped in an excuse.

On the journey home, Margaret thought about Peter's letter. He had written that the account should be reviewed if the original records were found. The ledger had now resurfaced, and the discrepancy was no longer an old suspicion buried in a filing cabinet.

The next step was clear.

Helen would establish whether the account had been properly closed and whether any money remained unaccounted for. Margaret would continue protecting her home and her finances. And Daniel, for the first time, would have to decide whether he was willing to help her understand the truth rather than merely asking her to leave it alone.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: An Unfamiliar Signature Appeared in the Account Records, Raising the Possibility That Someone Had Used Daniel’s Name Without His Knowledge

Margaret spent the morning after her conversation with Daniel trying not to imagine what the missing letter contained.
