She had handled property transfers, reviewed business contracts, and attended enough family meetings to know when someone was lying before they finished speaking.

I had never seen her frightened.

That night, she looked frightened.

She asked everyone except Grandma, Daniel, and me to leave the sitting room. Tyler protested, Vanessa demanded to know whether the trust was legitimate, and my mother refused to move until Grandma told her the conversation was private.

Richard remained standing beside the fireplace.

"I'm not leaving," he said.

Helen adjusted her glasses.

"Then you may listen, but you will not interrupt."

Richard's mouth tightened.

For a moment, I thought he might argue. Instead, he sat down, placed his glass on the mantel, and folded his hands over one knee.

Helen turned toward me.

"The key your father left you was issued by Harbor Street Trust and Savings. The bank's old deposit department was closed nearly twenty years ago, but the records were transferred to a successor institution."

"Can we still open the box?"

"Possibly. However, before you do, you need to understand what your father believed was inside."

She opened her folder and removed a photocopy of a document dated April 1998. The paper bore the heading of the Whitmore Family Foundation, a charitable organization established by my grandfather to support housing projects and community development.

I recognized the name from the letter.

Helen explained that the foundation had received several large donations during the 1990s. The money was supposed to finance affordable apartments for low-income families, but a review had later found that some of the projects had never been completed.

The funds had been transferred through a chain of companies, each with a different registered address. Several properties had been sold at prices far below their assessed values, then resold at substantial profits.

The money did not simply disappear.

It changed hands.

And every time it did, somebody connected to the Whitmore family benefited.

"Your father believed the original ledger documented those transfers," Helen said. "He also believed it contained the names of the people who authorized them."

"Richard?"

She didn't answer.

Richard leaned forward.

"This is absurd. I was running the company at the time. Every transaction was reviewed by accountants and approved by the board."

"Then you should have no objection to examining the records," Helen replied.

"I have no objection to legitimate records. I object to a dead man's suspicions being treated as evidence."

"Nobody has called them evidence yet."

Grandma sat with her hands clasped tightly in her lap.

"The ledger was supposed to be destroyed," she said.

I turned toward her.

"Who told you that?"

"Your grandfather."

She spoke the words with a weariness that made them sound like a confession.

Before his death, my grandfather had been a respected businessman who donated money to hospitals and appeared in newspaper photographs beside politicians. He had also been a demanding father who expected obedience and regarded family loyalty as more important than honesty.

According to Grandma, he had maintained private records of the foundation's accounts because he distrusted outside accountants. He claimed the ledger was simply a backup.

After his death, Richard told the family that the old records had been destroyed during an office renovation.

Grandma had believed him.

Until my father contacted her.

"He showed me copies of several transactions," she said. "I asked Richard to explain them. He said James had misunderstood the accounts and that the discrepancies were caused by old software."

"Why did you believe him?" I asked.

Her face tightened.

"Because believing him was easier than admitting what I suspected."

Richard rose from his chair.

"That's enough."

"No," Grandma said. "I have been silent for twenty-eight years. You don't get to decide when I stop."

He stared at her.

For the first time, I saw something beyond anger in his expression. He looked like a man watching a door open onto a room he had spent decades trying to keep locked.

Helen slid another document across the table.

"The trust distributions were authorized after an independent review of Eleanor's assets. The money being given to the grandchildren comes from investments she owns personally. It is not being taken from the foundation."

"Then why all these conditions?" Tyler demanded from the doorway.

Nobody had noticed him return.

He held his phone in one hand and his check in the other.

"Why does the bank say I can't move the money until I sign additional paperwork? Why is there a clause about cooperating with an investigation? And why did Grandma say the money was connected to old accounts?"

Helen didn't appear surprised.

"The trust protects the beneficiaries from certain legal claims. It also prevents anyone from transferring the money while the source of the disputed funds is being reviewed."

Tyler laughed bitterly.

"So we're rich, but we can't touch the money."

"You can decline the gift," Helen said.

"That's not the point."

"Then what is?"

He opened his mouth, but no answer came.

I watched him glance at the check in his hand. Tyler had spent years talking about the investment properties he intended to buy, the business he planned to launch, and the house he would build once he had enough capital.

Six million dollars had placed all those dreams within reach.

Now he was being asked to wait.

"I didn't steal anything," he said.

"No one has accused you of stealing anything," Helen replied.

"But you're treating us like criminals."

"At present, I am treating you like people who have inherited money from a complicated estate and should understand the risks before spending it."

Tyler looked at Grandma.

"Why couldn't you have done this privately?"

"Because you would have accepted the money without asking where it came from," she said. "And because some of you have spent years repeating stories about your father, your grandfather, and this company without ever asking whether those stories were true."

Her gaze moved across the room.

"That ends tonight."

I returned to the key.

"What happens if we find the ledger?"

Helen took a moment before answering.

"If it exists and contains what your father believed it contained, it could help establish who authorized the transactions. It might also show that some of the properties were acquired using money that did not belong to the people who purchased them."

"And if the ledger is gone?"

"Then we will need other records."

"How long would an investigation take?"

"Months. Possibly longer."

I looked at the clock above the fireplace.

It was almost midnight.

"Then we should start tomorrow."

Helen nodded.

"I'll contact the successor bank when it opens. But I need to warn you about something. If the ledger was hidden in a deposit box, access may require more than the key. The account could have been closed, transferred, or placed under a legal hold."

"Can someone else open it?"

"Only if they have the necessary authorization."

Richard had been silent for several minutes. Now he spoke in a measured voice.

"Before anyone rushes off to search old bank records, I suggest we consider what this could do to the family. Even if James was right about some transactions, those events happened decades ago. People have died. Companies have changed hands. We could spend years fighting over money that none of us needs."

Grandma looked at him.

"That's easy to say when you know what the records contain."

He stood again.

"You have no proof that I know anything."

"Then help us find the truth."

Richard picked up his coat.

"I have nothing more to discuss."

He walked toward the hall, but before he reached the door, his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

Something in his face changed.

He answered without speaking, listened for several seconds, and then said, "No. Don't touch anything. I'll deal with it in the morning."

He ended the call and put the phone away.

I watched him closely.

"Is something wrong?" I asked.

"Business."

"What kind of business?"

"The kind you wouldn't understand."

"Try me."

His eyes narrowed.

"Your father spent his life looking for enemies. Don't make the same mistake."

He left.

Grandma waited until the front door closed before turning to Helen.

"That was the third call he's received tonight."

"How do you know?" Helen asked.

"Because I have been watching him."

"Who called him?"

"I don't know. But the first time, he went outside. The second time, he asked whether the bank had contacted us. And now he has told someone not to touch something."

Helen gathered her papers.

"We need to find out whether the deposit box still exists."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What about Dad's laptop?"

I told Helen where it was.

She suggested we retrieve it in the morning and have a forensic specialist examine the files. She also warned us not to connect it to the internet or attempt to access any encrypted folders until we had made a secure copy.

Grandma listened without interrupting.

When Helen finished, she reached across the table and took my hand.

"I should have protected your father," she said.

I didn't know what to say.

"Why didn't you tell us any of this before he died?"

"Because I thought I could settle it quietly. I thought Richard would return the missing money, explain the transactions, and let the matter end without bringing the family into it."

"Did he?"

"No."

Her fingers tightened around mine.

"And by the time I understood that he would never do so willingly, James was too ill to help me."

The room seemed to shrink around us.

My father had spent his final year in and out of hospitals. His illness had progressed quickly, and the last few months had been filled with medication schedules, insurance calls, and long nights when he couldn't sleep.

I remembered sitting beside his bed while he watched snow falling outside the window.

Once, he had tried to tell me something about the Whitmore family. I had interrupted him to ask whether he wanted more water.

I had assumed there would be another opportunity.

There hadn't been.

Helen rose to leave, but Grandma stopped her.

"One more thing," she said. "The gift letters contain a clause that allows the beneficiaries to request a complete accounting of the trust before accepting the money. Make sure they understand that they don't have to sign anything tonight."

Tyler, who had remained near the doorway, shook his head.

"You expect me to turn down six million dollars because of a ledger that might not even exist?"

"No," Grandma replied. "I expect you to decide what kind of person you want to be when the truth becomes inconvenient."

He looked away.

After everyone else had gone upstairs, Daniel and I sat with Grandma in the quiet sitting room. The Christmas tree lights reflected in the dark windows. The untouched dessert sat on a tray near the fireplace.

I asked whether she believed Richard had stolen money.

She looked at the photograph of my father that I had placed beside the envelope.

"I believe your father found something he shouldn't have found," she said. "I believe he tried to do the right thing. And I believe somebody was willing to frighten him into silence."

"Do you think that somebody was Richard?"

She closed her eyes.

"I think the ledger will tell us more than any of us wants to know."

The next morning, Helen called at eight fifteen.

The successor bank had located the old deposit account.

The box had never been formally closed.

But there was a problem.

According to the bank's records, someone had accessed it six weeks earlier.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Someone Had Opened the Deposit Box Before We Arrived, and the Bank’s Records Pointed Toward a Person We Trusted

Helen Price had represented my grandmother for twenty-six years.
