14 – The River Property Led Us to a Witness My Father Had Protected for Decades, and His Story Changed What I Thought I Knew About Edward

We left before sunrise.

The river was almost completely covered in fog.

Samuel drove.

Nora sat beside him.

My mother and I were in the back seat.

Nobody spoke much.

The map Dad had left behind was spread across my lap.

The property was officially mine.

At least according to the records.

But the old documents suggested something different.

The land had once belonged to Hail Mechanical.

Then it had been transferred through three companies.

Eventually it had been placed under Hail Preservation Trust.

The trust was supposed to protect it.

But from whom?

When we arrived, the property looked abandoned.

Tall grass surrounded a small brick building.

The windows were boarded.

The roof had partially collapsed.

There was an old metal gate hanging open.

My mother stared at the building.

“I've never been here.”

“Dad had,” I said.

She nodded.

“He went everywhere without telling me.”

We entered carefully.

The inside smelled of damp wood.

There was almost nothing left.

An old desk.

Two broken chairs.

A rusted filing cabinet.

Then Nora noticed the wall.

“There.”

A small rectangle had been painted over.

She scraped away the paint.

A metal plate appeared.

HAIL PRESERVATION TRUST.

Underneath was a number.

417.

I felt a chill.

“Everything comes back to that number.”

Samuel examined the plate.

“Your father used it as a reference.”

“For what?”

“Safe storage.”

We searched the room.

Nothing.

Then my mother noticed a loose floorboard.

She knelt.

“This.”

I lifted it.

Beneath the board was a narrow tunnel.

My mother stepped back.

“What is that?”

Samuel looked inside.

“An old service passage.”

Nora took out her flashlight.

“We should be careful.”

The passage was barely wide enough for one person.

It led beneath the building.

At the end was a steel door.

There was no lock.

Just a handle.

I opened it.

Inside was a small room.

And someone was sitting there.

An old man.

He looked at us without surprise.

“I wondered when Clare would come.”

My heart stopped.

“Who are you?”

He stood slowly.

“My name is Thomas Reed.”

Samuel stared at him.

“You're alive.”

The man smiled.

“Apparently.”

Nora looked at me.

“You know him?”

“No.”

Thomas walked toward an old table.

“I knew your father.”

“How?”

“He paid me to keep records.”

“What records?”

“The original ones.”

He opened a drawer.

Inside were boxes of documents.

Property transfers.

Bank records.

Corporate filings.

Photographs.

Everything was organized by year.

My mother covered her mouth.

“How long have you been here?”

“Twenty-eight years.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because Edward asked me to.”

The name changed everything.

“Edward?”

Thomas nodded.

“He came here the night before he disappeared.”

“Did he fake his death?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard Bell had discovered that Edward knew where the original records were.”

I looked at Samuel.

“So Edward wasn't protecting money.”

“No,” Thomas said.

“He was protecting evidence.”

I felt my assumptions shifting again.

“Then why did Dad let everyone believe Edward was a thief?”

Thomas looked at me.

“Because someone had to be.”

I shook my head.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It did at the time.”

He explained that Bell had arranged for money to disappear from Hail Mechanical.

The transfers had been designed to make Edward appear responsible.

Edward knew the truth.

Walter knew the truth.

But if they exposed Bell immediately, Bell would expose the people whose names appeared in the records.

Some were innocent.

Some were guilty.

Some were powerful enough to destroy everyone involved.

“So Dad chose silence.”

Thomas nodded.

“For a while.”

“And Edward disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“Then what happened?”

“Walter spent twenty-seven years collecting evidence.”

I looked at the boxes.

“And Mark?”

Thomas's face hardened.

“Mark was the final mistake.”

“What do you mean?”

“Your father trusted him.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“Dad trusted Mark?”

“Not at first.”

Thomas explained that Walter had initially suspected Mark.

But later, Mark convinced him that he wanted to protect the family.

“He lied to my father.”

“Yes.”

“And Dad believed him?”

“For a short time.”

I looked down.

That hurt more than I expected.

My father had been brilliant enough to uncover an international financial network.

Yet he had believed my husband.

Thomas looked at me.

“Your father blamed himself.”

“For what?”

“For not seeing how easily greed could imitate loyalty.”

I sat down.

My mother placed a hand on my shoulder.

Thomas opened another box.

Inside was a letter.

“This was written by Edward.”

I read it.

Walter,

If Clare ever learns the truth, she must know that I did not abandon the family.

I disappeared because Bell wanted to use me against you.

You chose to let the world hate me.

I understood why.

But one day Clare may not.

If that happens, tell her I was trying to keep one person safe.

Her.

I closed my eyes.

Edward had spent twenty-seven years carrying the blame for something he had not done.

And my father had allowed his own daughter to believe her uncle was dead.

I finally understood why Edward had refused to return publicly.

He had not been hiding from the law.

He had been hiding from history.

Thomas placed another document on the table.

“This is the final property record.”

I looked at it.

The river property.

The warehouse.

Several commercial buildings.

All were connected to the same trust.

But there was one additional name.

Hail Family Preservation Trust.

Beneficiary: Clare Hail.

Trustee: Walter Hail.

Successor trustee: Edward Hail.

I looked up.

“Edward was supposed to control this after Dad died?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he?”

“Because he didn't trust himself.”

I frowned.

Thomas explained.

“Edward believed that if he returned immediately, Bell would follow him.”

“And he was right.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he appear at the warehouse?”

“Because Mark found the ledger.”

I understood.

Edward had only returned because the danger had returned.

Not because he wanted the property.

Not because he wanted money.

Because Mark had found the trail.

Thomas reached into another box.

“This is for you.”

It was a photograph.

Dad.

Edward.

My mother.

And me.

I was about ten years old.

We were standing beneath the maple tree.

I had forgotten the picture existed.

On the back Dad had written:

The only thing worth protecting is the person who never asked for any of this.

I stared at the photograph until the words blurred.

My mother began to cry.

“I remember that day.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Dad?”

“Of losing you.”

Thomas looked away.

“There is one more thing.”

I wiped my eyes.

“What?”

He pointed toward a locked cabinet.

“Your father never opened it.”

“Why?”

“Because he said you should decide whether it deserved to be opened.”

I walked toward it.

There was no key.

Instead, there was a small indentation shaped like the brass seal.

I took the seal from my purse.

It fit perfectly.

I pressed it down.

The lock released.

Inside was a single file.

No money.

No property records.

No names.

Only a medical report.

My father's.

I read the date.

It was from six months before his death.

The report contained something I had never been told.

Dad had known he was dying.

Not suddenly.

Not unexpectedly.

He had known for months.

And at the bottom of the report was a handwritten note.

If Clare ever asks whether I had time to tell her everything, the answer is yes.

If she asks why I didn't, tell her I was afraid she would forgive me too quickly.

I couldn't breathe.

My mother whispered, “He knew.”

“Yes.”

“He had time.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the report.

For the first time, I understood the deepest secret of all.

Dad had not failed to tell me because he ran out of time.

He had chosen silence.

And now I had to decide what to do with the truth.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: My Father Had Left One Final Choice for Me, and It Forced Me to Decide Whether
