I&#39;m being practical. Your father worked his whole life. He built something substantial. You\u2019re his only child. Eventually, that money comes to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t even know how much there is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer bothered me more than the resignation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much do you think there is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few million, probably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned toward the sink and stared through the window at the backyard. Dad had planted the maple tree there when I was twelve. He had spent two weekends digging the hole because he refused to hire anyone for a job he could do himself.<\/p>\n<p>A few million.<\/p>\n<p>Mark had said it as casually as someone estimating the value of an old car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven&#39;t spoken to the estate attorney yet,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t need to know every detail before we make plans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere you go again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgain what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaking everything sound separate. We&#39;re married, Clare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For twenty-two years, that sentence would have comforted me.<\/p>\n<p>That afternoon, Mark called his mother.<\/p>\n<p>I was in the living room when I heard his voice from the kitchen. He had not closed the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom, it&#39;s happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped folding Dad\u2019s old cardigan.<\/p>\n<p>Mark lowered his voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I&#39;m serious. I quit today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. Clare&#39;s going to inherit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know the exact number yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood very still.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mark laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I couldn&#39;t hear what Diane said, but Mark answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course you can start looking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My fingers tightened around the cardigan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA house?\u201d he said. \u201cSure. Something comfortable. You don&#39;t need to worry about the price.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I walked toward the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Mark saw me and ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything okay?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is looking for a house?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith what money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He gave me a puzzled expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you making this difficult?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked a simple question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;s thinking about downsizing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told you that today?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark slipped his phone into his pocket.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe mentioned it before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew his mother. Diane had lived in the same three-bedroom house for more than twenty years. His favorite blue jacket hung behind the bedroom door.<\/p>\n<p>At two in the morning, I walked downstairs and found Mark at the dining table.<\/p>\n<p>He had his laptop open.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed it too quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the screen before it went dark.<\/p>\n<p>There had been numbers on it.<\/p>\n<p>Several rows of numbers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere you working on something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust looking at our finances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur finances?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He closed the laptop completely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#39;s no reason to worry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn&#39;t worried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou looked worried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI looked curious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He kissed my forehead.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to believe that gesture meant what it had meant for years.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I found myself wondering what he had been calculating.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, I called Samuel Green, the attorney who had handled Dad&#39;s affairs for nearly twenty years.<\/p>\n<p>His receptionist told me he was unavailable.<\/p>\n<p>Then, ten minutes later, my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClare?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel&#39;s voice was gentle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m sorry about your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you to come to my office tomorrow morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout the estate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan Mark come with me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father left specific instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat kind?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would rather explain them in person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs something wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot necessarily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you to trust me on this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>Mark was upstairs showering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did my father tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can&#39;t discuss that over the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he know something was going to happen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samuel was silent long enough that I knew the question had struck somewhere important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome tomorrow morning,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the call ended, I remained seated at the kitchen table.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had been dead four days.<\/p>\n<p>My husband had quit his job.<\/p>\n<p>His mother was looking at houses.<\/p>\n<p>And now the lawyer who had known my father for two decades was asking me to come alone.<\/p>\n<p>I heard footsteps behind me.<\/p>\n<p>Mark entered the kitchen, buttoning his shirt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hands stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he want?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked me to come in tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEstate matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll come with you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked me to come alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>For less than a second, his expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>It was so brief I almost dismissed it.<\/p>\n<p>Then he smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s strange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said Dad left private instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark walked to the coffee machine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#39;re married, Clare. There shouldn&#39;t be anything about your finances that I&#39;m not allowed to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey aren&#39;t my finances yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey&#39;re still your father\u2019s estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word came out more sharply than I intended.<\/p>\n<p>Mark stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then his face softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He poured coffee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He took one sip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust call me as soon as you know the number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know.
