At first, none of them could see anything unusual.

Samuel stood several feet away while Grant and Marcus searched the seams.

“It was near the wall,” Samuel said. “Richard moved the cabinet whenever he wanted to access it.”

Clara immediately walked toward the largest cabinet.

She placed both hands against its side.

“It was here.”

Marcus helped her move it.

Behind it was a narrow section of flooring that looked slightly newer than the surrounding boards.

Grant crouched.

“That's it.”

The panel lifted after several attempts.

Beneath it was a shallow cavity.

Inside sat a black metal box.

There was no lock.

There was no label.

Only a strip of faded hospital tape wrapped around one corner.

Emily's heart began pounding.

Grant removed the box and placed it on the table.

Nobody touched it for several seconds.

Finally, Emily opened the lid.

Inside were three documents.

The first was an old hospital admission record.

The second was a photograph.

The third was a handwritten statement.

Emily picked up the hospital record.

The paper was brittle, but the information was still readable.

She scanned the page.

Then she froze.

“This isn't Clara.”

Clara stepped closer.

“What does it say?”

Emily looked at the name.

“Female infant. Admitted at eleven seventeen.”

Below the admission time was another name.

Rebecca Hale.

Father: Thomas Hale.

Date: eleven years before Emily's birth.

Clara stared at the paper.

“That can't be.”

Thomas looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

“Read the next line,” he said.

Emily did.

“Infant transferred under emergency protection order. Identity withheld.”

There was no child's name.

Only a handwritten notation:

“Protected by family agreement.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

Rebecca had never told him.

Or perhaps she had, and someone had removed the information.

Emily looked at him.

“Was there another child?”

Thomas shook his head slowly.

“I believed there was.”

The admission record suddenly explained why so many documents had referred to missing beneficiaries without naming them.

The family had not been hiding one missing child.

They had been hiding the existence of an entire protected identity.

Clara stepped back.

“Then who was the baby?”

Nobody answered.

Samuel picked up the photograph.

He stared at it for several seconds.

Then his hands began to tremble.

“I've seen this.”

Emily looked at the picture.

It showed Rebecca sitting in a hospital bed.

A newborn lay beside her.

Thomas stood near the window.

And behind them was a woman Emily recognized immediately.

Evelyn.

But the photograph had been taken years before the family claimed Evelyn had ever met Rebecca.

Clara stared at her mother.

“Why were you there?”

Evelyn's face became pale.

“I was asked to protect the baby.”

“By whom?”

Evelyn looked at Thomas.

“Your grandfather.”

Thomas lowered his head.

He remembered something.

A conversation.

A warning.

A hospital corridor.

And a child he had been told he could never publicly acknowledge.

“I thought the baby died,” he whispered.

Evelyn shook her head.

“She didn't.”

Emily's heart raced.

“Where is she?”

Evelyn did not answer.

Instead, she pointed to the handwritten statement.

“Read that.”

Emily unfolded it.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

The statement explained that the infant had been placed under a temporary identity because someone inside the financial network had discovered the existence of the fourth beneficiary.

If the child's identity became public, the trust could be challenged.

The statement mentioned Richard Vale.

But Richard had not yet been powerful enough to control the network.

Someone else had ordered the concealment.

Someone much closer to the family.

Emily reached the final paragraph.

The writer stated that the infant would eventually be reunited with her siblings when the trust became safe.

But there was one condition.

The child must never be told that she was being watched.

Emily looked around the room.

“Who wrote this?”

Thomas picked up the page.

His expression changed.

“Robert.”

Everyone went silent.

Robert had known.

He had known about the fourth child.

He had known about the hospital.

And he had known why the child disappeared.

Emily felt anger rising in her chest.

“My father knew all of this.”

Thomas corrected her gently.

“Your legal father did.”

Emily stared at him.

“Then where is he?”

No one knew.

That question had been buried for years beneath false deaths, false identities, and false records.

But now it had become impossible to ignore.

Grant took the photograph.

“There may be more.”

She pointed toward the back.

A number was written there.

17.

Emily immediately remembered the key.

The same number had appeared on the original archive key, the old locker, and the final vault.

“It's connected,” she said.

Marcus nodded.

“Everything has been connected.”

Clara turned toward the wall.

“What if Room 17 wasn't the final archive?”

Emily looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

Clara pointed to the photograph.

“Look behind my mother.”

There was a hospital door visible in the background.

The room number was barely readable.

17.

Emily felt her pulse accelerate.

Grant immediately contacted the hospital archives.

The hospital still existed.

The building had been renovated, but the old records had been digitized.

And when Grant gave the archivist the admission date, the response came quickly.

“There is one additional record,” Grant said after ending the call.

“What does it say?” Emily asked.

Grant looked at her.

“It says the infant was discharged to a private guardian.”

“Name?”

Grant hesitated.

“Eleanor Vale.”

Clara slowly sat down.

“My mother?”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know what else to do.”

Emily stared at her.

“You raised the child?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

She looked toward Clara.

“I protected her.”

Clara's face changed.

For the first time, she understood why Richard had spent years controlling her.

Why he had insisted she belonged to him.

Why the trust documents had always contained a space that nobody could explain.

And why someone had once called her the missing child.

But then Emily noticed something that made her blood run cold.

The hospital record did not say Clara's name.

It said another name.

A name none of them recognized.

Click here to continue reading: PART 27: The Name on the Hospital Record Was Not
