Samuel occupied the other side, staring through the window at fields sliding past beneath a pale winter sky.

Across from us, Rebecca held a folder against her chest.

She had stopped trying to explain the past.

Perhaps she had finally understood that there were some things explanations could not repair.

I watched the landscape change from crowded highways to narrow roads lined with bare trees.

“Where exactly are we going?” Daniel asked.

“Thomas’s house,” Grant said from the front.

“Does he actually live there?”

“He says he does.”

Samuel gave a humorless laugh.

“In this family, that's not reassuring.”

I almost smiled.

Almost.

The address led us to a small farmhouse beyond a gravel road.

No gates.

No cameras.

No visible security.

That made me more nervous than a guarded compound would have.

Thomas opened the door before we reached it.

He looked older than the man in the recording.

His hair was almost entirely white.

His shoulders were slightly bent.

But his eyes were clear.

He looked at me first.

Then Daniel.

Then Samuel.

For several seconds he said nothing.

Finally he whispered, “My children.”

Daniel stopped walking.

“I don't know what I'm supposed to call you.”

Thomas nodded.

“You don't have to call me anything.”

That answer seemed to surprise him.

We entered.

The house was warm and plain.

Books filled the shelves.

A wood stove crackled near the kitchen.

There were no expensive objects.

No family portraits.

No evidence of the fortune that had shaped all our lives.

Thomas poured coffee for everyone.

Nobody touched it.

I looked around.

“Where is Clara?”

Thomas's expression changed.

“I don't know.”

“You said the ledger was here.”

“It is.”

“Then where?”

“Safe.”

“Define safe.”

He looked at me.

“Somewhere Richard cannot reach.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“We need the ledger.”

Thomas nodded.

“You do.”

“Then show us.”

Thomas walked toward the hallway.

He stopped beside an old coat rack.

He removed a wooden peg.

A section of wall clicked.

A narrow panel opened.

Behind it was a staircase.

We followed him underground.

The room beneath the house was larger than I expected.

Metal cabinets lined the walls.

There were computers, paper files, old tapes, and photographs.

A map covered one wall.

Lines connected names across cities and countries.

I recognized some.

Banks.

Companies.

Law firms.

Political offices.

Thomas stood beside it.

“This is what your grandfather discovered.”

Grant photographed everything.

“Who maintained this?”

“Your grandfather started it.”

“And you?”

“I continued it.”

Robert looked at the files.

“You kept records after you disappeared.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To make sure someone could eventually finish what we started.”

I stared at the map.

There were hundreds of names.

Some were crossed out.

Others were circled.

One name appeared in red.

Richard Vale.

Another appeared beneath it.

Clara Vale.

“Why is Clara circled?”

Thomas looked away.

“She discovered the truth.”

“About being your daughter?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Six months ago.”

“Then why didn't she tell us?”

“She was afraid Richard would kill her.”

I remembered Clara's face.

The fear had always been there.

I had mistaken it for guilt.

Thomas opened a cabinet.

Inside were photographs of Clara as a child.

Thomas holding her.

Thomas teaching her to ride a bicycle.

Thomas standing beside her at school.

Richard appeared in several photographs too.

Always nearby.

Always watching.

“He raised her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To keep her inheritance under his control.”

“What inheritance?”

Thomas removed a document.

A trust agreement.

Clara Hale was named beneficiary.

Her portion was separate from ours.

The amount was smaller.

But the conditions were different.

Her trust contained evidence.

Not money.

Records.

Names.

Account numbers.

Everything Richard needed to control people.

Everything Clara could use to destroy him.

I looked at Thomas.

“Why didn't you tell her?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Three times.”

“What happened?”

“Richard intercepted every message.”

I looked at Grant.

“Can we find her?”

“We'll try.”

Thomas turned toward a cabinet.

“There is something else.”

He removed a small metal box.

Inside was a key.

Stamped 17.

I stared.

The same number had appeared throughout the records.

“What's this?”

“The final archive.”

“Where?”

“Boston.”

Grant frowned.

“You kept another archive?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I never trusted the Vermont house.”

I almost laughed.

“Of course you didn't.”

Thomas smiled sadly.

“You have every right to be angry.”

“I am.”

“I know.”

He handed me the key.

“The archive contains the names of everyone who knew about the trust.”

I looked at it.

“Does it contain Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Victor?”

“Yes.”

“Mom?”

“Yes.”

“Robert?”

Thomas looked at him.

“Yes.”

Robert nodded.

“I deserve that.”

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Grant raised her weapon.

Thomas whispered, “Nobody should know we're here.”

The footsteps moved across the floor.

Then stopped.

A door opened.

We heard a woman crying.

Clara.

I ran upstairs.

She stood in the kitchen.

Her clothes were torn.

There was blood on her sleeve.

I reached her.

“Are you hurt?”

“Not badly.”

“Who did this?”

“Richard.”

“Where is he?”

“He's outside.”

Grant moved toward the window.

Clara grabbed her arm.

“No.”

“Why?”

“He wants you to see him.”

Grant stopped.

“What does he want?”

Clara looked at me.

“The ledger.”

Thomas came upstairs.

Clara turned toward him.

For several seconds they simply stared.

Then she whispered, “You knew.”

Thomas nodded.

“I did.”

“You're my father.”

“Yes.”

She covered her mouth.

“I spent my whole life calling him Dad.”

“I know.”

“He told me you abandoned me.”

“I never knew where you were.”

“You could have looked harder.”

Thomas's eyes filled with tears.

“I did.”

Clara turned away.

A car engine started outside.

Grant moved toward the door.

Thomas stopped her.

“Don't.”

“Why?”

“He's trying to draw you away.”

The engine revved.

Then the vehicle drove off.

Grant looked through the window.

“Did he leave?”

Thomas nodded.

“No.”

He pointed toward the woods.

“He wants us to think he did.”

We waited.

Ten minutes.

Twenty.

Nothing.

Then Samuel found a note taped beneath the kitchen table.

Richard had written only one sentence.

The ledger was never the treasure.

The person who can open it is.

Everyone looked at me.

I felt the old fear return.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas's face had gone pale.

“It means he knows about the final archive.”

I tightened my hand around the key.

“Then we go to Boston.”

Thomas shook his head.

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because there is something in this house you need to see first.”

He led me back downstairs.

At the far end of the archive was a locked cabinet.

He opened it.

Inside were birth records.

Every original document.

Mine.

Daniel's.

Samuel's.

Clara's.

And one more.

A fifth record.

The mother's name was Rebecca.

The father's name was Thomas.

But the child's name had been blacked out.

I stared.

“Who is this?”

Thomas looked at me.

“That is the
