Daniel. Samuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood near the window.<\/p>\n<p>He had been listening silently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you let us grow up without you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas answered him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Robert threatened to make sure none of you survived the consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked away.<\/p>\n<p>I understood his anger.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing why someone abandoned you did not make abandonment disappear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Samuel?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStill with Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictor found him years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he safe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer frightened me more than anything else.<\/p>\n<p>Grant wrote rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Hale, can you give us a location?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can give you an address.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He read it slowly.<\/p>\n<p>A private residence outside Lisbon.<\/p>\n<p>Grant immediately contacted international authorities.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Marcus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Victor died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believed everything he told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus didn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>Then Thomas said something that made everyone turn toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarcus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father left something for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marcus stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Victor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your father knew Robert would eventually come looking for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas explained that the letter contained the location of the original asset ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Not the family ledger.<\/p>\n<p>The older one.<\/p>\n<p>The ledger created before my grandfather&#39;s trust existed.<\/p>\n<p>The one that could explain where the first money came from.<\/p>\n<p>Grant asked whether Thomas had a copy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how do you know it exists?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI helped write it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The call ended.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Finally Rebecca sat beside Calder.<\/p>\n<p>They found dozens of identities.<\/p>\n<p>Passports.<\/p>\n<p>Driver&#39;s licenses.<\/p>\n<p>Bank cards.<\/p>\n<p>Photographs.<\/p>\n<p>There were pictures of me at every major stage authorities confirmed that someone matching Victor&#39;s description had left Lisbon two days earlier.<\/p>\n<p>His destination was unknown.<\/p>\n<p>But his credit card had been used once.<\/p>\n<p>At a hotel in Boston.<\/p>\n<p>Grant looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s where this started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew what she meant.<\/p>\n<p>The hotel was three blocks from the bank.<\/p>\n<p>The same bank where my fraudulent transfer had been initiated.<\/p>\n<p>Victor had never been far away.<\/p>\n<p>He had been watching the entire investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he had even expected it.<\/p>\n<p>Then another message arrived on my phone.<\/p>\n<p>You were never supposed to find the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>I showed Grant.<\/p>\n<p>The message continued.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you have, you need to decide whether you want the truth or your family.<\/p>\n<p>A location followed.<\/p>\n<p>An abandoned church.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel read the message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re not walking into another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNames are useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you Robert?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you abandon us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was forced to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe threatened to expose the existence of Samuel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did that have to do with you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A door opened behind the altar.<\/p>\n<p>A man stepped out.<\/p>\n<p>Older.<\/p>\n<p>Gray-haired.<\/p>\n<p>The face was thinner than I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>But I knew him.<\/p>\n<p>I knew the slight bend in his shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>The way he held his left hand.<\/p>\n<p>The ring.<\/p>\n<p>My father.<\/p>\n<p>Robert.<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time in seventeen years, he said my
