Come down slowly.”

Rebecca appeared at the top of the stairs.

She looked older than the photograph.

Her hair was streaked with silver.

Her face was thinner.

But her eyes were unmistakably the same eyes I had seen in the picture.

My eyes.

She looked at me for a long time.

Then she whispered, “Emily.”

I didn't move.

“You're my mother.”

She nodded.

“I am.”

“Why did you let me believe you were dead?”

“Because I thought distance would keep you alive.”

“It didn't.”

“No.”

She came down the stairs slowly.

“I was wrong about that.”

I wanted to hug her.

I wanted to slap her.

I wanted to ask why she hadn't fought harder for me.

Instead I said, “You should have come back.”

Her face crumpled.

“I tried.”

“Not hard enough.”

“I wrote you every me.”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“I believed I could protect you from a distance.”

“You protected everyone except me.”

She absorbed the words without defending herself.

That mattered.

Then she held out a key.

“The ledger is below the library.”

Grant asked, “Why did you bring us here?”

“Because this is where everything began.”

She led us into the library.

A large portrait of my grandfather hung above the fireplace.

Rebecca touched the frame.

“He built the house because he wanted one room nobody else could enter.”

She removed the painting.

Behind it was a narrow opening.

A hidden staircase descended into darkness.

We followed.

At the bottom was a concrete room.

Metal cabinets lined the walls.

There were boxes of documents, old photographs, property deeds, and handwritten records.

In the center sat a wooden table.

The ledger rested on it.

It was enormous.

Dark leather.

Brass corners.

A lock had been broken.

Rebecca touched the cover.

“Your grandfather kept every transaction.”

I opened it.

Names filled the pages.

Companies.

Amounts.

Dates.

Property addresses.

Payments.

And beside some entries was one repeated notation.

E.W.

“What's that?”

Rebecca looked at the page.

“Evidence that your grandfather knew.”

I turned another page.

There it was.

A transfer from the trust into a company controlled by Mom.

Then another.

Then another.

The total climbed into millions.

But something didn't fit.

Mom had not taken all the money.

Some transfers went to charities.

Some went to accounts belonging to people I didn't recognize.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Marcus Hale.

I looked at Rebecca.

“He was involved.”

“He was helping your grandfather.”

“Then why was money sent to him?”

“Because he was protecting the evidence.”

Another page showed payments to hospitals.

Then adoption agencies.

Then a private investigator.

My stomach tightened.

“Why would Grandpa pay adoption agencies?”

Rebecca looked at me.

“He wasn't arranging your adoption.”

She turned the page.

The payments were made after my birth.

“What were they for?”

“People your mother wanted removed from your life.”

The room went silent.

I read the names.

One belonged to a woman who had worked for our family when I was a child.

I remembered her.

Mrs. Carter.

She disappeared when I was eight.

Mom told me she had moved away.

Another name belonged to a neighbor.

A man who used to bring Grandpa newspapers.

He disappeared too.

“Mom made people disappear?”

“Not all of them.”

Rebecca pointed to the ledger.

“Some accepted money to leave.”

“And the others?”

She didn't answer.

Grant photographed every page.

Then a sound came from upstairs.

A door slammed.

Rebecca froze.

“She found us.”

“Who?”

My mother.

The police moved toward the stairs.

Then smoke began creeping under the basement door.

Someone had set the house on fire.

Grant shouted for everyone to move.

We grabbed the ledger.

Rebecca tried to carry a box.

I pulled it from her hands.

“Leave it.”

“These are the originals.”

“We have the photographs.”

She looked at me.

Then dropped the box.

We climbed.

Smoke thickened.

By the time we reached the library, flames were spreading along the curtains.

The portrait had fallen.

The hidden passage was filling with heat.

A figure moved across the hallway.

Mom.

She stood near the front door.

For one second our eyes met.

She looked at Rebecca.

“You should have stayed gone.”

Rebecca stepped forward.

“You stole my daughter.”

Mom's face hardened.

“She was safer with me.”

“You lied to her.”

“I protected her.”

“You used her.”

Mom looked at me.

“You would not have survived what your grandfather left behind.”

“Then why did you take the money?”

“Because I knew what the money attracted.”

Grant raised her weapon.

“Mrs. Wilson, step away from the door.”

Mom backed toward it.

“You think this is about money?”

“It's about fraud, identity theft, and attempted murder.”

Mom laughed.

“You have no idea how many people will come after her when you expose those records.”

I held the ledger against my chest.

“Who?”

She looked at me.

“The people your grandfather was paying.”

Then she ran.

Officers chased her outside.

I followed as far as the porch.

Mom disappeared into the trees.

A helicopter swept over the property.

Then the roof groaned.

Grant grabbed my arm.

“Move!”

We ran.

The front windows exploded outward.

The house burned behind us.

Rebecca stood beside me, staring at the flames.

“Why would she destroy the ledger if she knew there were copies?”

“She thought she could destroy the original.”

Grant looked at me.

“We still have the photographs.”

I opened the ledger again.

A loose page fell from the center.

Rebecca picked it up.

Her hands began shaking.

“What?”

She handed it to me.

It was my grandfather's final statement.

He had written that the trust was never intended to belong solely to me.

It had been divided between Rebecca and me.

But there was a second beneficiary.

A child.

A boy born three years after me.

I stared at the name.

Daniel Wilson.

I knew him.

My cousin.

Or so I thought.

Rebecca looked horrified.

“That's impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel was never supposed to exist.”

Grant looked between us.

“What does that mean?”

Rebecca turned another page.

The answer was written in my grandfather's handwriting.

Daniel was not my cousin.

He was my half-brother.

And the person who had been controlling his inheritance was my mother.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Daniel Was Never the
