worse.

Grant asked him to explain everything from the beginning.

Marcus sat down.

He told us that Rebecca and Mom had been close when they were young.

My grandfather had built a large investment company and expected both daughters to work within it.

Rebecca wanted nothing to do with the business.

Mom wanted everything.

“She believed your grandfather's wealth should belong to the family,” Marcus said.

“What did Rebecca believe?”

“That wealth came with obligations.”

He explained that Rebecca discovered money being diverted through shell companies.

She confronted Mom.

Then she discovered something else.

The money wasn't merely being stolen from my grandfather.

Some of it was being moved into accounts created under my name before I was old enough to understand what they were.

“My grandfather knew?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he stop it?”

“He tried.”

Marcus described a meeting between my grandfather, Rebecca, Mom, and Robert.

Robert wasn't my biological father.

He was the family attorney.

My grandfather had asked him to protect me.

Mom refused to surrender control.

Rebecca was pregnant.

With me.

“She wanted to leave,” Marcus said. “But your grandfather feared she would be reputation.

Then the family made an agreement.

Rebecca would disappear publicly.

Mom would raise me.

Robert would act as my legal father.

Marcus would manage the financial records.

No one expected the arrangement to last decades.

But once Mom realized she could control the trust through my identity, she had no reason to give me back.

I stared at him.

“So she kept me because I was useful.”

Marcus looked down.

“At first, I don't think that's how she saw why?”

“Because love and control can exist in the same person.”

Grant asked about the missing red folder.

Marcus explained that it contained the original trust agreement and evidence showing that Mom had redirected millions.

“Where is Rebecca now?” I asked.

“I don't know.”

“You spoke to alone.”

The next message arrived.

If the detective comes, the evidence disappears forever.

I looked at Marcus.

He was already standing.

“She knows your mother will find another way to reach the records.”

Grant studied the screen.

“Where does she want you to meet?”

I read the address.

My it.

“That's where your grandfather died.”

I nodded.

Marcus looked frightened.

“Then she's found the original ledger.”

I stared at him.

“What ledger?”

He hesitated.

“The one your grandfather used to record every payment your mother made.”

“And where is
