But first you need to hear the recording your mother tried to destroy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A file arrived in my email.<\/p>\n<p>Grant connected my phone to her computer.<\/p>\n<p>The recording began with my grandfather&#39;s voice.<\/p>\n<p>He sounded weak.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca was speaking nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom entered the room.<\/p>\n<p>Grandfather accused her of stealing from one of his companies.<\/p>\n<p>Mom threatened to prevent him from seeing me if he reported her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no right to use Emily against me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am her mother,\u201d Mom answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he replied. \u201cYou are the woman who agreed to raise her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to tilt.<\/p>\n<p>Mom demanded that he stop.<\/p>\n<p>He continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmily belongs with Rebecca.
