Nobody stays untouched.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer seemed to bother the girl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen how do you know what is your fault?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou learn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListen when someone tells you that you hurt them. Don&#39;t immediately defend yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook at what keeps happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the same problem follows you from relationship to relationship, stop blaming everyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl smiled slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEventually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot at first?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret watched the rain.<\/p>\n<p>She thought about the years when she had believed the problem was entirely her children.<\/p>\n<p>They had behaved badly.<\/p>\n<p>They had been entitled.<\/p>\n<p>They had hurt her.<\/p>\n<p>All of that was true.<\/p>\n<p>But she had also participated in the pattern by repeatedly rescuing them.<\/p>\n<p>She had rewarded dependence.<\/p>\n<p>She had confused generosity with responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>She had been afraid to say no.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding that did not make their behavior acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>But it gave her something important.<\/p>\n<p>Agency.<\/p>\n<p>She could not control their choices.<\/p>\n<p>She could control hers.<\/p>\n<p>Her granddaughter asked, \u201cWere you ever afraid you&#39;d lose them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you still changed the will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause losing yourself to keep someone else close isn&#39;t really keeping them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl stared at her grandmother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like something I should remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They sat quietly.<\/p>\n<p>After a while, the girl asked, \u201cDid you ever hate Grandpa?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret looked at the rain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hated what he had done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you stop loving him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret smiled sadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t have to choose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could love someone and hate something they did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat seems impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt only seems impossible when we think love requires approval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret explained that love could coexist with disappointment.<\/p>\n<p>Affection could coexist with boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>Forgiveness could coexist with memory.<\/p>\n<p>None of those things erased consequences.<\/p>\n<p>The girl listened carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you think Grandpa forgave himself?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret considered the question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot completely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe because some guilt is useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt reminds you that something mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut isn&#39;t guilt bad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo much guilt can destroy you. Too little can make you dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResponsibility is what comes between those two extremes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does responsibility look like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChanging your behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer was simple.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that was why it mattered.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, they visited Willow Creek.<\/p>\n<p>The granddaughter walked through the archive alone for a while.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret waited outside.<\/p>\n<p>When the girl returned, she held a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I ask you something?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is there so much about the adults?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe archive is about what grown-ups did.
