13 – The Birthday Celebration Ended Peacefully, Until a Letter From Clara Arrived With One Final Question About Richard

The morning after my seventy-fourth birthday, the house looked as though a small storm had passed through it.

Paper lanterns still hung between the trees.

A few balloons had escaped into the branches.

The kitchen counters were crowded with plates, glasses, and containers of leftover food.

I didn't mind the mess.

For years, I had associated an empty house with peace.

Now I understood that peace could also survive inside a noisy one.

I made coffee and opened the back door.

The garden smelled of damp earth and roses.

Michael had left his jacket on the porch.

Jennifer had forgotten a serving spoon.

Lisa had taken the grandchildren home in such a hurry that she left two board games stacked beside the sofa.

I smiled at each little reminder.

Then I noticed an envelope on the kitchen table.

It hadn't been there the night before.

My name was written across the front.

Margaret Harris.

The handwriting wasn't familiar.

I picked it up.

There was no return address.

For several seconds I simply held it.

After everything that had happened, an unexpected envelope no longer felt harmless.

I called Thomas.

He answered on the third ring.

"Morning."

"I received a letter."

"From whom?"

"I don't know."

"Don't open it yet."

I laughed softly.

"You always say that."

"And you always ignore me."

"Usually."

He sighed.

"Send me a photograph."

I did.

A few minutes later, he called back.

"I don't recognize the handwriting."

"Neither do I."

"Does it have a postmark?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"California."

There was a pause.

"Clara?"

"I don't know."

I opened it.

Thomas heard the paper tear.

"Margaret."

"It's too late."

"What does it say?"

I unfolded a single sheet.

It was from Clara.

My hands relaxed.

She wrote that she had wanted to wait until after my birthday before contacting me.

She didn't want to disturb the peace I had finally found.

Then she asked whether I remembered something she had told me during our first conversation.

Richard had promised to return what was taken.

Clara had discovered another document.

Not a deed.

Not a financial record.

A personal letter.

She believed it had been written by Richard shortly before his death.

She wanted to give it to me.

At the bottom was an address.

No explanation.

No date.

Just a request that I come alone.

I read the letter twice.

Thomas remained silent on the phone.

"You're not going alone," he said.

"I know."

"You said she asked you to."

"Yes."

"And?"

"I don't care."

He laughed.

"Good."

The address was outside Boulder.

It belonged to a small chapel.

The kind of place people passed without noticing.

I drove there the next afternoon.

Thomas followed.

Clara was waiting on the steps.

She looked older than she had at the property.

Tired.

But peaceful.

"You came."

"I did."

She hugged me.

It surprised me.

I hadn't expected affection from someone whose family had suffered because of mine.

When she stepped back, she looked at Thomas.

"You're the lawyer."

"Yes."

"Good."

She turned toward the chapel.

"Come inside."

The building smelled faintly of old wood and candle wax.

We sat in the first row.

Clara placed a small wooden box on the bench.

"This belonged to my father."

I looked at it.

"What's inside?"

"Something he kept until he died."

She opened it.

There were three letters.

The first was from Richard.

The second was from Clara's father.

The third had no signature.

I picked up Richard's letter.

My name appeared at the top.

Maggie.

I felt the familiar ache.

I opened it.

Richard wrote that he knew he might never have the courage to tell me everything.

He said there were truths about his family he had spent most of his life trying to outrun.

He explained that when he was young, he believed he could participate in one dishonest transaction and repair it later.

He had been wrong.

One decision had led to another.

Then another.

Until he was carrying consequences that belonged partly to him and partly to the people who had taught him that power mattered more than honesty.

He wrote that he loved me.

But he didn't ask me to forgive him.

That sentence stopped me.

He said forgiveness was mine to give or withhold.

He only asked that I understand why he had kept certain secrets.

Because he was ashamed.

I read slowly.

Clara sat quietly beside me.

Thomas remained several seats away.

Richard explained that he had spent the last years of his life trying to locate every surviving member of the Ellis family.

He found some.

Others had disappeared.

He eventually found Clara.

He gave her what he could.

But there was one thing he never managed to return.

The original family records.

He believed they had been hidden somewhere within Willow Creek.

That was why he kept the house.

Not because of its market value.

Because he believed the land itself was evidence.

I lowered the letter.

"You knew this?"

Clara nodded.

"Some of it."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Richard asked me not to."

I looked at Thomas.

He didn't speak.

Clara handed me the second letter.

It was from her father.

He wrote that he didn't hate Richard.

He hated what had happened.

There was a difference.

He said Richard had been one of the few people from the other side who had eventually admitted what had been done.

He wrote that confession didn't erase the harm.

But it mattered.

I folded the letter.

Then I opened the third.

It was unsigned.

The writer said they had been present during the original property transfer.

They claimed Richard wasn't the only young man who had been manipulated.

There had been another.

A witness.

Someone who had signed documents and later disappeared.

I looked at Clara.

"Who?"

She shook her head.

"We never found him."

"Why does this matter now?"

"Because someone has been asking about him."

My stomach tightened.

"Who?"

"Samuel."

I looked toward the chapel doors.

"Is he still investigating the records?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Clara's answer was quiet.

"Because the missing witness may still be alive."

Thomas leaned forward.

"Do you have a name?"

Clara nodded.

"Jonathan Reed."

The surname struck me.

"Reed?"

"Samuel's father."

I stared at her.

"Samuel's father was the witness?"

"No."

Clara shook her head.

"Samuel's father was one of the men who arranged the transfer."

Then who was Jonathan Reed?

Clara opened another folder.

A photograph fell out.

It showed a younger man standing beside Richard.

I recognized the face.

Not from family albums.

From the old property documents.

He had signed as a witness.

"Who is he?"

"Jonathan Reed."

I looked at Thomas.

"Samuel lied."

"Apparently."

Clara nodded.

"Samuel has spent years pretending his father was the only person connected to the transaction."

"Why?"

"Because Jonathan Reed knew where the original payment records were."

Thomas took the photograph.

"Where is he now?"

Clara shook her head.

"We don't know."

I looked at the photograph again.

Richard and Jonathan stood beside one another.

Both were young.

Both were smiling.

The picture seemed innocent.

It wasn't.

"Why would Samuel want him found?"

Clara answered.

"Because Jonathan could prove Samuel's father wasn't the only one who benefited."

"Who else?"

She looked at me.

"People whose names you would recognize."

My heart sank.

"Politicians?"

"Some."

"Businessmen?"

"Yes."

"Lawyers?"

"Yes."

I stared at the photograph.

The secret had grown again.

Not because there was another hidden fortune.

Because there was another person who could connect the past to the present.

Clara reached into the box.

She removed one final object.

A key.

Different from the one Eleanor had given me.

This one was larger.

Old.

Rust around the edges.

"What does it open?"

"Your husband knew."

I looked at her.

"Richard?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't he tell me?"

"Because he never found the lock."

Thomas examined the key.

"There's a number."

I read it.

42.

Clara nodded.

"Your house has a room numbered forty-two."

I frowned.

"No."

She smiled sadly.

"Not anymore."

She explained that the original Willow Creek property had been divided into numbered sections before Richard purchased it.

Section forty-two had been absorbed into the current property.

The number remained on an old survey map.

Thomas pulled out his phone.

"Let's see if we can locate it."

The three of us spent the next hour comparing maps.

Eventually, Thomas found it.

The old section lay beneath the eastern edge of my garden.

I stared at him.

"My garden?"

"Yes."

I thought of the roses.

The stone path.

The old oak tree.

The place where Richard had built a small bench.

"You mean something is buried there?"

"Possibly."

Clara looked at me.

"Richard believed the original records were never destroyed."

"Then where are they?"

"That's what the key is for."

We returned to my house the following morning.

The garden was quiet.

I walked to the eastern edge.

Thomas compared the old survey map with the current property boundaries.

The location was beneath the oak tree.

Richard had planted it shortly after we moved in.

I touched the trunk.

He had always said the tree would outlive us.

I had laughed.

Now I wondered whether he had known exactly what he was doing when he chose that spot.

We dug carefully.

Nothing.

Another foot.

Nothing.

Then the shovel struck metal.

My heart jumped.

Thomas knelt.

He brushed away the soil.

A steel plate appeared.

At its center was a lock.

The number 42 was stamped beneath it.

I held the key.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then I inserted it.

The lock turned.

A hidden compartment opened beneath the tree.

Inside was a sealed metal tube.

And a note.

Richard's handwriting.

I had hoped you would never need to open this.

I closed my eyes.

Thomas whispered, "What does it say?"

I read the rest.

If you are reading this, then the truth has survived longer than I expected.

But there is one final thing you must decide.

I looked at Thomas.

The next line was hidden beneath a fold.

I opened it.

And my breath stopped.

Richard had written the name of the person who had helped him preserve the records.

It wasn't Eleanor.

It wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Samuel.

It was someone I had known for decades.

Someone who had been standing beside me at my birthday celebration only days earlier.

<a
