9 – I Drove to Eleanor’s House Carrying Richard’s Secret, Only to Discover the Ledger Was Missing and Someone Had Reached Her First

I left before sunrise.

Thomas insisted on driving, but I told him I needed to be behind the wheel.

He finally agreed, though he followed me in his own car.

The road toward Boulder was nearly empty.

For most of the drive, I said nothing.

Richard's photograph sat on the passenger seat beside me.

I had taken it from his study without knowing why.

Perhaps I needed to see his face while I decided what to do with the truth about him.

The revelation that he had helped move the Willow Creek property had changed something inside me.

Not my love for him.

That remained.

But the clean certainty of my memories was gone.

I had spent thirteen years remembering Richard as the careful man who protected me.

Now I knew he had once been involved in the very system he later spent decades trying to expose.

The contradiction hurt more than I expected.

When I reached Eleanor's street, I slowed down.

Her house looked exactly as it had two days earlier.

White siding.

Blue shutters.

The little garden.

But something was wrong.

The front door stood open.

I stopped my car.

Thomas pulled in behind me.

"Stay here," he said.

"No."

"Margaret."

"I'm coming."

We walked toward the house together.

The door moved slightly in the morning breeze.

"Eleanor?" I called.

No answer.

Inside, the living room was in disarray.

A chair had been knocked over.

One drawer hung open.

Photographs were scattered across the floor.

The metal box was gone.

My stomach dropped.

Thomas immediately called the police.

I walked toward the kitchen.

A cup lay broken beside the sink.

There was blood on one piece of porcelain.

Not much.

But enough.

"Eleanor!"

We searched every room.

She wasn't there.

Then I noticed something beneath the dining table.

A folded piece of paper.

My name was written across it.

I picked it up.

Don't trust the man who says he came for the truth.

That was all.

Thomas read it.

"She wrote this?"

"I don't know."

"Could be a warning."

"Could be a trap."

He looked at me.

"Exactly."

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

An officer photographed the house.

Another questioned us separately.

When I explained who Eleanor was and why we had come, the officer's expression became serious.

"Did she have enemies?"

"Apparently."

"Names?"

I hesitated.

"Samuel Reed."

The officer wrote it down.

"Anyone else?"

I thought about my children.

"Possibly."

"Which one?"

"My son."

Thomas looked at me.

I shook my head.

"I don't know if Michael was involved."

The officer nodded.

"We'll verify."

Then he asked the question I had been dreading.

"Is there anything valuable missing?"

I looked toward the empty space where the metal box had been.

"Documents."

"What kind?"

"Historical property records."

"Financial?"

"Some."

"Anything that could be worth money?"

"Possibly."

He wrote another note.

"I'll need a complete list."

I couldn't give him one.

Because I didn't know everything that had been inside.

Before we left, I walked into Eleanor's bedroom.

Her bed was untouched.

On the nightstand sat a photograph.

It showed Richard and Eleanor as young adults.

I picked it up.

Something was written on the back.

He promised he would come back.

I turned the photograph over again.

The words were old.

The ink had faded.

But the handwriting was Richard's.

I slipped the photograph into my purse.

Outside, Thomas stood beside my car.

"She knew someone was coming."

"Yes."

"And she expected trouble."

"Yes."

"Then why didn't she leave?"

I looked at the house.

"Maybe she didn't have time."

We drove back toward Denver.

Halfway home, Thomas received a call from the police.

They had found Eleanor.

Alive.

She had been taken to a small medical center outside the city.

I turned the car around.

When we reached her room, she was sitting upright with a bandage around her wrist.

Her face looked exhausted.

But she was conscious.

"Maggie."

I rushed to her bedside.

"What happened?"

"They came at night."

"Who?"

"I couldn't see the second person."

"Samuel?"

"No."

She looked at Thomas.

"Was he with you?"

"Yes."

She closed her eyes.

"Then listen carefully."

"What?"

"The ledger wasn't stolen."

I stared at her.

"What do you mean?"

"I gave it away."

"To whom?"

She looked directly at me.

"To Richard."

My heart stopped.

"Richard is dead."

"I know."

"Then what do you mean?"

She reached beneath her pillow.

Her hand closed around a small envelope.

"I found this hidden inside the ledger."

She handed it to me.

My name was written on it.

Again.

Maggie.

When the truth becomes too heavy to carry alone, give it to someone who can.

I opened it.

Inside was a key.

Small.

Brass.

Stamped with the number seventeen.

I looked at Thomas.

He recognized it too.

"Where did you get this?"

Eleanor whispered, "Your house."

My fingers tightened around the key.

"Where?"

"Your husband's study."

I felt a chill.

"The study has been searched."

"Not properly."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"Richard hid something inside the house that even I didn't know about."

"What?"

"A second ledger."

Thomas leaned forward.

"Where?"

Eleanor shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Then why give me the key?"

"Because Richard told me you would."

I stared at her.

"Would what?"

"Remember."

The word stayed with me during the drive home.

Remember.

I returned to Richard's study before doing anything else.

The room was exactly as I had left it.

I stood beside his desk.

Then I began looking at everything differently.

The bookshelf.

The lamp.

The drawers.

The chair.

The wall.

The key felt heavy in my palm.

I turned it over.

Seventeen.

Thomas searched the desk.

Nothing.

Then I noticed the brass lamp.

Richard had repaired it himself.

I lifted it.

The base moved.

There was a tiny compartment underneath.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

I opened it.

A diagram.

The floor plan of the house.

A red mark appeared beneath the stairs.

Thomas stared at it.

"Basement?"

"No."

I pointed.

"Under the staircase."

We moved the cabinet beside the stairs.

Behind it was a narrow wooden panel.

I had lived in the house for thirty years.

I had never noticed it.

The key fit a tiny lock.

I turned it.

The panel opened.

Inside was a shallow compartment.

There was no ledger.

Only a cassette tape and a note.

The note read:

Start with the first mistake.

I stared at the words.

"What was the first mistake?" Thomas asked.

I knew.

"Richard."

We found an old cassette player in the basement.

The tape crackled.

Richard's voice emerged.

I almost couldn't breathe.

He sounded young.

Much younger.

He was speaking to someone else.

His father.

The conversation was dated 1968.

Richard was asking him why he had transferred Willow Creek.

His father answered that the land would be sold to a development company.

Richard asked whether the family living there had been told.

His father said they didn't need to know.

Then Richard asked about the documents.

His father told him to stop asking questions.

The recording ended.

I sat back.

Thomas looked at me.

"That's the beginning."

"No."

I shook my head.

"There's more."

Another recording followed.

This one was Richard alone.

He confessed that he had helped prepare one document.

He said he believed the transaction could be stopped later.

It wasn't.

The family lost the land.

Richard carried the guilt for the rest of his life.

I closed my eyes.

Then he said something unexpected.

He had secretly purchased Willow Creek years later.

Not to profit.

To return it.

But the family had disappeared.

He couldn't find them.

So he kept the property.

He turned it into the place where the evidence would survive.

I began to cry.

Richard hadn't simply protected the house.

He had spent decades trying to make amends for what he had done as a young man.

The tape continued.

He named the family.

The Ellises.

I froze.

"Ellis."

Thomas looked at me.

"The family from the original property."

I remembered Eleanor mentioning them.

Then I remembered something else.

The old notebook.

The name appeared there too.

Ellis.

I searched the documents.

There was a final address.

California.

Thomas stared at it.

"Maybe that's where Eleanor came from."

"No."

I shook my head.

"This is different."

Then the telephone rang.

I answered.

A man's voice said, "You found the second recording."

I froze.

"Who is this?"

"You need to stop."

"Samuel?"

"No."

The line went dead.

Thomas looked at me.

"Who was it?"

"I don't know."

But I knew one thing.

Someone else had been listening.

And they knew exactly what I had just discovered.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Name Richard Tried to Erase From His
