month.”

“Generous of me.”

We sat on the porch.

The new lock gleamed behind us.

She looked toward the street.

“You ever think about moving?”

The question surprised me.

“Because of this?”

“Because houses can become heavy.”

I considered it.

“I might someday.”

She nodded.

“But if I do, it will be because I choose another place.”

“Good.”

“Not because somebody decided my house was office.

Priya was already there.

The building-security video from Martin's office appeared on a large monitor.

Timestamp.

7:14 p.m.

Empty hallway.

7:16.

The elevator opened.

A woman stepped out.

Not Dana.

Not Bridget.

At least, I did not think so.

She wore a dark coat, glasses and a scarf over her hair.

She walked directly to Martin's suite.

Used his key card.

Entered.

Curtis leaned toward the screen.

“Pause.”

Priya stopped the video.

“What?”

“Zoom if you can.”

The image enlarged.

Grainy.

The woman's face was partly turned away.

Curtis stared.

“I know that coat.”

My stomach tightened.

“Whose?”

“Bridget's.”

Priya resumed.

At 7:51, the woman exited.

She carried a folder.

As she approached the elevator, she removed her glasses.

For two seconds, she looked directly toward the camera.

Bridget.

Curtis sat back.

No one spoke.

The evidence was no longer circumstantial.

Bridget had entered Martin's office using his key card.

She had been there during the exact period when the forged trust was electronically filed.

But one question remained.

“How did she get Martin's card?”

Priya said they were investigating.

The answer came faster than expected.

Martin's office kept interior camera footage for thirty days only, so nothing from months earlier remained.

But the building access system showed Martin's card had been duplicated.

Not physically copied.

A second credential had been issued.

“Who authorized it?”

Mr. Hale looked at the report.

“Dana Reeves.”

Curtis swore quietly.

Priya raised a hand.

“Wait.”

The authorization request had been submitted through Dana's account.

But Dana denied making it.

IT found the request originated from an external login.

The IP address belonged to Northbridge Asset Solutions.

Gregory Vale.

I sat back.

There it was again.

Every road returned to him.

Curtis stared at the screen.

“So Greg stole access to Martin's office, Bridget used it, and they filed the trust.”

“That's a hypothesis,” Priya said.

“A very good one.”

“Yes.”

My phone vibrated.

A text message.

From Bridget.

I almost deleted it.

Then I opened it.

We need to talk before Curtis ruins everything.

I showed him.

His face tightened.

Another message arrived.

You don't understand what Greg will do if this falls apart.

Priya took a photograph of the screen.

Then a third message appeared.

I never meant for you to lose the house permanently.

Nobody moved.

Curtis whispered, “Permanently?”

I read the sentence again.

Not: I never meant for you to lose the house.

Permanently.

There was a difference.

A terrible one.

I typed one question.

What was supposed to happen to it?

Priya stopped me before I sent it.

“Don't.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because Bridget is frightened enough to
