house.

My office.

Greenville.

September fourteenth.

One clip showed my car leaving the lender meeting.

Another showed Brooke’s vehicle.

Then the camera shifted.

A male voice spoke.

“She's early.”

Another voice answered.

“We're only watching.”

The first voice was Vale.

The second?

Mercer played it twice.

I knew it.

Aaron.

He had been there.

The man who claimed he refused to help had personally participated in the route test.

Mercer enhanced the next segment.

Aaron appeared briefly in a side mirror.

No ambiguity.

“He lied.”

“Yes.”

“Again.”

“Yes.”

The recording continued.

Vale asked:

“What happens if she changes route?”

Aaron replied:

“Then Ward redesigns it.”

Vale:

“And if she doesn't?”

Aaron:

“January.”

The file ended.

I stared at the frozen image of Aaron.

His encrypted messages had contained truth.

Just enough truth to redirect blame.

Not enough to include himself.

Then my phone buzzed.

Aaron again.

I didn't need Mercer to tell me not to answer.

The message said:

YOU FOUND THE VIDEO.

A second followed.

I CAN EXPLAIN.

Then:

I WAS THERE TO MAKE SURE VALE DIDN’T TOUCH YOU.

I almost laughed.

A third message arrived.

WARD WAS ALREADY OUT OF CONTROL.

Mercer dictated the response.

Then turn yourself in.

Aaron answered:

NOT YET.

Why?

His reply came after nearly a minute.

BECAUSE WARD ISN’T THE PERSON YOU SHOULD BE MOST AFRAID OF.

I looked at Mercer.

Another message arrived.

MERTON HAS MORE TO LOSE THAN ALL OF US.

Then:

AND YOU JUST TOOK HIS MINE AWAY.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: Aaron’s Warning
